Which person or persons do you admire and why?
My list:
My grandfather, because he was a wonderful person with a great sense of humour who worked hard all his life, raised a big family (even risked his life during the war smuggling food to feed his family) and was the best grandfather ever. And because he's still with me, guiding me on my spiritual path... :)
Nelson Mandela, because all those years in prison didn't make him bitter or revengeful, but he simply continued his fight against apartheid.
All the women who fought and are still fighting for women's rights all over the world. It's thanks to them that I can vote, that I have a choice about what I want to do in life.
And basically everyone who fights for their rights and that of others, especially in countries where that takes a lot of courage, because standing up for your rights may get you killed.

I admire my Granny and Papa, may their souls be at peace. They were both WONDERFUL God fearing Christians no matter what the were faced with. They raised 3 children as well as helped support 9 grandkids, worked all their lives to do what was right and teach us right from wrong. For those of you that have seen "The Andy Griffith Show", my Granny could have been Aunt Bee. :)
I also admire Anne Frank. As she was being persecuted her last words written say "In spite of everything I still believe people are good at heart." Although a child when she passed those words and innocence in her time of despair will always amaze me, may she be at peace.
Love and light,
Kismet

George Soros.
For his political activism. Actually doing something as opposed to talking.

hmmm.......who do i admire? well, let me think on this a moment.
i think that at this time, in my life, i would have to say my beautiful teenage daughter (fairyface on the forum for those of you who remember her). she is such an amazing person. she is strong and independant and a leader and compassionate and a great friend/listener, someone who i hope to never have to live without. she stands up for herself, confronts when the situation calls for it and puts up with me as her mother. :D
she is my best friend, and most cherished person in this world.
in light,
jade :D

My husband, for being a caring, thoughtful and compassionate guy. It sounds corny, but he really is someone I am proud to know, for many reasons.
His parents, who raised two great sons.
My mom, who still drives me nuts, but has faced her illness with a calm and attitude that completely astound me.
My sister, for not taking for granted her "extra time" (24 years and counting), and being a great mom.
People who have a dream, and follow it through.

The people that do the kinds of jobs that actually keep things going, but many times get taken for granted, such as...Supermarket checkers, Trash collectors, Bus drivers, and the like. I couldn't do these jobs. I'm too spazzy to check groceries. I tried it, and fainted dead away halfway through my shift. The first words I heard upon being revived were, "You're Fired." I admire people who have the patience to deal with the public, who keep smiling when faced with really crabby customers, and can actually turn the situation around to make something positive out of it. I admire the people who dropped everything and volunteered to go to New York City on Sept 11, and provided things like coffee, comfort, and sandwiches to exhausted rescue workers who had emerged from the ninth plane of hell, and had to go back in again to try to save...anyone. My heroes are the "Average Joes". Bravery and true courage are not the province of an elite. You see it in the single mom who struggles with 2 1/2 jobs to raise kids alone, puts them through school, tries to keep them off drugs, and does so with often insufficient child support and limited resources. You see it in"tough" city kids, who upon seeing a thug snatch an old lady's purse, chase him down, get it, and give it back. I admire these million points of light, the people who make me realize that in spite of all that could be said is wrong, there's a lot that's still right, and we're all in this together.

This is such a great question, and yet I haven't been able to figure out an answer that wouldn't leave somebody out... I guess I'm somewhere on the same line as DarkElectric - admiring all those, known ones as well as nameless ones, who stand up for a good thing, for what they believe in.
This question made me think about a very ugly-faced example of how standing up for yourself and what you believe in brings out the worst in the people who oppose you:
We have had a couple of instances here in Sweden in the last couple of years, when young, beautiful girls have been murdered by their own famillies for fighting for their right to live their own lives, and pick their own husbands for example... Can you imagine pleading for your life to your own father while he's pointing a gun at you for falling in love with a Swedish boy? I admire the strength and the courage these girls have to stand up for themselves, even though they know the threat they are under.
I can't relate to what brings anyone to commit such a crime, to kill one's own child for breaking tradition... To me this is doctrine showing it's ugliest face. (With all respect to the good famillies of this culture, the families where such a thing would never happen. They get a lot of crap for what others do.)
