Hey Aeclecticans...
... just imagine...
You are a famous musician playing the music that you love! What sort of band / solo act would it be; what sort of music would you play; what would your 'look' be and, most importantly; what would you call yourself / your band??? :D

tabbycat  26 Jul 2002
Folk rock - think Fairport Convention, Steeleye Span or Silly Wizard. I'd be the vocalist who wrote all these really cool songs, like Joni Mitchell or June Tabor - 'course, I'd have to get younger, thinner and prettier first! :D
As for the group name - Cats in Cupboards, which could be shortened to CiC, or something cosmic and mystical like Unicorn Song or Maelstrom of Stars.
In one of my books (not yet on the Net, but working on it!) I have a Celtic/Pagan electro-folk group called StarChild, who do a number called 'Twisting the Dragon's Tail'. Just wish I had the talent to really write the song - I can hear it in my head, but can't
get it down on paper!

hey tabbycat!
Maelstrom of Stars is such a great name:)

if i could sing i would like to be an opera diva!
not that i love opera (i do like some of it though) but i like the dramatic flare to it, the costumes and the whole setting, the plays, the death-scenes and the humor in it.

Liliana  26 Jul 2002
Id call my group White Witch, and the best description I guess for what Id play is new age/mystical rock. My opening song would be a song with lyrics that casts a circle around the stadium Id be performing in, then Id sing various other postive spiritual rock songs , near the end Id release thehuge cone of power released by the thousands of dancing fans towards goals such as world peace and understanding, Earth healing, and what not. Its be my gimmick, and of course Id let everyone know whats going on before I did it (wouldnt be a White Witch otherwise hehe)

Full of ideas, no talent

:THP

Bluegrass/Swing (old country)

Nasal Norm and the Nine Nasty Nose Pickers

Steeleye Span…used to love those guys. It was during a solo gig by the fiddler from Silly Wizard [john or phil cunningham] that I asked my wife out for our first date…Wow, hadn’t thought of those groups in years. Funny how life gets in your way…

I'd sing jazz, mixed with a jaunty rock beat. Sometimes I'd go pop-ish (think Alicia Keyes) and sometimes I'd go alternative rock (think Garbage)...but it would all have a jazz backbeat to it.....

I'd be the star! And therefore, I could go with my name - or maybe just my first name, as all good Canadian female singers seem to do (Celine, Shania, Alannis...and soon - AmyEL!)....

And the best thing about jazz???? It doesn't matter what size you are to sing it well!

I used to be able to sing reasonably well. In high school, I sometimes sang solos, but was always part of the choir (they called it "glee club"), but as an adult, I seem to to have lost it as my voice has changed. Or, that's what my husband and step-kids tell me. 'Course, they could just be jealous of my remarkable voice, too...;)

Thanks Kayne...I liked that little trip down fantasy lane.....

I'd be the lead singer in a roll and roll band. My name would be "Slash." I'd encourage irresponsible behavior such as:

.....women throwing their undergarments to me on stage;
.....children telling their parents they don't like broccoli;
.....women throwing their undergarments to me on stage;
.....telling children they only need to floss their teeth once a day;
.....women throwing their undergarments to me on stage;

After cashing a few hundred million dollars in royalty checks, I'd move to a tropical island, where the native women don't wear a lot clothing, and the men share everything.

I'd open a satellite distillery for Corona Beer, and have it staffed entirely by the Swedish National Bikini Team.

I'd hire a celebrity lookalike to handle all of the unpleasant things in my life, and the Miss America award winner would be my personal valet each year.

Oh, and I'd have a cable modem.

Red raven  26 Jul 2002
mod Rock. think Treble Charger. I'd be the drummer, because they get to be famous but nobody pays all that much attention to them.

I would name my band Electric Jesus (lol, joking! but you have to admit, it sounds funny.) it's probably end up as something that makes no sense. (Like guardians of the concrete donkey.)

