Who paints here??

I am kinda curious as to who paints here??? I for one do. What mediums do you work in?? What colours are your favorites??

I work in a variety of mediums. Watercolour, pastel(soft), acrylics, and oils. I have a lot of fave colours, but the ones that stand out are Aureolin yellow, and Prussian blue.

Another question for those who paint in watercolours. What do you use to stretch large sheets of watercolour paper???

DarkElectric  06 Sep 2002
I paint in the medium of latex semi gloss, bathrooms are my specialty.

That's about it, I envy people who can paint for real. I dabble with watercolour, and label the resulting mess "Abstract".

cricket  06 Sep 2002
I do, I do! er... did. I used to work in just about any medium I could get my paws on, including 'mud' paints - different colored specimen of earth ground down and mixed with water, then used like dyes in a batik fashion.

The local gallery was going to run a few of my things when I found out I was pregnant the first time, but cancelled (very strict town, refused to put them up because I was pregnant and single) so I gave up. Now I do the occasional small watercolor, charcoal, and pencil sketches more than anything.

Strega  06 Sep 2002
I do! I've been painting since I was a child. My father and I share the same passion. :)

I love working with oil, watercolor, and pastel. I have a lot of favorite colors -- some of which are Cerulean Blue, Burnt Sienna, and Alizarin Crimson.

Phoenix  06 Sep 2002
I love cerulean blue too, but havent found a watercolour brand of it that I like. I tried Grumbacher, but it went gritty. An trying Winsor and Newton Cotman now. Which brand do you use, Strega??

BTW, I like Burnt Sienna to. I find it to be very useful!

Strega  06 Sep 2002
I use Grumbacher and Winsor & Newton primarily. Also Liquitex but I can't find some at the moment. You? :)

Violet Gargoyle  06 Sep 2002
I can't say I paint, I like collaging though. Smell of cement glue at 2am.....

cricket  06 Sep 2002
Try Koi (I think it is) for a good cerulean watercolor.

Phoenix  06 Sep 2002
I didn't know Liquitex put out a watercolor line. What papers do you use for pastels, Strega?? Do you use sanded papers??

Strega  06 Sep 2002
Thanks, cricket. I'll look that up too. :)

Yes, I started using Liquitex (Watercolor) in 1991 I think. It was a little cheaper. :P But I like Grumbacher better. :)

I do my pastel paintings on Canson paper mainly... sometimes etching paper or Masonite board. You? :)

Phoenix  06 Sep 2002
Canson mostly, but have been looking for a sanded paper to use water on. I did a pastel course this past July, and we used a sanded paper from Art Spectrum. I loved it, but it is very expensive! I am currently trying to make my own.

I like Grumbacher as well, but I also like the Winsor and Newton Cotman line. I have a few of the W&N Artists' line. There are a few that I would like to try, mainly DaVinci, and Daniel Smith.

Red raven  07 Sep 2002
I envy all you painterly-like people. I've never had a good hand when it comes to paint.

Finger painting is the greatest, though.

kayne  07 Sep 2002
*ME* (Whoh! Big surprise :P) I lived a year of my life alone in a little country town and this was the best time to paint. I did so much that year! Now... most of the work that hangs around my house is from then and I am really starting to feel the need for something new.

My medium of choice is Oils but I usually use a lot of real objects in the paintings too. One of my favourites is painted on Masonite and has fairy lights running through it... Looks great in a variety of different lighting situations! :D

Lately most of my work has been done on the computer... but sometimes I really feel the need to get back to the gritty stuff and get messy!

As far as stretching water colour paper, Phoenix, I always bought pre-stretched paper... is this cheating?

