Holmes, I belong to the Northlight Bookclub. They mail books readily to Canada. As a dabbler in art, I would strongly recommend their offerings. Pursue the joy of creativity!
Namaste,
Debins.

Holmes, if you are serious about getting into painting, my best advice is to take classes; as many as you can afford to, especially if you want to get into watercolors. This is my primary medium, and it is very difficult to work with.

If you have any questions about watercolors, brushes, paints, etc. Please feel free to PM me!

Good luck!

i shall take your advicxe to heart two things alas

1 on reserve far from any art lessons

2 I CHEAT use water colout crayons and pencil crayons to do half the work and water to them

yet i have no doubt that as i get deeper into the techiques i will get deeperinto themedium and undertand it better

...you are being innovative and creative. And you are right about practising and getting into things; you'll get a feel for the watercolours and then you'll have specific things to ask Pollux! Enjoy!
P.S. Might the local school have evening art classes? I know that new art graduates often teach for school boards.
Namaste,
Debins.

How fun!
Whatever medium you choose, an exercise that I like is to do the color scales first. Then, for fun, I take the best colorful tarot painting that I know and analyze the colors, using my new set of whatever. You can do this with crayons, brush markers, watercolors, pastels, even snipping segments of collage material (magazine illustrations) to do a light-to-dark palette. It's similar to putting your box of crayons in order or getting acquainted with your tarot. Using paints and studying a tarot picture really is fun for me.
Because tarot is about people archetypes, I studied figure drawing and portraiture these past few years.
For me, watercolor pens--Tombow---allow me both control, delicacy and blurring capability when doing figure drawings. A few pen colors that replicate portrait sets of skin colors, a set of inexpensive brushes and decent paper. Then you can do your art sketchbook in a cafe or the desert...and later to replicate or touch up, use regular watercolors.
I realize most purists frown on mixed media--but use what works for you. And if you're into landscapes, you've got great settings or moodscapes for your own tarot painting portfolio.
Sorry if this went on and on---what a great thread!

Holmes, as one with an art history degree, let me tell ya' there is no cheating in art! Some of the world's best artists have used very "humble" media. Use what you have - your creativity doesn't know the difference!
