Come on, you know you read them. Either now or when you were a kid.

I was a big fan of Gaiman's Sandman. I still like to read Lisners "Dawn" series and Mack's "Kabuki"

What comic books will you admit to having?

HudsonGray  07 Sep 2002
STINTZ! And Desert Peach and Sheba, Katmandu, Age of Reptiles, Blue Moon, some Furlough, all the original Elfquest...........

You can tell I like the independents.

Violet Gargoyle  07 Sep 2002
Nothing worng with the independants....plus we collect some elfquest in this household, too!

Liliana  07 Sep 2002
I never liked comic books of that sort sorry, but i had books by different comic strip people, and admit I love Life in Hell

Unless youd like to consider MAD and Cracked magazine comics, I always bought them when younger.

:THP

X-MEN!!!

Pollux  07 Sep 2002
Mangas, that have a far different structure and "concept" to US-type Comics.
They are not like X-Men, for example (I LOVE X-MEN! Phoenix, what is your fav character?), that is supposed to be almost never-ending, the Manga books are originally published in brief instalments of twenty pages in magazines, and only after organised in books. Many of them have lasted for YEARS on magazine, like "Lums/Lamu/Urusey Yatsura" or "Ranma 1/2" by Rumiko Takahashi for example (that's almost history LOL), but when collected and published in books they last from 9/10 to 50 books generally.
However, I have read many, more than I have at home (since swapping or lending used to be really fashionable LOL). "Ranma 1/2", "Maison Ikkoku", "Urusei Yatsura", "Video Girl Ai", "Touch", All that was pubnlished in Italy by CLAMP that is "X 1999", "CLOVER" (in progress, ARGH!!!), "Card Captor Sakura", "Magic Knight Rayearth" 1 & 2, "Tokyo Babilon", mh... "Please Save my Earth", "OZN", "PATLABOR" (MY FAV!!! And the movies ROCK! :D), hem... Well, you can't expect I remember them all!!! :P :P :P

I dabbled in US too, and still do if have nothing I prefer handy, and I am offered some. I prefer X-MEN, and sometimes "Spider Man" (I used to steal my uncles's LOL)...

There's a great Manga out here. It rocks. Full of mythological and esotherycal stuff, angels, demons, ESP, magic... it is called "ANGEL SANCTUARY". I don't know if I like it, but some friends I can trust are MAD about it. CHECK IT OUT!!! (Especially you Liliana!!! ;))

Violet Gargoyle  07 Sep 2002
We have alot of manga too, both in comics and anime movie: My favorite right now is Metropolis.

Kaz  07 Sep 2002

I collected Spawn for a little while. I loved the idea but the series had gone terribly stale by the time I got into it. I started at #100 and collected it until #110 and then I stopped. Spawn sucks. It used to be so amazing but recently it's been really crappy and they are losing alot of readers from what I understand.
The only comic I collect presently is Ultimate Spider-Man which is wildly popular. My friend has been buying them for me and I pay him back a little extra. There's no comic book stores where I live and I can't be bother to go to Montreal just for a comic. I'd rather he get them for me when he goes because it's more convenient. Our #1s are worth over $100 and we're both very pleased. It's a great series. If you haven't been following it and you like Spiderman you're really missing out. The latest issue I have is #22 and he has #23 and #24 waiting for me and he tells me that #25 is coming out soon. I suggest to any of you who like Spider-Man to pick up Ultimate Spider-Man #25.

I loved Heavy Metal: The Movie ('81) and I think it was absolutely incredible. Beatiful artwork and beautiful music. It's got an orchestral score by Eymler Berstein (sp?) coupled with everything from Black Sabbath to Journey to Stevie Nicks. As it stands, greatest animation and greatest musical soundtrack of all time; without a doubt. I rented the DVD because I wanted to see how they made it (very interesting) and I wanted to see the history of the time in which they made it and what the movie represents etc... They also talked about Heavy Metal magazine and it sounds really cool. Is it still being published?

Pollux, my fave is Phoenix(duh!), but since that is only Jean Grey, then my fave would be Storm!!

My favorite X-man= Nightcrawler. I will have to see what they do with him when he shows up in the new X-men sequel that they are making now.

Phoenix  07 Sep 2002
I can't wait for that movie!! I think that Halle Barry did a great job as storm, and Famke Jansen........ sigh....

