~ Buying yourself jewellery

Today I saw a silver ring that I had to get. It was in an art gallery / shop and is a 'one off' which I always appreciate... It is very simple, just stirling silver with a thin band of red glass-like enamal in a stripe all the way 'round the ring. It was a bit of an extravagance but when I put it on the pointer finger of my left hand... I didn't want to take it off. So I bought it.

I wouldn't normally buy jewellery for myself... I always think of it as something that should be given or received as a gift to be important... but somehow this ring does feel important because I bought it for myself...

So, my question is... Do you think it is strange to buy yourself jewellery?

No.

Now!
A jewel is very psecial so if you give it to yourself you do it in an act of self love. And what more inportant that loving yourself?

Enjoy your new ring!

I don't think that's strange at all, I bought most of my jewellery myself.
As a matter of fact, I'm always wearing the same ring and pendant and I bought both of these myself. They are very special to me, because I picked them myself and more or less "designed" them myself; I picked the stones for both of them (they are opals, souvenirs from Australia ;) ), I had the ring changed because I didn't like the initial design and the pendant I had specially made.

Buying jewelry is a wonderful pastime. I have learned so much about design just by looking at all the auction listings. Surprisingly, it has much in common with architecture. And there is an entire subject of metaphysical study involving the properties & purposes of different stones , crystals, & metals .

As a graduation gift, I had a wonderful time assembling a treasure chest full of vintage necklaces for my daughter . She is quasi-goth, and a lot of the older stuff fits right in.

Bonus:
As a tarot reader, you can feel free to wear whatever outlandish jewelry that you happen to fall in love with. You have already been given the Weird Pass.

Jewellery is very satisfying to pick out and then wear with pleasure. I certainly have purchased jewellery for myself and cannot see anything wrong with that!

Pollux  08 Jul 2002
I never buy jewellery for myself, simply because it is not the type of items I tend to spend my money for. Just not the first thing I think of when my pockets are heavy... *LOL*
I love giving jewellery as a present, but only if it is silver. I don't know why, but I always thought gold was... coarse, something vulgar. Maybe my relatives' doing :P. BUT I LOVE that feeling of insecurity, when I can't decide which silver wristlet/bracelet/ring/earrings/whatever get for my friends!!! (mostly girls).
And some of them complain, cos they have boxes full of that stuff and they don't use it... I wish I were that unlucky! *LOL*
I also tend to encourage silver jewellery towards me as gifts... But only my sis responded so far... :( *poor Pollux*

Personally, I prefer jewellery as a gift. But anyway...
YEAH!!!! DO BUY JEWELLERY FOR YOURSELF!!!
Especially if you have this peculiar experiences with it.
And especially if it is SILVER. :D

not for me...or i would never have gotten myself a nice amethyst/diamond ring. why wait for someone to show appreciation in a gift. one should always show love for oneself plus too...jewelry is another thing that helps you draw closer to the goddess within.

like yesterday at a craft fair! saw this bracelet that was handmade w/tiny pink glass beads and off white fresh water pearls. and a heart clasp. it said I BELONG WITH YOU! i went to the bank and bought it.

i enjoy wearing nice things like this and clothes too because it helps me feel feminie and loved by the goddess. i feel the female energy in my heart and soul when i buy something that is special so there's no reason why anyone should be stopped unless of course it's not in your budget!!!

so wear your ring with love and listen for others to call to you!

Blessed Be,
:TQC :THP :CL

I never like the jewelry that others buy for me because they don't know my tastes. I perfer to buy my own and ask others not to. I hate having to wear a piece that I don't like just because someone bought it for me.

I say revel in this piece that you love. It's a gift to yourself. :)

suzyspellbound  09 Jul 2002
I only wear silver or white gold, I just don't think yellow gold suits me! If relatives give me money for my birthday I always use this money to buy myself a special piece on holiday, because if I just put this money in the bank it would just get spent on someone else. So I take this opportunity to buy me something then when I show my relative they are happy that I have something I will love and tresure always, because of them. Its just the same as them choosing it for me!!!

