help from British English speakers . . .

This is going to sound like a really silly question, but a friend of mine needs some help with British English idiom.

She's writing a book in which the character in question is English (but raised in France by his English mother) and in his early 20's. She emailed me today to ask if he would say "underwear" or "panties" in reference to his gf's "unmentionables". I told her I wasn't sure he'd use either, so now I'm here asking for help. Any suggestions from all of you in the UK?

thanks,
napaisti
