Well, actually to build one.
How could I construct one myself?
Should it be Iron and not-else?
What should I do with it?
How should I use it?

and should we invest in a broom and an black robe .
eheh
but seriously i think a big black cauldron would be nothing more then a focus for your energies i.e. you wanted to make a potion you take out the cauldron letting the universe know you mean business. (i know nothing about the potions)
or perhaps for a scrying purpose. eh ?
aye scrying , you get a clear surface like a mirror,(usally the mirror had to be round and had a black trim in a book i read i lost it :O( but it was very detailed on to use the psychic mirror) or a body of water like filling up the cauldron with water and stare at it in a recptive matter and ask the universe to show you the future the present the past and the secrets. for example
one thing scrying in a pot sometimes they would put black ink or blue ink i think it was black ink to look in the water to give an aid so you don't see the reflections of your surrounding.
it would take a while to learn and to focus and to get good.
which is why the cystal bal was for, for scrying.
i am wondering what interested you in that was like a picture of it came to mind ?
i am sure you could get on constructed and for astetic is that the word ? it should be coal black.

What about trying to find one at a shambles market (if that thing exists in Bella Italia) or making one out of clay?

I'm with Catlin here, shambles markets is where I'd look. Might be tricy handling that melted iron and stuff in order to do one yourself... (hm...)
Like your water and flower idea though, would go nicely with black, heacy iron... (The image reminds me of the Buckland Romany Ace of Cups - it's called something else, but I can't recall it right now - that's a beautiful image!)

I also stumbled across ahp offering magickal supply but as they charged between 100 - 300 $ for an iron cauldron I did not bookmark this link. I think this is far too much for a pot.
Besides, it was not said if the cauldrons they offered were laquered or enamelled inside. If you keep water in a normal raw iron cauldron it will soon get pretty rusty and leak.
