Hello Aeclecticans!
In a few weeks I am going to be moving into a new (old) house. The house is older than any I have lived in before, it was built in about 1910 and is really beautiful... but what about... 'psychic baggage'? (That is probably the wrong term... I made that up :P) Could the house contain anything unseen that might be undesirable? How can I remedy the situation if there is?

burn cedar. it clears the negativity from your new home.

also boiling it works really really really well. you take the end pieces from the cedar bush (with permission from the bush of course -= offering tabacco in exchange for it's branches) the 3 prong ends...you take 3, 6 or 9 of these and put them in a pot of water on the stove. be sure to not ever need the pot for cooking again!

boil and boil and boil it.....keep all the windows closed except the window in the house farthest from the stove. do this for about 8-12 hours, adding water as you go along.................then at the end of the day, pour yourself a bath and pour the cedar tea (without the cedar bush pieces) into your bath. get in and completely immerse yourself into the water,..........your face, head, all of you. it will also give you a very good cleansing! (woman can not do this during their moontime)

:)

or

just cast a circle and do a little spellwork to remove and release any negativity that may be there. :)

in light,
jade

ps your home sounds beautiful!

Hmm... I like the idea of the Ceder one Jade but I wonder if there is an Australian alternative... I don't think Ceder is easily available around here... Can Eucalypt be used for similar purposes?

I had written this house cleaning spell awhile back. I use it when we moved into this apartment a few months ago. I sprinkled holywater twice in each spot, I randomly picked spots throught the apartment, each time saying:

I sprinkle once, I sprinkle twice,
This holywater to ignite,
for God and Goddess to make bright
and rid this place of any spite.

Then after all that, I try to get in the middle most spot of the house or apartment then say:

What's left behind is only grace.
White Light now surrounds this place.

Hope this helps, I think this will also LEAVE any GOOD vibes going on anywhere in your house. Sometimes a place or a certain room just feels HAPPY, and you'd probably want that feeling to stay.

Whoa there…
Check the house out before you blithely clean it! What if…What if there is some good psychic baggage…
Not all spirits are unhappy. Come to terms with them and you may find them like a part of the family.
Investigate before you castigate.

This isn't entirely conventional ...

But when I move into a new room and feel like there's something 'yicky' in there, I sprinkle salt water (sometimes with essential oil) from my chalice around the floor. I leave it a wee while and then vacumn it up.

Of course, I cast a circle round the place too, and normally burn some incence... but the vacumning bit is the most fun! Just imagining all the yickies flying off the floor and *vooooom* into the vacumn bag... :D

Good luck for the move, Kayne!

What a wonderful opportunity for you! I love older houses.
Whenever I moved into a new place I always do a house cleansing ritual. I find that burning sage really helps. I carry burning sage into every room in the house, even opening closets and cabinets as I go. Then I sprinkle blessed salt and water over everything. Next I go into each room and make alot of noise...usually with drums or you can even beat on pans. Next I carry a candle to each room and say aloud something like "all things that are baneful or harmful to me are gone. Only things that will will live in harmony here with me remain."
I also place a pentacle over each doorway.
I usually do this ritual each year or anytime the place just starts feeling "icky"
Good luck!

Kayne, cedar essential oil is really easy to find.
And I believe that Jurlique sells Australian Cedar wood essential oil. It will be available through their stores, myer/grace bros and david jones, maybe even your chemist. I always burn Juniper in a new home. It goes wonderfully with lime oil.
Umbrae is right- check out the energies first- they may be great ones. Abd maybe state the intention that this is only to remove negative energies.
If you are into visualisation, visualise cleaning out yucky cobwebs, mud and dirt.

He Kayne
If cedar isn't easy to get maybe Sage is? I have used it in every room moved in.... In a student flat you can be sure that there where a lot of people before you and some student just leave very nasty energy in there rooms ;)

Hi Kayne, I agree with umbrae,
Some spirits add to a home, and are not all negative. It is an old house so it will have some baggage, all houses do, but when you walked round it did you notice anything out of the ordinary, any feelings at all, is there a reason why you want to purge it?
I like the feel of some old homes, my house is around 65 years old and as soon as I walked in I new it had been a happy place. Course the smell of lavender that wafts around adds to it lol :)

Thankyou all for your wonderful advice and suggestions!
Actually, the house I am moving into is owned by my sister and her partner and they have been living there for the past three years. They have really made the house beautiful (even more so) and it has a really happy and light feeling to the place (part of the reason I can't wait to move in.) I assumed there might be negative feelings... just because it is an old place (I don't really know that much about this sort of stuff... :P) but I guess, as they say, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it." :D