Starfish  09 Jul 2002
I love purchasing jewelry for myself. And like others have already said, I don't always like the jewelry others purchase for me, I prefer to pick out my own. I love Silver over Gold and prefer colorful stones to diamonds...

Congratulations on your new piece of jewelry, Kayne!

I have to buy jewellery for myself - my boyfriend freely admits that he has no idea where to even start picking out something I'd like! So don't feel guilty spending money on yourself - if it called to you that strongly, it was meant to be yours! :)
And I'm with you, Starfish, 'cos I prefer coloured stones to diamonds too. My favourite ring has green sapphires. Sapphires and rubies are changeable stones - mine fade to a pale shade when they aren't worn or when I'm ill, but return to their dark hue when I'm healthy again.

i love buying myself jewellery!

and i loooove receiving it :D

im a bracelet person - i rarely leave the house without something round my wrist, though i do try to keep it varied.

my latest ones are a bracelet i made myself with little wood blocks with letters on that say 'gutless' when all together, and a silver bracelet i bought today that is in the pic attached!

(i tend to scan them..because im sad and have nothing better to do :D)

I love jewellery. what's really fun is to make your own 'franken-jewellery' my relatives tend to give me quite a bit of second-hand jewellery, and sometimes I'll pick up an interesting piece at Claires (a sorta cheepy-teeny style jewellery place.). I'm incredibly allegic to metals other than gold or pure silver, so I take it all apart and make totally nw things out of it. it's pretty fun. plus you kinda get a more personalized feel.

Umbrae  11 Jul 2002
Buying yourself something you want is an important part of growing up.

Say this out loud, “Yes, I can!”

Once more with feeling.

Every so often I buy a new earring (which always come in pairs), my wife sees them and I never get to wear it!

kayne  11 Jul 2002
I love that idea Red Raven - sounds great!

(I must sad with nothing better to do too Hush :P)

http://store.yahoo.com/mattandaustin-store/ring.html I'm a major Crow fan. (If you don't know who Brandon Lee is, he's the actor that sadly died in the making of the first Crow movie).

If you go to that link, it will show the magnificent ring I orderd. It's supposed to arrive about Wed. or Thurs.

When I saw this ring, I couldn't believe it. You have to email them asking if the size you want is still in stock. I'm a size 4, and I thought all the rings would be gone. :(

But then..... I got a reply saying that it wasn't! It shipped THE SAME DAY I ORDERED IT. :D Woohoo!

There are some jewellry shops here in the south which earn a little fortune from me LOL, especailly in case they offer Pagan silver stuff.

Yesterday I offered myself a silver bracelet with to eagle heads. I found it at claire's for around 6 €. I have seen it for ages there but could not make up my mind to get this one because the eagles look more like ravens but I thought this would be a nice reward for the "Magic Week" I did at "Magic Garden".

Last month I found a silver Goddess pendant with a moon made of Larimar. I could not resist and offered this to myself. When I am not hunting down some rare tarot decks I am looking for silver jewellry.

kelli  15 Jul 2002
Kayne I'm glad u included a pic of the ring.. it looks great

So many times I've looked longingly at something and then that little voice sparks up and reminds me of the power bill or car rego or some mundane excuse not to buy it - so when I actually do go ahead and "bite the bullet" it feels soooo good! Sometimes you just gotta say... "What the hell" and go for it.

GO AHEAD AND SPOIL YOURSELF!

theres nothing wrong with buying jewlery for yourself...although sometimes the item would be more special if it were given by someone around you

Starfish  15 Jul 2002
Kayne -

Thanks for showing us what the ring looks like - it's a beauty!

I would never think it's weird for you to buy your own jewellery (but this is coming from someone who is a big collector and used to have about 500 necklaces). No, but honestly, you are the best person to buy jewellery for yourself because you know what you like. :) It's also nice to have other people buy jewellery for you for sentimental reasons, however, because you know they put thought into it. :)

Kath  26 Jul 2002
Most of the jewellery I own I bought for myself. I have very particular tastes and am impossible to buy for. Even my husband won't buy it for me, because he knows how fussy I am :)

I prefer estate jewellery too. It is unique and has real character, I think it's much nicer than the mass produced mediocre quality stuff that is manufactured these days.

Cheers
Kath
