As opposed to your new favorite band...

I am looking to expand on the space in my mp3 player.

Now, I have already picked up some of my favorite newer acts, being The Hives, The Vines, and The White Stripes (Having a garage band phase this week).

But I will listen to almost anything, soft or loud, conventional or not.

I cant say I like one particular genre over the next, I just know what I like. So-

Whats your favorite new act out there right now?

Telepopmusik!!! They are french and include a bit of hiphop, bit of nostalgia, if you like Massive Attack and Morcheeba, go Telepopmusik! :D

ACK! You came first... :(
However I'll be much more useful than you 8)

Visit this link: http://www.telepopmusik.com/
Choose High or Low Band, depending on your connection (it should be speedy). Check the link "The Player", and a couple new pages will load up, one of which is the console - push Play. I have no idea if your connection is good enough. I really hope so.

Anyway, careful...

I really like the Swollen Members at the moment!! I just don;t know if you like the rap/dance/I don't know thing.

jema  01 Sep 2002
kind of new and swedish girlband: Sahara Hotnights

i also love muse, dear nora, kid 606, woob and so on and on. i used to have 5 gigs of mp3 files i lost due to that hacker:(

Being an old fogie, I often buy compilations....try one of the "Traveller Series" from Six degrees records - I particularly like Traveller '99 and Traveller '01. You can find out more here:
http://www.sixdegreesrecords.com/travelseries/artists/t2001/index.htm

I also love Putumayo records - my current fav is "World Lounge" This link takes you to some samples from it: http://www.putumayo.com/cd_global/world_lounge.html

I also love their compilations "Music from the Coffeelands" and "Music from the Coffeelands 2"

For music that is a little more "mainstream" I am currently liking "Brother Down" from a three person band called Sam Roberts. Getting alot of airplay lately. And Incubus. Never mind the screaming girlies arguing about who is cuter - the music is good.

P.S. Kayne & Pollux, both hubs and I are now addicated to Telepopmusik.

Durn you both! LOL!

I forgot I could mention a northern group, I think they are swedish - Jema will confirm. They are called Royksopp (unsure about the spelling) and they make electro-dance. I don't know if they are growing more popular actually... I just know that whoever I talk to either has never heard of them, or does not like them... Too Bad. :P

Want some Italian flavour?
Try Subsonica. They are not new in Italy at all - I used to listen to them 6 years ago maybe, or less... Anyway they are finally famous and established here, and probably will be trying to infect Europe as well. Their music is Funky-Hard-Ska, with some electronic bits and good groove. The lyrics are in italian, so just focus on the music. If you are going to download MP3 in a File Sharing Community you will find their songs (I suggest: "Colpo di Pistola", "Tutti i miei sbagli", "Disco Labirinto", and whatever you find of the new album).
http://www.subsonica.it/dischi/amorematico/amorematico.htm

Amyel, I have no fault, I just gave a silly link; take it out on Kayne. }) *LOL*
And I like Incubus too, but I don't know, they sound so... mainstream and un-new, not so original actually... I still have to understand their music maybe. And I DO think none of them is cute - less than ever the front-guy. *LOL*

jema  02 Sep 2002
so the next question is of course - which filesharing program are you using?
i tried many but i have to say that when audiogalaxy more or less shut down i haven't really downloaded anything.

oh and if anyone is worried. at least in sweden it is perfectly legal to download music from the net:)

Pollux  02 Sep 2002
Jema tell me about Royksopp!!!
You forgot! :(

Pleaseeeeeee :D

jema  02 Sep 2002
i think you have to ask aeonx about them instead. they are from Norway:)

but you can read a bit here and even listen to some songs:
www.epitonic.com/artists/royksopp.html

by the way - epitonic is a great site for new music! check it out.

jema  02 Sep 2002
the hives are swedish though;)

oh and if you like elektronica you might wanna check these out:
Jaffa, kid 606, 4hero, muziq, woob

but i really love the older stuff. like Yo La Tengo and Guided by voices and Godspeed You Black Emperor and even some small portions of Sigur Ros (they will drown you in sweetness if you listen to them too long)

and i adore even older music!
van morrisoon, neil young, velvet underground, it's a beautiful day and joni mitchell.
(Yeah, i know i am straying from the topic here)

Kismet  02 Sep 2002
I really don't have a favorite new band. There is a singer named Vanessa Carlton that is quite amazing. She plays piano as well as sings, the piano in her music is just fabulous.
Jema, you asked of file sharing programs.
I was on napster a bit before it closed, now I use Kazza, and newsgroups. I also use mIRC. mIRC is a chat program but they also have channels where you can exchange files.
Try mIRC.com to download mirc. Then find newnet in the list of servers. When you connect to it, go to a channel called mp3_galaxy.

Kismet and Jema-

I used to be a Napster user as well, now it depends on the computer I am on (we actually have 2) I was using Bearshare on the PC, but then I got the ipod, I have been using Limewire on the Macintosh, since Bearshare didnt have a good version for Apple users.

Although I miss Bearshare a bit, it seems to have more international users, which I liked (I can buy the stuff sold in the US, but bands that are more popular outside the US are harder to find)

By the way, thanks for all the suggestions so far, keep them coming, all the bands yous suggested are ones I would certainly listen to. And thank you for NOT mentioning David Hasselhoff.....

David *sings*???? And here I thought he was just one dimensional poster boy!!!!! LOL

DarkElectric  02 Sep 2002
The Magnetic Fields. Luna. I know they aren't exactly new, but I like them anyway. And you guys are joking about David Hasslehoff, right?

After the cancelletion of assinine Bay Watch, I thought it was safe to go back in the water...

ARGH!!!
I just turned on the telly this evening, and on MTV the Europe Top 20 (I guess) was on...
At the 6th place: TIZIANO FERRO!!!
He is a new Italian singer, but... UGH!!! His music is worse than any other emerging Italian "artist" (excuse me the improper word) made, EVER!!! Please, tellme it won't become popular in UK, or anywhere else... I expect some feedback from the UK & European buddies. Don't keep me waiting too long, I might not resist...
My advice: escape before it's too late.

But MTV is good to me tonight: there's a special on Depeche Mode! :D

And I know Kayne will ki@k my ass for suggesting them as *new*, but hey,try Kosheen and then tell me...
"if you were in my heart I'd surely not break you
If you were beside and my love would take you..."

I think my suggestions are getting too electro-dance oriented...

i really have no idea - i just use this as an excuse to mention how much a LOVE Einstürzende Neubauten. they are not new and hardly what you might call indie either, they used to be headcleaning, heartshattering industrial noice - now they are more mellow. i guess that is what ages does to us.
*sigh*

Liliana  03 Sep 2002
My favorite band is a local band that uses to be called Midnight Speical but due to copyright issues recently changed its name to six years gone. They dont have any full songs on their site, but the do have 3 teaser clips at www.sixyearsgone.com , just enter then click audio. Their CD is only 5 bucks, but I really expect them to get big someday, they'e already had some national play. Got to see them twice yesterday, and saw Michael Damien too, go autographed pics of Michael Damien :)

:THP

kayne  03 Sep 2002
A couple of German bands that I love Blue_fusion, but they are not that 'Indie'... more kinda chill-out/jazz/electronic... De Phazz are brilliant, Mo' Horizens and I *think* Beanfield are German. Very cool :D

LAMB!!! You have to download something by Lamb!!! (Lamb are not German... they are brittish and are amazing live!)

amyel  03 Sep 2002
Blue Fusion, if you want German, try Trubey Trio. But they are also kinda chill-out lounge, too.