HOLMES  07 Sep 2002
MOVIES
hulk
spiderman two doc oct looks like
xmen two . beast?
fanastic four after the hulk

there was supposed to be superman vs the batman but then they pulled out so there are rumours about superman five or bathman five will come out.

comics themselves
i LOVED THE WHAT IF seris they get gothic like when the watcher died in his battle with galatus.
what if phoenix didnt' die , it was horrible she kiled wolverine by throwing him back at colouss, she killed professor x brain , buried storm alive. killed the whole world after scott died.
what if the hulk went crazy was good.
and some crazy ones like what if wolverine was an agent of shield.
some xmen stuff i didnt' follow after there was so many articles.
the ending of the what if series was my favouriite, they went back to the secrets wars 20 years after and their kids came back tothe earth (20 years togeher they bound to get close) and it was good .. not great but good.

BUT MY ALL TIME FAVOURITE WAS aunt may death spiderman 400 isuse it made me cry.
and the second time is my first death in the comics,, when the first xman died and professor x was in his brain to see it.
i don't follow comcs no more though :O(
they passed some rule that closed down lots of the old back issues comics

oh yeah who can forget howard the duck and his quackfu training. and he had anoher one where this howard stark made him a cheap butt suit with a flame thower as repulsors rays, and springs as his propulusin instead of jet boots.
it was corny needless to say he got beat up.

there was his one howard the duck big book special where dr strange saw magic capaticies in him and was offering ot teach him but howard said no.
i alwasy wanted to see a what if howard the duck became sorcerer supreme :O)\

edited
i forgot i used to have this one double edition where the archies all had superpowers.
eheh
i was thinking i know i made a marvel comic tarot post i would to see , (or at leat a whole 78 card edition )
but
WHAT IF THEY MADE ARCHIES TAROT what would death be ?(little archie growing up into archie and the ineviatable archie becoming a man
the devil (and not regge ,, eheh ,)

cricket  07 Sep 2002
I've never gotten into comics all that much, and have never actually owned one. Except one old Green Lantern one my dad gave me when I was about 6... So wouldn't know much about them. Really!

Go Wolverine! :D

tabbycat  08 Sep 2002
Swamp Thing, the Watchmen Miracleman and V for Vendetta - most of Alan Moore's output is great.
Cerebus
Strangers in Paradise
Hellblazer
Sandman, well, pretty much anything from Vertigo, really.
The Adventures of Luther Arkwright
A Distant Soil
Lone Wolf and Cub
The Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers (I just love Fat Freddy's Cat!)
Love and Rockets
Concrete
Mai the Psychic Girl
What's Michael (it's about cats!)
Books of Magic - the cover artist of Harry Potter ripped these off!
I also have two pretty old series, Moonshadow and Silverheels, with incredible painted artwork.
I live with a guy who sells comics, so I suppose I get more exposure to them than most people. I have to confess that I used to read X-Men and my favourite quote from comics is the splash panel of an issue where Storm's lost her powers, which opens with the line 'Once there was a woman who could fly...'

He he, my fav is Storm too. :D I cannot fly, but I do have some of her powers, especially when I am really depressed - just ask my family. ;) *LOL*
I must admit I also loved the animation series, Storm was great in it: the dubber had such an appropriate voice! Great great great... In the movie, well... yucky version. But I rpomised I would rent it and see it again and again and again till I got hooked.
Strom rocks. "Storm" - the name is enough! :D
Well, I am rambling and being idiotic, so'll stop.
(My second fav is Psylocke, and third is Gambit)

WolfSpirit  08 Sep 2002
I'm with kaz: I also like Asterix en Obelix.
And Lucky Luke, Guust Flater and Robbedoes. They probably exist in different languages too but I don't know under what name.

Poetlove  08 Sep 2002
I used to have some of the Disney ones, with Mr. McSrooge, and Webby, I have some of the Archie ones, and I have gotten into Magic: The Gathering, and others like it.

Violet Gargoyle  08 Sep 2002
tabbycat- V for Vendetta is one of my all time favorite comic stories! I remember at one time they were working on a movie based off this, about 5 years ago, but I am rather glad they didn't. I probably would have been sorely disappointed!

Yes, it was so dark, chilling and downright scary, wasn't it? The B&W artwork really set the spooky atmosphere too. I don't think that any film would ever do it justice. You'd need it to be in B&W and be directed by Hitchcock or the guy who directed the Third Man.

