Escape to another country ...

which place would you choose to live if you had to move out of your own country - and why ?
Strange question ? It's just that I've been so fed up lately with the way our society is all about money, power, showmanship, and stomping on those around you to get higher up yourself. There must still be a place out there that's not like that. Probably just kidding myself.

catlin  21 Aug 2002
I'd love to live in a small cabin somewhere in the Haute-Provence, maybe with a view of Mt. Ventoux in South France far away from ringing phones, faxmachines, noise, etc (but pl with a computer to keep in touch with all of you).

I just love the South of France with its nice markets, the smell of lavender and this special light you cannot discribe.

Phoenix  21 Aug 2002
I would move to either France, or Italy

*Phoenix enters a reverie about his time in Italy*

Poetlove  21 Aug 2002
I think that instead of picking a place, I would want to live on an island like the Swiss Family Robinson. Of course, I would like some modern stuff there, a computer, boat, a bathroom, but I would also like books, and my family there as well.

Living off the land, with some exceptions. I think I would be happy some place that I can get up, and go as I want. Take a swim in the clear blue waters of the island, not have to worry about everyday problems of reality. Of course then I would wake up, and remember that I have no idea how to hunt. So eating fish 24 / 7 might get a little old :)

Sullanciri2002  21 Aug 2002
... I'm not the only one who dreams of getting away from the hustle and bustle of our modern society.
For myself - I'd pick the southern part of Ireland, for the way of life and the simple beauty of the landscape

divinerguy  21 Aug 2002
For me, its gotta have certain characteristics ...

Natural beauty
An eclectic and free thinking society (probably a college town)
Reasonable technological status
Good bookstores
A body of English language speakers

Candidates are

Christchurch and Wellington, New Zealand
Brisbane, Melbourne and Perth, Australia
Pacific Northwest, UNited States and Canada
Edinburgh and surrounding cities, Scotland
Reykjavik, Iceland

Bings  21 Aug 2002
I would love to live in Spain again. Having lived there before in this lifetime I'm familiar with it. But to get away from the hustle and bustle of this life I would choose to go *back* to Ireland.

Sullanciri2002  21 Aug 2002
... to Cambridge, Divinerguy, you'll love it.

the hermit  21 Aug 2002
I've always thought about Canada...
any nice caves up there?

Or Sweden... I hear the Höga Kusten is beautiful... I love the sea

You might consider Boulder, Colorado. It is all those things and more. Gotta have lots of $ though. I don't live too far from there at all....................

Umbrae  21 Aug 2002
I understand that I am different.

I cannot run.

I have to stay where I am, and change the world-one person at a time.

Push the darkness back, just a little at a time.

If you look at the dark, instead of the light...the job looks impossible.

...just a little at a time.

Hey...bring your flame over here and help...

Violet Gargoyle  21 Aug 2002
Man, I was going to say Scotland, except now underneath that last post it seems so.....well.....less thought provoking.....

Diana  21 Aug 2002
I dream of the African bush. There are no words to describe it. One has to hear it, to feel it, to touch it. It is there that I know I feel happiest. It's like finding my source and there is peace there.

VG, don't be intimidated by the cerebral musings of Umbrae... someone has to save the world for the rest of us while we dream of a different, perhaps better place for us to camp.

I’ve got a 4 cell flashlight Umbrae...
it ain’t a flame, but it will light at least a corner of the dark for a while...
and I’ve got your back.
(hope ya brought some gypsy kings to help chase away the shadows)

Yep, there are some very caves near here....in fact, I think the local racoons have dug some under my deck!

But seriously, there are some right around where I live, and the Rockies, too!

Now, where would I move to? Well, I almost moved to Australia - and then I met my husaband.

I like France & Scotland, too.

And Fiji - wow!

I guess my final descion would depend on where I was at the time....mentally, I mean....

