What about decks on web pages?

Hi all!

While back I was delirious about having registered a really cool domain (well it's cool in Swedish at least...;)), and was about to start learning HTML. Well, to make a loooong story short, it's going VERY slowly, but I think it's going in the right direction at least...!

Tonight I read somebody's post here at Aeclectic, suggesting that Kiama should launch a web site so we can see all her decks (brilliant idea, by the way ;)), which reminded me... I wrote to both Robin Wood and Lauren O'Leary (so far) about putting some of their cards on my website as illustrations to my Tarot-section. Neither of them has replied at all, and this was almost a month ago... :(

I understand they are very busy people, but it's very discouraging, because it means I can't plan my work as I would have wanted to...

So guys, this is not another Copyright-thread, I agree on all the creator's rights issues, but my question is this: If I was to put the pictures up ANYWAY, with proper references and links to artist's web pages and everything, and send them (the artists) a link to the actual page saying "sorry, I did this anyway, hope you think it's OK, otherwise let me know" - do you think they would mind terribly?

On Robin Wood's page she writes that many people have graphics on their web pages that they don't even know whose it is, and I can completely understand any artist who wants to keep track of their work. My very AIM is to spread their work and let everyone know who made these wonderful decks that have brought me so much beauty and joy. Would you still consider this a terrible thing to do?

I'm planning on working with the site this weekend, so I'm soooo grateful to any response before I start making plans... :D

Light and love!
Jenny :)

You can do it, but you'll run the risk of being sued for copyright infringement. The attorney part of me says to wait.

If they mind, they or their lawyers will be sure to write you a polite letter and ask you to take it down.

Generally, I take no answer from an artist as a "no", unless their web site has statements regarding permitted use. I'd double check and look through the web sites of the artists involved and see if they have anything specific to say.

Hmpff.

I kinda guessed you'd say that. Ah well, patience is a virtue they say, I guess I'll just have to wait.

Or send out some e-mails to other artists, and if they answer sooner their decks get to be on my site and get the free advertising. Sweden is a rising market for Tarot-stuff, I'm sure they won't mind having their art spread out to a huge lot of awakening Tarot-holics... ;)

Thanks guys!

I wouldn't hold my breath too long on Robin.
She's a sweet person but is pretty persnickety about where she allows her art to be displayed.
Hope I'm wrong and wish you luck.

Really? It says on her web page that she practically never says no - that was actually the main reason I asked this question in the first place... Since she almost always says yes, and my page will be very "pro" her, her art and tarot in general, I figured what would there be to argue against it...

Hm. I think I'm going to write her another e-mail. I can't really see why she would "punish" the people who DO ask her permission, for what the people who DON'T ask do... Bad PR. And I mean it's nog like her pics aren't ALL over the web, I can't imagine all the people who use them have actually asked to do so...

Anyway - I still have hope!

soometimes the greasy wheel gets the attention.

so just keep sending very polite emails to her. i'm sure she'll respond. in the meantime, get your page up and ready so when she says yes, you can post and click.......voila.....it's there!

I understand what website says and hope that perhaps things have changed...
Just personal experience from 2 different, now defunct, websites I helped friends develop a couple of years ago...
Similar circumstances...
Many attempts to contact...
Months of wait
First never did receive any communications... and simply moved on with other ideas.
Second received refusal after 8 months and many previous communication attempts, simply saying something to the effect: not deemed an acceptable use, with no other explanation.
Neither was anything special, both occult related... info, reviews, readings, charts, exchange of ideas etc. One thought from others was "fees" were being charged for some services on the second site, but that doesn't explain first site.
Several who supposedly know her were ones who mentioned "persnickety-ness"
Other possibility is, of course, that she is perhaps bombarded with communication and just flat busy.

so still wish you luck with endeavor.

Speaking of the de... eh... XV! ;) Got this wonderful respons from Lauren O'Leary this afternoon:

"SO LONG AS WE ARE CREDITED, it'll be an honor to be a part of your soul's journey... sincerely, lauren o'leary"

:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*!!!!!

So whatever happens I will get to have the World Spirit pictures on my website! Hoorrayy!!

(It's so fascinating, it HAS been ages since I wrote those e-mails, and no reaction. Then I write here to ask you guys and whoops! here comes the first reply!)

Light and love,
Jenny :)

Hmm... Quite possible - and likely. I mean what else would they read - right?! ;):D

Yikes, you're making me nervous! But thanks for your support, it truely warms my heart! I think the first edition will not be very "beautiful" at all, because my focus right now is on the texts, the structure and the d**ned HTML... Taking the graphic dimension into account as well at this point would make this a Sisyfos-mission that I could not possibly finish. So the plan is to do this as a Phase 1, and then get back to the graphic appearance later. It won't look horrible, I've got at least some graphic eye, but it will be very simple...

To be quite honest I can't wait either! I guess it's the Queen of Wands in me who wants to get this baby out on the Stage of Life...! ;)