Phoenix  07 Sep 2002
Pre-stretched!? I didn't know you could get that! I usually stretch my own, but only smallish sheets. I just wonder how people soak the large sheets.

jema  07 Sep 2002
i am like violet gargoyle, i like to do collages and i do paint on many of those. unfortunatly all my scanned work was deleted by that nasty hacker.

i also like to paint just for myself with pastel crayons, i use the hard and dry kind, called Nouvel Carré Pastel.

i also use watercolors and acrylics when i feel like it - oh and those fat oily crayons are cool too. (but messy)

and i use objects like old papermoney, pressed flowers and found objects.

i haven't done anything new all summer though. for me painting is something i do during the winter
during the summer i paint pretty colours with flowers in my garden and take photos instead:)

Rhiannon  07 Sep 2002
I've taken up the crafty type of painting on my furniture and on little plaques and things. I'm not very good at it yet. So far I've painted a dresser, my entertainment center, my kitchen chairs, my steps (!)... can you tell I'm bored???? LOL I use a combination of Latex (if I have the right color on hand, why not?) and acrylics. And I LOVE spray paint!

I really enjoy painting each room of my house. I no longer have any white walls (unless you count the ceiling.. i'm working on that...). Some of the colors I've used are:

Entrance: goldenrod
Upstairs hallway: light blue and pale yellow (different walls)
kitchen: navy blue, white and maroon
daughter's room: pepto bismol pink
son's room: white and robin's egg blue
my room: turned into like a "flesh" color! will be painted over!
downstairs bathroom: dark blue with stamped stars
upstairs bathroom: sea green with textured fish
my bathroom: dark rose
living room: terra cotta clay color (browny-orange)

R :)

You are right, pastels are like crayons, but it is still called a painting. ;)

truthsayer  07 Sep 2002
i use oil and acrylic the most b/c the surfaces i can paint on are more versatile for one. the other is that as a painting medium, they are easier to control than watercolor. when i do watercolor, i prefer watercolor pencils to the tubes or paint trays. i use colored pencil and pen and ink. i enjoy multimedia, too. i like painting on a variety of surfaces--canvas, paper or wood. right now i'm experiementing w/ acrylics and sponges on wood. i've been testing different color combinations to do a wooden plaque of underwater scene. the water will be different tones of blue in sponged shapes. then i'm doing a wooden box to put my tarot cards. this is a medium blue, dark blue, and gold sponged design. on the lid, i'm painting a blue rose against a soft gold background. if these ideas work out then i'm doing some plaques and boxes as christmas presents.

this past summer i took a painting class that was combined w/ creative writing. i was really amazed at how well writing and painting enhance each other. i hope to do some more of this. my painting was freer and not as structured as it usually is.

Alissa  08 Sep 2002
I paint with henna on people to create temporary body art

Poetlove  10 Sep 2002
I don't paint as often as I draw. Unless you consider the computer. I am in school now for Graphic Design. I like just about anything.

don't those come in stick form, and can be mixed with turpentine, to be liquid? i think they're called craypass in these areas. anyway's i also loved using them (in their dry, yet oily form) in making works, but they're kinda messy to handle... :)

retrokat  11 Sep 2002
I paint (see http://www.kattyb.com - describes my technique) but was always frustrated by the limitations of my talent. I mean, I LOVE working with colour and the act of painting is a beautiful, physical & sensual experience - but the end product was never good enough to make me happy. My first digital tarot deck (pre-web) was based on my own artwork, but it wasn't ever worth showing to anyone.

I know a lot of artists consider collage "cheating" but I've been so much happier with my digital collaged tarot deck that I could ever have been with one I painted myself.

It never ceases to amaze me that with modern graphics software, you can basically create anything that you can imagine - which is unbelievably freeing, even for an experienced 'real' artist.

But then, I'll never give up painting. It's such a satisfying thing to do, and I would only ever have original artwork on my walls (not my own).

To those of you who say you can't paint... give it a go. Revel in the process. Just dragging a colour-soaked brush across a blank sheet can be a thrilling experience. Or... at least have a go with graphics software. Enjoy playing with it, without being too fussed about the result. You might surprise yourself.

*We are all artists*