Liliana  21 Aug 2002
Toronto Canada, I adore Toronto Canada

Its been far too long since I visited. we were to go last winter but were snowed out waaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhh

:THP

wavebreaker  21 Aug 2002
If I'd want to escape modern society, I'd like to go back to that Bedouin camp in the Sinai desert, right near the sea, sleeping on the sand, under the million stars, with the sound of the waves in the background. Or to that mountain village in Yemen, were complete strangers invited me in for tea, and offered me dinner and a place to stay for the night, even though they couldn't afford it. Or out at sea or on some tropical island, from where I could dive into the beautiful and relaxing underwater world every day...

jade  21 Aug 2002
i wanna live where there are iceburgs.

i love them, i dream of being on one.

i love looking at them and watching with patience as they drift and change.

mmmm,
jade

Thanks...a better place to camp. I remember being invited to a families house somewhere between Kom Ombu and Edfu, chasing chickens away from our food...The high country of Oregon and Utah, the plains of Kansas...the last call for prayer racing accross Jerusalem like wildfire...magic...
I simply want to keep folks safe. It is simply me.
Hey, what's that...Could you hold that light up a little more to the right? Anybody who knows Buckaroo Bonzai is a friend of mine...Someone has to watch out for Dr. Lizardo ("Laugh-a while you can, monkey-boy").

Kismet  21 Aug 2002
There are so many beautiful places on our planet. We are truely blessed.
I'd have a difficult time deciding, as I've never been to Montana, but have seen film of it, and it looks gorgeous. I lived in Germany 2 years and would like to see it again.
I'd also like to live in Middletown NY. There's a town not far from it called Newburg that is just lovely. Middletown doesn't strike me for it's natural beauty, but the beauty of memories it holds for me.
God Bless, In love and Light,
Kismet

DarkElectric  21 Aug 2002
I'd love to live in the Scottish Highlands. Ireland is beautiful too. I visited Prague, and I could definitely live there.

starr  21 Aug 2002
New Zealand is a wonderful place, the island of Andros in Greece, Florence, Italy, Amsterdam, Ireland just to name a few, places I've been the high desert also calls.

Laurel  22 Aug 2002
I would go to New Zealand or Austraila, or possibly a Carribean isle. Somewhere I could swim in the ocean every day, not too many people, English speakers because I'm hopeless otherwise, and of course, there would still be the Internet :P

(you did hide the overthruster in a safe place... didn't you?)

VGimlet  22 Aug 2002
BC Canada for me, on a nice island in the ocean. (I have actually looked at a few for sale online while I was researching.) Or the Highlands of Scotland, although I have heard the people don't like strangers. Which wouldn't be too bad for me, anti-social person that I am.
Or one of the Polynesian countries. :D

Hey tarotlady! I'll come and live there with you. We could share a hut and do readings for the villagers!

Kiama  22 Aug 2002
I would prefer to stay in my own country, and move to Glastonbury, but if I HAVE to leave my country...

I'm going to Endor! That planet where teh Ewoks live in those really cool tree-villages. Tha's where I wanna live.

Sounds like fun. I enjoy intellectual discussions for their own sake.

It may sound shallow of me, but closed minded people bother me. I'd like to banish them all to Bakersfield, along with bad drivers and Oakland Raider fans.

YESSSSSSSS!
GO DG!

midnightmerry  22 Aug 2002
If I could, I'd go to either British Columbia, Scotland/Shetland Islands, Sweden, or the Netherlands. I've also dreamed of visiting India too, but I don't know if I'd want to live there. Now, I just need a good Dr. to prescribe LOTS of valium so that I can get on an airplane to go see these places.

take a slow boat...
lots more fun, time to socialize and meet interesting folks, generally without the need for excessive medications, which leaves more time for acceptable meds such as wine and whiskey, plus good food, dancing, etc.
remember... if you’re gonna dream, dream big!

i live in bc and i must say that the island life here is slow, relaxed and very 'back to nature' the perfect place to chill!

