One for all the Mums and Dads.
I make up this dough by dividing the ingredients into 4 and making 4 different colours. It lasts loads longer than the stuff you buy in the shops so long as it`s kept in air-tight containers.
2 cups plain flour
1 cup salt
2 cups water
2 tea spoons cream of tartar
2 table spoons cooking oil
food colouring
Mix all of the ingredients together in a pan and slowly bring to the boil, stirring continuously until the dough starts to come away from the sides of the pan.
When it`s cool it`s ready to use.
Happy playing

I've used this same recipe (thanks for posting it, Crystalmynx). But in the fall, I add a bit of food coloring to make it orange and some pumpkin spice (several different spices in a can - found in the baking aisles at your local grocery store) and let the kids make pumpkins. We add a small twig at the top and make pipe cleaner springs (wrap a green or brown pipe cleaner around a pencil) and it's part of out harvest/autumn decor. The added bonus is that it smells good!
Ahhh.... autumn.... my favorite season.

Hi ya chrystalmynx, thanks for that home made play dough :). My four year old just loves to play with playdough and after awhile it just dries out and I have to buy new ones.
Now I only have one question.....what exactly is cream of tartar, I live in the Netherlands and Tartar over here is diet mince, and I am sure that that is not what you mean.
Could you explain it a bit more as to what it exactly is :) thanks...

I remember my mom making play dough....but I don't recall her boiling it! Still, it was magical, all that gooey stuff that somehow became "something". I'm pretty sure my mom still has at least one playdough something or other from each of us...she's a softie that way!

here's a very simple ummm substance that i make for my kids sometimes. have them play with it outside.
mix about 1/2 cup cornstarch with about
1/4 cup water.
this stuff is fun! at times it's solid, then will melt and ooze between your fingers. it feels alternately dry then wet, hard, powdery, rubbery....
