Survivor V (Thailand) will be aired soon. And I'm curious...

Who watches Survivor in here? :D

Do you like it? Or do you hate it?

Who's your favorite player? And least favorite?

I love it... and yet I hate it... if that makes any sense. *LOL*

Oh well... still quite entertaining. :P

Laurel  16 Sep 2002
I don't watch Survivor. However, Survivor (Austraila) had, as its official participant psychologist, the same amazing woman that work hired to talk to us Web Analysts and make sure seeing 40 hours a week of hardcore pornography including sadly lots of child pornography wasn't traumatizing us.

So she'd tell us very interesting stories about what Survivor was like backstage, things she could talk about without breaking confidiality. I loved Survivor stories. That was as close as I ever got to watching. :)

we (my sister and i live together) LOVE Survivor!
she is a sociologist, so we usually tape the show, and pause when we have to talk about something. it's so fascinating to watch people interact in this environment! and i love the challenges they set up - always very artistically pleasing and also difficult. but yeah, we discuss the show for hours! it's sooo interesting, and because of the nature of the situation, we have never gotten tired of the show, no matter what season. it's always different and interesting.

Rhiannon  16 Sep 2002
I can't wait! It starts this Thursday! I've already gone to the website and checked out the new contestants. (addict or what?) And at the finale I always try to get together with at least one of my friends who watches and make a party of it. After each show my best friend and I always call and say "I told you so-and-so was getting voted off!"

R :)

napaea  21 Sep 2002
hey, good point! i've never been to the website! i LOVE all the really cool symbols they make for every season! i very much want some stuff with all that on it; tee shirt, beach towel, toilet paper! ha!

* spoiler * don't read if you haven't seen it yet...
what did you guys think of the first episode?
1. i love Jeff Probst...he's cute!, and very laid back.
2. love the beginning, it's gorgeous!
3. sooooooo glad they booted the preacher. we were worried it would be Ghandia, but the preacher! and he was all thinking it was a conspiracy! i'm like: "honey! you are just toooooo bossy and overbearing! no alliance needed for this vote!"

Rhiannon  21 Sep 2002
I was happy he was out too. So far my fave is the little police officer from the purple team. He's just so adorable and soft-spoken. But, then again... we haven't seen very much of him, so I suppose he could be a jerk and we just don't know it yet.

I knew before the show aired that I didn't like the bartender. I mean, pardon me for yelling but WHO THE HELL BRINGS A FRIGGIN' SKATEBOARD TO AN ISLAND IN THAILAND!!!!! Duh! Did he think there were going to be sidewalks or something???? What an idiot. And he's causing all kinds of friction. I hope they lose immunity so he can be booted.

Can't wait to see next week's episode.

RedWood  21 Sep 2002
I love Survivor...What was that lady thinking when she chose those people for her tribe??? They guy had it right! I agree teh preacher had to go!!!!

Strega  21 Sep 2002
Ayuh... John had to go. :D

Glad Ghandia can stay. :)

Melvis  21 Sep 2002
I think the woman's (Jan is her name?) team will live better on the island because I think they'll end up being more resourceful than the younger team, but I think the younger team will win more of the challenges.

I'm glad John's gone. I think if he'd stayed any longer, he would have gotten an alliance together and been able to stick around until the end.

I worry about the skateboard dude, though (Robb?) He's just the kind of guy that some people might keep around, because you know no one would vote for him at the end! :D I guess it all depends on whether or not they can stand him for 39 days! Although, I don't know if any of the people on the younger team is thinking that far ahead at this point. I know I won't be able to stand him for very long, however. What an a$$!

Peace,

Melvis

Hmm, I've never watched Survivor, but it sounds a lot like Big Brother, which is very popular in the UK and which I've also never watched. ;p

What *is* Survivor anyways? :)

Eyes of Night  21 Sep 2002
I've actually only seen the first season. I stopped watching until my sister made me watch the end of the second season. I've never seen the other ones. I heard this one is different than the rest. How so?

Liliana  21 Sep 2002
survivor they sent them to a hostil environment to survive, its more like Britains Castaway only they have 2 teams and the teams compete against each other, losing team has to vote someone from their team out of the game. This year the environmant is Thailand

Its different this year because they started them off in groups of all males, all females. Then tey said elders were resprected, and took the oldest female and oldest male and THEY chose the tams, alternatig male and femaale with the female choosing the first male and the male choosing the first female. What else is different we dont know yet as theirs only been one episode

And I also watch Big Brother, american Big Brother is ending this week, 2 episodes left.

I bought a Tarot Card off ebay used i the Ghost Night episode of last years Big Brother. They said the house was haunted, so Big Brother thought itd be fun to give them a Tarot deck and a Ouija board to use to see if it was. Dont think they found anything. But I got the High Priestess, signed by Kent, one of the members of last yeares house. Anyone who watched it knows thats a big irony lol

:THP

VGimlet  22 Sep 2002
Survivor is my guilty TV pleasure, LOL. I watch very little TV, but I am hooked. I don't watch any of the other reality shows, (except if Ken happens to be watching one when I sit down to hang out with him) but for some reason I like Survivor.
I thought last season was very interesting - the final few episodes were so unexpected. :)

the hermit  22 Sep 2002
This is what some of my fellow americans call reality tv.

