oh i absolutely hated that movie. :( i never read the books and i didn't know that there were such 'evil' parts in it. i thought the movie was going to be like harry potter and boy was i shocked!
i am too sensitive to watch movies like that and it upset me so much i couldn't sleep well for days :(
i hope you all enjoy it, i know my hubby wants to buy it also. he LOVED the movie.

At least you can watch it more comfortably now! ;)
When I saw it in the cinema, they didn't have a break. Normally, I hate breaks and prefer to see the whole film in one setting, but with this one I was dying for a break after about 2 hours! ;)
I liked the film. It's not among my "best films ever", but I think they did a good job. I prefer the books though.

Hi guys,
Am so glad that someone has decided to do a thread on this subject!! Am a massive fan of this movie, books and everything else that goes with it! I wish I lived in New Zealand so I could visit the set they used. My Mum is off on a tour there next year and I'm sooooo jealous!!
Anyway, glad to know there are other fans!

I'm waiting for the November Limited Edition version, as I didn't want to pay out twice and I do want the longer version of the film. Not so sure about the bookends though ;).

Already have the 1st edition, and I watched the special features on it about the extended dvd out in nov.........awesome!!! It's got bits like Galadriel giving the fellowship their cloaks and leaf clasps, plus other stuff that is pertinent to the film and later scenes in the film. Particularly the rope that Sam gets from Galadriel which is VERY important as it's magical...oooooohhhhh.
Cannot wait til nov xxx
P.S I'll have the bookends if you don't want them!!!! :D :D :D
Then I'll have 4!! Lol *grins cheekily*

I think the movie is best enjoyed after reading the books. I think the books are more fun, you read one chapter, that's an adventure, later you read another story, that's another adventure... in the movie you get the whole thick book at once ! But with the dvd, you don't have to watch it all at once which for me is a great pro, I can't sit still that long. Most people who read the book also liked the movie, which is exceptional for movies made after books. Most things in the movie are as I imagined them reading the book, only the elf king does not look that elfish to me.
I think the story is so much better than Harry Potter, HP is good against evil and that's it. In LOTR even the good people are tempted to go for power, they have to struggle with themselves to do the right thing. In the special features someone says: the movie is about power, power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely. And it's also lots of beautiful pictures... those mountains... I did not know there was going to be an extended version as well, I'll probably get that too, it'll be worth it. I'll know the movie by heart by then so I'll want some extras :D

I'm sooo glad that Lord of the Rings wasn't anything like HP! It was an excellent translation of the first book and I found little to fault it on. It's heroic fantasy in the Norse tradition, so it's bound to be full of glorious battles, treachery and oath-breaking, and poor souls doomed for making the wrong choices. I just hope that they're brave enough to keep the title of the second film - the Two Towers.
As for Harry Potter, I must be the only person in the world not to like the books! I was bought the first two and I tried to read them, but by Chapter Two I was hit by the Eight Little Words (I don't care what happens to this character!) and so I gave up. For all its hype, I don't think that HP will have the staying power of classics like LotR, LeGuin's Earthsea and the Alan Garner books - in ten years time it'll be as dated and forgotten as He-Man and the Masters of the Universe.
That said, I have a sneaky desire to read the fifth (fake) HP book that's just come out in China - Harry Potter and Leopard-walks-up-to-Dragon - Harry might be more interesting as a small hairy dwarf! :D

Go Jilly!
I Too cannot STAND the HP books, liked the film for what it was (kids movie) tried to read HP and got no further than first 2 chapters! Lol :D
Loved LOTR and have to say that anyone who is thinking about getting extended version is spot on, cos it's got the bits that Peter Jackson wanted to keep in the film but got sent to the cutting room floor.
As someone else pointed out, to do a film of that magnitude is awe-inspiring. Hat off to PJ and all the cast because it is without a doubt the BEST film I've ever seen and the best depiction of a book.
P.S as a charter member of the fan club :D I also get my name scrolled in the list at the end of the credits of the film along with 10,000 other charter members! Sad but cooooooooool ;)

I loved the movie. I think my only complaint is that when I saw the movie, my husband and I were surrounded by people who were viewing the movie for their literature class. So the whole time I heard this:
"They cut that part out"
"Where's Tom?"
"That was edited"
"They skipped a scene here"
"They cut that part out"
"Where's Tom?"
"That was edited"
"They skipped a scene here"
Now that I have it in my house, I can listen to my husband do the same thing.

Tom Bombadil, Goldberry, Barrow Wights. What a loss. But I guess they had to cut something.

I'm just now reading this thread, and I have to join in with the people who DID NOT like the Harry Potter books! I tried (I soooo tried) getting into those books, and I as well couldn't get past the first few chapters! My mom and oldest sister LOVE those books. Not I.
Anyhow, my hubby and I are gonna buy the LOTR DVD pretty soon. I just know we're gonna love it! :D

Lol Vi!
My DH did EXACTLY the same thing when we went to see it at the cinema!!! He did nothing but tear the film to bits in relation to the book! Esp the bit where Arwen takes Frodo across the water and she brings the water rushing in with the horses! Hubby not impressed at all cos it was Gandalf and Elrond that did the water 'magic' bit, also Arwen didn't carry Frodo, he was chased by the Nazgul on his own!
*sighs dramatically*
Never mind, I still loved it and can forgive PJ anything for bringing us such a delight x
Blessings

Dear Kyrie Blue - I've had 2 or 3 signatures over the past few days. If you're referring to:
Lavese sus manos: its on the back of every restaurant toilet door in California. It seems to be wise advice.
Driver carries no cash: Its a robbery prevention slogan. However, I have a son in college, and I'm the frequent target of requests for money - its seems appropriate.

PS I never fancied the Harry Potter books - after Rincewind and the Unseen University he can't compete

Lord of the Rings is one of the best movies ever made says someone who comes from middle earth. I am looking forward to the second movie coming out at the end of year. Peter Jackson is absolutely brilliant.

Years ago I tried to read the book the Hobbit and the 3 trillagies, but just couldn't get into it.
Last night, my husband rented the movie, and although I wanted to watch it, I spent most of the time running around the house during the scarry parts.
At the end of the movie I walked in the room, and sensed their disapointment... "it just ended, like half way through the story"
What I would like to ask, is....
...Do you think there is any truth to the movie????
|
| WolfSpirit |

|
What do you mean with "any truth to the movie" ?
I read the books first and I was really glad they stuck to the book's ending and did not invent some hollywood ending to make it more popular. The books are a set, it's one story really that was too much to fit in one book (or one movie).
I can't judge what the movie looks like to people who have not read the books; I know i'm very glad I did read them, I too had a bit of a problem at first to get into the story, but once i did i just kept reading !
I also loved the movie, it's a lot like i imagined from reading the books although they still had to skip a lot.

Murphy, The movie actually finished a third the way through - they are making three movies, one for each of the three books that make up the Lord of the Rings.
As Wolfspirit says, the story is to long to fit in one book or one movie - rather than condense it over much they decided that to do it justice it needed three movies.
You will have to wait a few months for the next one, and then another year for the third and final one.

Well, I'm gald so many peopel liked the movie, I loved the books and like someone else said, the books were really hard to get into, but once I'd started I couldn'd stop. The next film is released in Dec 2002, then 2003 for the 'Return of the King'. I do know a few people that found it boring which amazes me, but I guess not everyone likes the same thing eh? Life would be boring if they did.
I have to say though, I still haven't read the Hobbit, thats' one book I cannot read, no matter how much I try!!! And i do read ALOT...
