Hi there :)
I'm an atheist, although I don't usually use that name much. As I understand it, an atheist is simply someone who doesn't believe in a supernatural being such as 'God' (or goddess, etc.)
I'm not quite sure what else you wanted to know?
Love and light,
FH

Atheism, is literally 'no deity' or 'against deity'. However a 'religion' has adopted the term, sort of, or else others have decided that all atheists are these people. These are atheists who are very involved in science. They believe in evolution and often the big bang theory. They're sort of a group, but obviously don't attend services and whatnot ;)
Many people wouldn't concider that an Atheist could also practice magic and divination etc. But we do. I'm one too.

Then again, you get people like me ... I'm a scientist, I believe in evolution (seen it working!) and think the big bang theory has a lot going for it... but I'm also a pagan, and talk to Goddess all the time.
Just to confuse you some more ;)

I am starting to think of myself as kind of an Atheist with Pagan overtones :P Or something... I think this place is influencing me in a good way but I am still not sure what I really *believe* I think it is more than just ~nothing~ but I also think evolution is an amazing thing. There has to be room in my mind and in the universe for both the scientific version of events and the spiritual version... Fitting it all in and making it work together is the hard part...

my understanding is that a theist believes that there is a god. an atheist, disbelieves that there is a god. and an agnostic doesn't claim to know either way.

I am undoubtedly Agnostic then... I suppose...

Hello...I'd like to add my two sence. I am definetly NOT an atheist, and I beleive in the big bang theory and any other scientific explination as to how the world was created...after all, it's only been proven by the greatest scientists. If I mis understood, please clarify...are you saying that it's either or? That one cant beleive in both? If so, I am living proof that you can. I read the greatest book of my life called The Spirits' Book written by Alan Kardec. He was a medium and all the info in the book are questions that we as humans want to know the answer to, and the answers are writted by the spirits of higher degree. This book bases all of it's information on the scientific side of the universe, and for any of you science fiends, trust me, it is the best book you'll ever read, not to mention, I'll put my life on it that after you get done reading it...you will STRONGLY BELIEVE IN GOD. Ive never been to big a fan of the old testement, because it had too many contridictions, and so I promise you that in this book you will find none. If you feel that there is no possible way you will ever beleive in God, please take the time to read this book. I guarantee you will have a very decisive change of heart.
Many Blessings,
Rain

I guess I'm the type of person who believes that God/dess created science and I strongy believe in evolution also. Funny, there is a current survey on iwon.com (I'm gonna win something one day!!) about if one can believe in God and also evolution. I say of course, 'cause I do.

I too believe in some sort of God/ess (although I prefer not to use the word God) AND in evolution, that the God/ess created science and evolution.

Rain:
Ah, I do know for certain that one can believe in both scientific explanation and biblical explanation for creation and evolution. For who else, in the Christian eye (and others it seems), would have created science but God? I once believed that God created the chosen people as it says he did in the bible (With the two and the garden) and the Gentiles came about through what we know as evolution. It still makes a lot of sense, for evolution is a provable theory (though it’s debatable how far that goes back with humans, there are missing links) That would describe why there ARE Gentiles in the first place. I was only saying that most Atheists, particularly the ones that fit the standard ‘Atheist’ mold, believe in human evolution and the big bang theory.
And concerning Agnosticism: I’ve come to the conclusion that there are two sorts of Agnostics. Active and passive. An Active Agnostic understand and admits that they do not know what they believe and are actively seeking answers and trying to form opinions. A Passive Agnostic neither knows nor cares and doesn’t want to discuss or learn anything either way. Passive Agnostics are annoying, Active Agnostics are what make the world interesting (they’re the ‘why?’ people).