I saw enough previews of the original shows (survivor, big brother, etc) to know that I wasn't going to watch them. I'm sorry, but for reasonably intelligent people such as those I know on this forum to watch this is just sort of beyond me.

And given all the rumors on the web about the "fixing" that many say goes on in these shows... why waste your time.

How many law suits are pending over these things anyway... and at least one season of what was it? survivor I believe? ended up giving ALL of the contestants prize money because of "irregularities" in the outcome and the lawsuit that was threatened.

Oh well...

I'd much rather watch Animal Planet with Nigel thank you very much. :D

Sorry...
Rant complete. })

Melvis  22 Sep 2002
Your right, hermit, about not trusting that the outcome is 'pure'! I'm fully aware that this is a created reality program, and that what I'm seeing has been edited to appear a certain way.

I just think they do a good job of creating that reality! :D I think the producers are very good in that they know they have to create conflict where there may not be any, and create entire relationships out of looks and glances between people in order for the viewing public to give a rat's a** about the Survivors.

Basically, I think it comes down to telling a good story. I don't watch Survivor because I think it's real. If the story is good and the characters are engaging, I'm willing to suspend disbelief that it's 'real' in order to enjoy the program. And I do...weekly! :D

Peace,

Melvis

napaea  22 Sep 2002
actually i do believe it. call me gullible. but did you see last season? here is a guy who is in it for the idea of creating a society from a group of strangers - Gabrielle - and he is positive, hard working, and could care less about the money. and they boot him off right away! that defies logic!

anyway, as i said earlier Hermit, there are many shows i watch because the fascinating situations in them bring up many things to discuss with my sister. we talk for hours after we watch shows, and get into deep, sociological, philosophical, religious, and other discussions. it is basically a jumping board for us to challenge ourselves to grow. and this show does it because it is so fascinating to watch human behaviour.

watching this show doesn't indicate that we are any less intelligent than anyone else around here. it's just a preference and an interest to us.

Napaea, I mean no offence with what I am going to say.
I understand your point, I do. Yet I find it a bit... "sad". Why bother to sit in front of a telly, sending coloured vibes to your retina, when you can just "live" your life and get the same jumping-board effect?
Actually, such reality shows hardly ever worked as stiumuli for engaging conversation with friends or relatives of mine. I actually wonder how that could possibly be, since the perspective is limited, narrow, biased, unreal despite any obiection you might have.
I think it is more challenging to observe and discuss such dynamics in a reality I can relate to, i.e. in real life AND in a real life that is close to me. How can such a remote and made-up condition in a Thai island relate to anything close to me?
And the scope and the perspective are so possibly narrow. And you don't even know if that (excuse the opinion) rubbish is real or just plotted down by the smart producer of the week...

Well, I should conclude my post... *LOL*
I just watched BB and Survivor (we get Italian versions, at leat sin something we don't wait for US stuff... :P) - the first episodes, and something in the middle, and maybe something in the end.
I find it so dull! And Boring. There's nothing to analyse for me. It's all fake. And the self-same situation they are in is so fake as well... Analysys and Discussion are not tenable, they are not faced with real/everyday life.
The bits of social dynamics are so narrow and elementary that it seems like the producers made all they could to keep it simple, and it's just fishy, and I repeat dull... *LOL*

I don't like that kind of shows. bleah. :P

RedWood  22 Sep 2002
Pollux...some of us are tired of reality...lol...I think it does open discussions...Religion for one..and why has no one brought a tarot deck as their luxury? What use is a necklace? i mean really dont you think you should bring something useful...Then it teeters down what you would take if you were on it..or what is most important to you..then to why...and finding out just a bit more about that person...lol...Anyway..i like rubbish so all HAIL SURVIVOR!!

But I meant a$$ in the nicest possible way! ;)

And I'm with RedWood...my reality is too boring! I choose to live vicariously! :D

So far for luxury items we have:
1 guitar and pick
1 golf club and ball
1 skateboard
1 lucky keychain w/kid's picture
1 daughter's doll
1 brush
1 picture of family
1 shaving kit
1 body paint (!)
1 journal w/pen
1 frisbee
1 NYPD shield (badge)
1 pajamas
1 lucky travelling bag from China
1 pair of fuzzy slippers

No real duplicates this year, oh... and John had a Christian Flag for his item, but he's gone now. A few items here are stupid, but some make sense, if they use them correctly. I like the frisbee!

