Do Antiques Bother You???

A friend of mine wants to get rid of every antique she owns. She feels that she has picked up unwanted entities after she brought the items home. Her daughter can always tell it's coming, even before her mom gets out of the car with it.

I love old stuff, but sometimes I look at a thing and decide it is just nasty. And no matter how pretty it is, I won't have it.( I don't have the gift of seeing entities.)My friend will describe things to me, and they just sound bad to me - "You DIDN'T buy it, did you??" But she bought them because they "called" to her.

Now, even if I were to buy an antique while we were shopping together, she would not want to ride in the car with it.

Other things seem to be energy-enhancing for some reason. I wonder if it actually helps to collect them. However, lately, I have noticed that I get a bit light-headed in second hand stores, and I wonder if that is because I am picking up a flood of energies from all the different old things around.

Any thoughts?

maybe because it's the smell of the embalming fluid on that BEAUTIFUL red dress. (just kidding, urban legend).

actually, i like antiques, because everyone has a special memory that comes with it, and you get to add on to its special memories.

That's a beautiful way to look at it sam!

I feel that antiques, just like homes, can hold the energies of their former possesors. I think you'd have to go on an individual basis to determine whether or not that's a good thing.

I wouldn't ever want to be rid of the loving energy that's in all of our antique kitchen things, they were passed down from my great grand mother 'Eat! Eat!' hehe, and my home too, though I believe the energy in the house is probably from the plot of land, rather than the building.

I like the idea of really paying attention to an antique to define it's energetic qualities before purchasing. I'll have to remember that, never been antiquing but have been planning on going for a bit now. :D

Good luck

Now that is interesting to me. I really dislike antique stores, they literally give me the creeps.
I have some things from my own family, a lovely writing desk and a couple of small things, plus some stuff of my late mother's. They don't bother me, in fact a couple of them I really love. I use the desk all the time. But I also think that things take on something of their owners, and personally I have enough vibrations to deal with everyday life!

I like antiques quite a bit, but just like old houses, the antiques can pick up energies. Also like the houses though, you can do a cleansing if needed!! I've never had a problem with old things, but I am kind of picky about what I get. I only get the things that call to me or feel comfortable.
Antiques are not bad in general, you might just have to be careful.

I think this is one of the reasons why some people don't like old porcelian dolls. Energy left behind in an object that looks alive in the first place, kinda creepy! lol I don't really have a problem with antiques, as faunabay said, a good cleansing would probably be a good idea.

When I was a kid, we had an old platform rocker in the basement. It used to scare the be’jaysus out of me. The arms were shaped creepy, and the upholstery that covered it looked like a graveyard.

So years later after dad died my sister are splitting the stuff, she asked, I jumped.

I now own the rocker that scared the be’jaysus out of me. I love it. It is warm and cozy and…unspeakable.

My wife asked why I called it ‘The Graveyard Rocker”, so I told her to really look at the upholstery. She replied, “Oh my gawd, who would put that on a chair?”.

Love antiques, you never know who you will meet.

i'm with umbrae, i do love antiques! but i also agree with others, that antique stores can be overwhelming. i've got a lot of old books and knick knacks, and whatever i do get usually does that "calling to me" thing or feels good. but the stores! i once went into a shop in chicago that had a ton of old masks from around the world, and the store had a strong odor of indian spices, and i about commited suicide on the spot. ok, no, but i really was freaked out/depressed/manic. it was not ok.

also - agreed on the "cleansing". when we first moved into the house we are in now (old) i got locked out twice! had to sorta break back in, and was by myself that weekend! ewwwww.
doing a cleansing ceremony that night worked like a charm!

I like to collect old books, paperbacks, hardcovers - I don't usually have a problem but last year this did happen to me. I bought a normal paperback, Anne Rice, from a second hand shop in town. I noticed that the book felt cold, and had an odour but sometimes you get that with books, so I didn't think anything about it.
I took the book to bed to have a read, fell to sleep with it by the bed, had the most terrible nightmares lol and as i woke the first thing I saw was this book.
For some reason it really freaked me out, it was all I could do to hold the book by the edge of its cover and throw it in the bin, i felt like I had touched something really diry, it was a horrible feeling. Its never happened to me before but now before I buy a book, I look throught it and hold it for a minute or two, if its ok I buy it, if it seems to be giving off vibes I put it back.

i simply do not EVER go into second hand stores. i just can't. i get so ill being around all that discarded energy :( many of my friends will talk about cruising around "value village" (a second hand chain here in canada) and finding all kinds of 'bargains'. i can't stand to even park in the parking lot. LOL

i find that antiques, when they are in someones home are fine............and sometimes i can go to a garage sale IF it's held outside where the wind is blowing and disipating the energies.

but for the most part,.........i just stay away.

in light,
jade :D

I love antiques. There are not many in my house - my family is not rich enough for that, and the house is small too. Here I am not talking of second hand stuff or garage sales.

In my city there are huge fares regarding antiques, and especially furniture. Probably the most important fares orgnised here. I had a lot of friends who worked there, and got often invitations to join myself...
I never did, even though I lent a hand. But it felt so nice being sorrounded by all that old stuff... It was a pleasant experience. I was really comfortable, and never felt uneasy or had problems because of the discarded energies and similar - that I did sense.
I don't know if I possess those special sensitivities to see/feel entities and/or be affected by energies and memories; or at least thay are not that refined and evident. Luckily. :D

As for second-hand books... NO WAY!!! I want brand-new-stinking volumes!!! :D:D:D *LOL*

No old used books? Holy cow you are missing out. I remember getting into an argument with a shopkeeper one time because I wanted to buy an old (1936) book of Ghost Stories. She said it was for display purposes only. I explained she ran a shop. She sold things. The book was on a shelf. The book was therefore for sale. She sold it to me…it’s filled with old stuff, stuff you cannot find anymore.
I love old books. I have a leather-backed book of the poems of Edgar Allen Poe.

And that old musty smell when you open them…aroma of the gods!

i know! some old books are so much better than the new books that are being sold know. take gone with the wind for instance. it a love story, but still has a plot, unlike today's trashy love novels, (not that i read any, though). i mean please i saw one love novel's title once. two fathers in question? please!

Never had that problem with antiques. Maybe it's because I'm only a little bit psychic, and then only sometimes!
I collect press-moulded glass, candlesticks mainly, and perhaps such a hard, shiny medium doesn't absorb bad vibes very well. The only thing I worry about is all the green pieces I have, as older green glass was coloured with uranium salts and is ever-so-slightly radioactive! Bet my shelves would glow in the dark!
I also collect Mucha mirrors, but they aren't really antiques as they were produced in the '70s.

Here at home, my mother has lots of stuff passed down from her family, like a beautiful embroidered chair hand-stitched by her grandmother. She used to sit in it as a little girl and pretend she was a princess. We also haver her grandffather's rocking chair, the one she remembers him sitting in with his nose right up to that new-fangled" television. Yeah, this house is full of family memories from both sides. These are the antiques I cherish.

I've always been pretty funny about antiques stores, though. I never liked the creepy smell. Unless there's an endearing story behind the piece I wouldn't consider bringing it home. But then again, haven't these pieces been cleaned by the dealer? Wouldn't that erase any energy? I don't know. I'd have to be convinced.

I don't really like antiques(but only from an aestetic stand point).

I prefer the ultra modern look, you knoe, like an all stainless steel kitchen!!

Mh... Add hay-fever to my problems: I think I'd have to spend all the time on that book sneezing.