Not much into comics. But I did enjoy Archie (when I was younger)... and (later) X-men. :)

VGimlet  08 Sep 2002
For about 15 years one of my co-workers also worked at a used bookstore and Comic shop.
So, I have all three of the original Robotech series. The Mike Grell Green Arrows, Camelot 3000, Evangeline, the TICK ("I am not a flea, I am a tick!") the Sandman, and a few other series. I loved spooky comics, and read those a lot when I was a kid. My mom subscribed to Heavy Metal Magazine for me when it first came out in the US , because I was very into graphic art. I have a lot of Moebius' stuff too.

But since my friend stopped working there, it's a hassle to collect any more.

Red raven  08 Sep 2002
I love comic books. I never actually read them, but the art is something else. It's one of the few places you see amazing inkwork and CG combined.

napaea  08 Sep 2002
We love Batman! so collect all types of the different ones in the Batman categories: Poison Ivy, Catwoman, Huntress, Azrael.

Love Vertigo titles:
Animal Man, Black Orchid, Books of Magic, The Dreaming (love these!), house of secrets,

also:
chase, cyberella, little red hot, spirit of the tao, the tenth, witchblade, warrior nun, sandman...

i could go on,
we have around 1,000 comics, which isn't nearly as many as we'd like!

I have some of her p[owers too LOL! I have practised enough that I can summon winds at will, and if I concentrade hd enough, then I can create a storm. Actually, come to think of it, weather magick seems to be my specialty.

I just recently started looking at manga style because my illustration style mixes ink, watercolor pens and brushwork in similar ways to Amano...I found a Sandman comic book today that speaks of the Monk and Inari (?) or Fox spirit. The Pulp series from Japan has interesting illustration styles and there's a few historical-based comics from Japan that also interest me because of their similarity to woodcut print quality.
Since my favorite modern Japanese tarot is Moon Princess Himiko majors, courts and aces with their marbelized patterning, I'm curiously looking for similar illustrations.

I thought that "The Dream Hunters" (what it got called in the US, Not sure if the name changed internationally) was a beautiful piece. I absolutely loved Amano's take on Morpheus.

I also have the Amano Tarot cards.....

I understand SOOOOOOOOOOOO WELL!!!! :D
That was exatcly what I meant! :D

Lately I am getting very good at it too, and I am taking advantage of it probably...
The Wind is probably my childhood link to paganism and magick. I've always sensed the presence of its spirit, and elementals. It has always been familiar to me.
Storms and rain are getting as good too lately. And I am loving it! :)

WOWOWOW!!!!!!
I had a Storm-like brother and I didn't know that! :D

I also think it's due to my soul... I have a notion it belongs to a stormy environment (a cliff, and the rest of it... bla bla bla :P). It could be...

I've always been a fan of DC Comics superheroes from the Sixties. The pseudo-mod references, the loopy stories, and the goofy scientific explanations are a hoot.

The fantastic four were also good at this. I just saw one of the 70's version of the spiderman cartoon with the Fan4 in it. Talk about cheese drama!

I also have the Amano Tarot cards.....

Ahh, Violet, I'm following you ... that is, tarotwise. The comic that I got is the Dreamhunters and I was taken with the revisions and take on the Monk tale. I'm getting the Amano Tarot through Sasuga books, it's definitely worth 35 or so dollars to me.
Jeanette Roth's review on wicce.com is excellent and even has some romanji titles/translations.
For myself...
I had put together a minors outline, some illustrations (but I don't post illustrations on the web or do digital any more for many reasons)...and just now remembered my majors retelling came from an old poem series, some minor retellings of old folktales. (For instance, the idea of transformation from a carp to dragon is a by-your-way mention in a poem. ) The ideas of my minors is more like a family merging as people of different cultures merge in the 20th and 21st centuries. I'm hoping to work with No masks and seasonal references that I collected from heritage studies...The ideas of the majors will be mythlike--transmutation and transformation coming from the merging of different elements.
I think over time after looking at tarot structures, it also helps to look at old folktales to draw lessons, develop storylines and archetypes. Many artists/authors seem to have done this from cultures that fascinate them or they've inherited.
I'll probably fail, but it makes me respect the successful ones even more.