R :)

RedWood  23 Sep 2002
True Rhiannon..
maybe if they caught an animal they can use the shaver to shave the hair off? LOL...
The skateboard could be good to drag stuff...
Umm picture of kid..well i dont see it as useful...I love my son..but....I want something that can be used..
Guitar for entertainment..firewood if all else fails? hehe.
..Golf club..walking stick..to bonk something or someone? on the head lol
fuzzy slippers would just get gross..all the bugs etc..
brush..for sure..my hair would be beyond knotted!
the shield..well that is just understandable but still....
Daughters doll..ugh it would get gross..
body paint...so many possibilities lol
frisbee..plate or just the game itself
Journal--well Vespia used hers well
I hope that travelling bag is water proof! extra space to put junk in lol..well thats abou tit!

Liliana  23 Sep 2002
Paint is good, remember the paint made all the difference in the visible SOS competition the other season :)

Skateboard for transport of water, i guess may help , but its so bumpy it might be more troublre than its worth (remembering trying to push strollers in gravel)

Flag would of been useful, but he needed to go

Stuff like fuzzy slippers i guess would keep your feet warm for the first day, until the rain got em eeewww

pictures, dolls, travel bags, i would never bring something extremely dear with me, as its liklely to be ruined

journal is and pen can be useful, paper for fire starting, place to play games like hangman or tic tac toe, place to write down thoughts and strategy, take apart the pen and make a spit ball shooter ;)

bade, if it has a pin, could be useful for getting in shellfish and possibly even sewing

pajamas was stupid, you are allowed to pack enough clothes that pajamas as luxury is just dumb. You know how bad theyd smell if you tried to wear them every night. that was silly

brush and razor, grooming items i cant blame them for, but personally no way in heck id care how i looked out there, even if im on tv

golf club, weapon of choice for hunting hehe

guitar is entertainment for awhile, but after a couple months i think it WOULD be fire wood, i doubt io could stand so much of it lol

Id love to bring a tarot deck, itd be entertainment and give me an inside edge heheh ;) but things like flags are also useful for various things. Binoculars might be a good choice too, or a compass lol

I think limited jewlry can be brought and not be counted as a luxury, rember the guy last year had all those piercings and had rings in, and most females wear a single necklace, tho if you wanted a locket or something thatd be a luxury

:THP

Liliana  23 Sep 2002
Oh and hermit "reality" tv is like wrestling, sure its all fake but it doesnt make it less entertaining ;)

and "reality" tv isnt quite all fake, i dont believe what all is said to each other is scripted, but i believe some of it probably is fixed

:THP

what can i say? actually, i am an artist, and one part of that is that i am an actress. so anything on t.v. or in the movies is of POSSIBLE interest to me, from the sheer perspective of my actress in me. my sister is very interested in directing in the future. so we watch a lot of stuff because it gives us ideas, encourages us to keep on our path and keep at our goals, and gives us ideas about how we want to portray things when it is our turn in the limelight.

so, sitting and watching tv is part of living my life!
it's kind of training camp!

Strega  27 Sep 2002
Tanya got voted off. :(

Liliana  27 Sep 2002
she was sick, that was expected, besides she told them she would understand if they voted her off

Frankly i think they should of made her the director i the luxury challange and let her sit out of immunity chalange.

When i saw that huge snake, my first thought was kill it and eat it, my mom said she thought the same of the monkey lol, i think that monkey is this seasons prop animal, like the crocodile that never moved the other season hehe

:THP

Rhiannon  27 Sep 2002
I think Ghandia's thought of voting off Helen just because she didn't like her is flawed. She's a strong competitor and you need that in the early stages. Especially considering that the other team, Sook Jai, has all the younger castaways.

My personal choices for this tribal council were Jan and Tanya. I felt Tanya needed to go because she was sick, and obviously wasn't interested in getting better; and Jan because she doesn't really have the strength to pull through on the challenges. She is very nice, but she just can't pull her own weight right now. I hope she proves me wrong!

Anyway, I enjoyed the episode. I have a feeling that Chuay Gan is gonna be another one of those come-from-behind tribes. At least I hope so. Next week's preview was interesting.

R :)

napaea  27 Sep 2002
i agree, Rhiannon. my sister and i just laughed and laughed...they want to keep Jan on, who can't row a boat, get water, run or swim, but they are going to vote off a Navy swim instructor! ha ha ha!!
yeah, i understand having personal problems with people, and wanting your tribe to get along, but this early in the game they need to be winning some challenges. and Jan isn't the best bet for that. I don't remember much about Tanya, but I'm glad Helen didn't go yet.

just heard that the latest installment to the survivor series is being shot here in the philippines! in siquijor, an island fabled to be inhabitted by witches, elementals, shapeshifters, and other beings of chaos and magick (of course, this is my attempt at translating the native concepts behind these into english). :)

RedWood  28 Sep 2002
Ohhh cool blue fusion...

I would of voted off Jan..She can not pull her own weight...

Yeah... it's a family thing... almost everyone in my family is in the U.S. (including my bf)... it can get pretty lonely here (with just my brother - that evil sort of a troll *JK* - to live with :D). :)

It would be interesting to watch Survivor (Philippines - how true is that?)... I can't imagine any threats... 'cept perhaps the weather and the Abu Sayaff. :D