BC... chill...
interesting choice of words with winter on the way
:D

jade  23 Aug 2002
and with the humidity levels we have (rain rain and then for a change more rain) it's chillin to the bone!

I came to the conclusion a long time ago that I am strictly a land animal. Airplanes petrify me, though I've flown a few times across the country. I keep waiting for some ingenius scientist to find a way to build a trans-atlantic train! I can imagine how cool it would be: rocking along over the waves, watching whales and dolphins frolicking in the distance... of course, the first ocean storm wave would probably derail the train- ack!

But back to the real world... a slow boat does sound so nice and so civilized! Appeals to my penchant for slower, more elegant ways.

have done both liner and freighter slow boats (also worked 105 ft. fishing boat up and down pacific coast--alaska to baja--for 1 1/2 year)
both methods (when done on properly researched vessels) made for wonderful adventures and very civilized travel.
main problem with liners now is how expensive.
need to win lottery...
over 115 million in golden state now...
what a cruise I could have then :)
around the world in a year or three!

marmalade  25 Aug 2002
oooooh... a travelling question!

well, having already moved country once (Toronto to London) I've now started wondering where my feet will land next.... I've been toying with NYC (London's just not TALL enough), but I would definitely love to move to Iceland... It's got the best bits or North America mixing with the best bits of Europe, all set in a lunar landscape. I'll just get me a house not too far from the Blue Lagoon and I'm set!!

Strega  26 Aug 2002
Italy or Ireland. :)

WolfSpirit  26 Aug 2002
If for the landscape I'd go to new zealand. I've been there and seeing lord of the rings reminds me how magical it looks in places.
For the people/culture I'd choose Ireland or Scotland (and the landscape is pretty cool there too), but I have Scottish friends and THEY think the Netherlands is nice (but that's just because they know me of course hehe)

Melvis  26 Aug 2002
Just ONE place???

Hmmm...

Well, if I could join midnightmerry on that transatlantic train and avoid all forms of air travel, I'd go to France or Ireland. Otherwise, it'd be...

"Ooohhhh Caaa-na-daaa...."

Peace,

Melvis
:TSTRE

P.S. I can't believe Buckaroo Banzai is being quoted here. It's like the mother-ship is calling me home...

mara  27 Aug 2002
"the grass is always greener on the other side" !!!!! THIS IS A FACT.

Of course I speak out of my own experience, having been 'trapped' between two continents for the last two decades and having traveled to many different countries, including the US, Brittan, thailand, austria, germany, belguim, and yes, I've been to Bali too.......:D

My final conclusion (for me that is) is that at the moment I am where I need to be at this very moment in time. Mind you, I have a habbit of getting the jitters and just up and go somewhere.....but if I had to choose a cerain place on this earth, I need to visit all continents and countries before I could decide on that one. At the moment I'm pretty comfortable in the place that I am and for my next holiday I plan to visit first of all Zwitserland and then on to the south of France (to visit a little village called ' Rennes Le Chattau') and from there on I'll drive back up to the Netherlands and see from there ;)

I just love to travel and I suppose being in Europe is good for that coz you have so many different cultures and they're all so close together.

You wouldn't be specifically interested in Grail-links to Rennes-le-chateau, would you ?
Know what I'm talking about ? The theory that Jesus didn't die on the cross but got whisked away by some of his followers, was by then already married to Mary Magdalena, and started his own dynasty ... whose descendants are still said to be part of the SCottish Royal House of Stuart ?
Maybe this should be the start of a new thread ?

Ladyhawke  27 Aug 2002
I need to win the lottery, so I can have two residences. I want a summer home in Canada (probably Vancouver), but I hate being cold, so I couldn't live there all year. So for winter, I'd be off to someplace warm and tropical (Maui or the Carribbean).

Actually, I could be *really* happy with a tiny bungalow on Captiva Island, Florida, or left alone at the Girl Scout camp (in the Kansas Flint Hills) I attended for *way* too many summers.
