I absolutely love cranberries but they are hard to get in Germany (and if you get them, they are expensive as hell) so I am wondering if it is possible to grow them here on a balcony?
Has anyone tried this already out?

Wow, different climtes I guess. They grow wild around Nova Scotia, you can pick yourself sackfuls of them in the fall.
The main thing I know about cranberries is they like lots of water. Commercially here they grow them in semi-swamps.

Hi Marion,
Thanks for the help! Hm, I will check out some catalogues and see if I can get some seeds or cranberry plants to grow them.

I think cranberries require too much room to grow well on a balcony... like marshes with acidic boggy soil. But I found a webpage for you that talks a little bit about cranberries as house plants!

Catlin,
I regret to tell you that cranberries require alot of moisture and room to bear fruit. Even in North America, they don't seem to be "everywhere"...I know the state of Maine is a big cranberry region, as are a couple of the Canadian East coast provinces. Not sure about the west coast, but I assume they do grow out there.
So, regretfully, I don't think they would do very well on a balcony in a container - and even if you got it grow, I doubt it would produce fruit.
Having said that, can you get dried cranberries in Germany? We get them here. They dry like raisens and are quite tart...but oh so yummy!

It is very very dry here, I think it has rained ONCE all summer so far. I like cranberries quite a bit. Frozen cranberry juice concentrate is good. I once bought the dried cranberries and used them in homemade bread. That was really good! I wouldn't even attempt to grow them inside though.