Jade, didn't Liliana tell you? It's a deal: We two will take care of her BVs*!!! :D
If Liliana is the White Witch, I'll be the Hedgewarlock. Anyway, in any respectable BVs team there are at least 2 ladies and a gentleman. There still is a place left (maybe I should tell Rhiannon... LOL :D)

So, after the spending spree and the Karaoke Session... ;)

(This all to say I think I would do something similar to Liliana too... :P)

*BVs = Backing Vocals ;)

Diana  26 Jul 2002
Hip-hop. Definitely hip-hop.

Group's name? "Gare à toi". Which means kind of "watch out!" in French.

wavebreaker  26 Jul 2002
I would either want to be the crazy fiddle player in a folk rock band (something like the Levellers) or the lead guitar player in a funky rock band (think RHCP).
Not that I've ever touched a violin or a guitar... :D

WolfSpirit  27 Jul 2002
I would play the electric and acoustic guitar like magic in a band playing a mixture of rock and blues. And when we're not touring it's even better: I go to a pub to have a jam session with artists from every musical genre I like and play until the small hours then have a few drinks and go home with my favourite groupie and think *sigh* another perfect day...

the hermit  27 Jul 2002
Classical guitarist, solo act, heir to the Maestro, Andres Segovia.
Lot's of Bach, Sor, Villa-Lobos, Rodrigo, Granados, Albeniz...
Lot's of Spanish and Gypsy influence.

And I'd play with the Gipsy Kings regularly as guest star...

And with my good friend 'Slash' when he's in town, doing an 'unplugged' album live...
.....with women throwing their undergarments to us on stage :D

kayne  27 Jul 2002
I would be an electro-techno chill-out lounge DJ who constructs and reconstructs music to groove and move to. Famous female vocalists such as Madonna and Kylie as well as the Jazz greats would be falling over each other to be a guest on my album. Every modern cafe in Europe would have my album playing at some time. My hair would be red or green depending on how I felt that morning...

DJ Funky Kaktus is in the house! :cool: :D

Funny, I would have thought they would be blue.
:)

Violet Gargoyle  27 Jul 2002
My tastes always fell all over the place, but I think I would end up falling somewhere between Beck, Faith No More or Nine Inch Nails.

I always wanted a band called "One Violet October".

But then I would have to have a side project for all the ethnic music that I love, like the Cheiftains. But then make sure that it was all rythmic, like A R Rahman. I think that band would be called "The Heel-Toe Express"

By the way, Tabbycat- my husband adores all of the bands that you list, we are also big folk lovers.....

divinerguy  27 Jul 2002
Hey, I got a couple of names for you -

... Grauitous Violet

... Random Acts of Violet

zorya  27 Jul 2002
at one time i wanted to be stevie nicks, haha, prior to that i wanted to be grace slick. (yes, i hear you fellow old folks chuckling)

but now, i'd want to sing the blues. maybe occasionally pick up the guitar too. maybe a torch singer, hahahaha

i'd want to sing in small, cozy venues most of the time. now and then i might want a huge audience full of screaming fans...just for my ego. hee hee.

Don't forget that international jazz singing sensation, AmyEL, who would perform gratius due to her long, spiritual relationship with the famous DJ Funky Kaktus...LOL

Don't forget Pat Benatar! Oh, you might know this singer, Lee Aarron (I forget the name of the mostly forgetable Canadian '80's rock band she used to front), who does just this now, only her new venue is jazz.

In about a fortnight's time, my boyfriend and I are going to Cropredy - that's Fairport Convention's annual festival. Should be a good one this year, as they're celebrating 35 years of the band and have guests like the Dubliners, the Oysterband, Richard Thompson and Eddi Reader. So I'm hoping for good weather, not too hot and no rain... :D
And I really like your band name - One Violet October.

Faerie Lin  28 Jul 2002
Since I sing I would want to be a lead singer of a group with the style of like... Cibo Matto. When/If my family and I eventually move to Seattle or back to Austin, I really want to put forth more energy in starting a band. I would also want to do for a song or two a funky trombone solo to add a little twist to a song. So i guess I wouldn't mind being apart of a SKA band either, if I could sing AND play my trombone for a little bit. :D
