Grounding

Alright, since I've just learned about this i'm curious. How do you all see it and why do you use it, and perhaps a /short/ synopsis of your method?

jade  15 Jul 2002
it assists you in not getting too light headed or dizzy while performing different spiritual things......like meditating, healings and readings. you know when you finish reading and you are all 'spacey' that's cause you aren't grounded anymore.

in light,
jade

Diana  15 Jul 2002
I ground in order to disconnect with my ego, and to use the higher powers. Also, it makes the work so much more efficient. (Otherwise, like Jade says, one can get dizzy, or even feel a little ill.)

It can vary, depending on what I do, but generally it would involve protecting myself in light - sometimes a circle, sometimes a bubble, sometimes a tight band, the colour also changes sometimes - I go according to my intuition. Then once I have done the circle business, I often have to do some vertical work (depending on what I want to do), This means drawing in energy through my head chakra, down my spinal chord, into my feet and going pretty deep into the ground, and breathing in order to cleanse my energy. Automatically, my body changes its posture, and I can then physically sense when it has been done "correctly".

That's more or less it. (Sometimes I add a little prayer.)

Starfish  15 Jul 2002
I do the grounding exercises that I found at http://www.robinwood.com/LivingtreeGrove/Magic/MagicPages/GroundCenter.html

It works wonderfully and I feel so centered after I ground myself.

i use it in order to tap into the universal. it allows me to connect with the client when i do readings. it allows me to receive information from my spirit guides. i ground to let go of my ego. to become one with that which doesn't judge, with all that is.

i plant my feet firmly on the ground. then feel the energy and light enter into my head, go down through my body through my feet. i feel like i'm radiating light. my feet have become one with the ground and my head with the sky. i feel all this energy moving through me and all that is.

Sorceress_Jade  15 Jul 2002
I hadn't really contemplated it in terms of tapping into outer energy sources. It makes sense however. I've only just learned about this and am working on my thoughts about it.

At any rate, I've only grounded once so far (having learned about it like 2 days ago :) ) but I've never been able to read for myself before and I was able to for the first time that night.

Holmes tought me a method that worked well. A tree sort of thing, pushing roots down into the core of the earth and reaching and branching out into the cosmos.

The visualization came easy to me, and as I don't work with Chakras I didn't have all of that in my way. I remember Lightlike telling me about her monkey visualization and I thought that one was very cute.

I think a large part of what it did for me was to relax me, and as you all mentioned, let go of my own ego which was getting in the way of reading for myself. It was a very freeing feeling and I look forward to seeing how well it works on more readings

The first time I ever even heard the term "grounding", I was working in a restaraunt and I kept getting that vague" dizzy" feeling...does anyone know what I mean, as if you got out of bed too fast & the rest of the day is just...dizzy?

Anyway, a gal I worked with said that in drama class, whenever anyone felt like this, her teacher said to close your eyes and rub your hands over the wall, or the ground...basically, anything solid connected to the earth.

I have tried it and sometimes it works.

Anyway, not quite the type of suggestion you are searching for, I suspect, but there you have it.

zorya  15 Jul 2002
these methods aren't really for readings, but are for other kinds of grounding....

amyel,
when i get kind of "out there" lol, or have trouble focusing on the practical stuff, i do a similar kind of grounding. working in the dirt, like a garden can help ground you. so can eating root crops or going barefoot

much like what holmes taught sorceress jade, one of my favorite grounding methods is to connect with a tree. (it's healing too) i ask the tree's permission to stand with it. then lean with my back against it. then become one with the tree. i begin to feel the life forces flowing up throught the roots, (my feet), and down through the crown, (my head) i can actually feel a kind of vibration. sometimes when i open my eyes again, i can see the auras of the forest.

amyel  15 Jul 2002
Yes, I've heard of this "wood touch" connection, too. In fact, when you mentioned it, I seem to recall that this gal actually suggested touching wood, but often in a building, the ewalls are the only solid object actually "connected" to the ground. I seem to recall that she suggested "hugging" a tree if I was outside or could get outside.

Forgive me....my memory is faltering.....

jade  15 Jul 2002
grounding is very important when you are doing healings. it assists you in NOT taking on the clients negativity that you are attempting to assist them in removing! your grounding cords take the dis-ease or negativity into the earth to be recycled into postitive energy (composting)

the hermit  16 Jul 2002
Being a druidic mage as well as a hermit I do a 'tree' thing too.
Though I don't worship trees, I do respect them immensely.
I don't want to get too deeply into what I do and don't believe in particular, but I do believe that trees and other things have, for lack of a better word, spirits. As such, when I need to ground, I visualize a great old grandfather oak (don't exactly know why, but always felt it was a male spirit) that I knew as a youth...

I relax and see the old oak in my mind.
It's huge branches reaching up into the blue sky, it's roots sinking deep within the rich earth.
It's dark green canopy covers me and protects me.
I can feel it's joy of life, and also the sadness it has seen over the centuries.
I step close to it's mighty trunk and feel safe.
I reach out and touch it's hard bark and feel the power that pulses slowly through it's old veins.
It senses me and allows my fears and confusion to flow from me to it.
It allows me to tap it's energy and replenish mine.
It connects me back to the earth mother, washing me softly with her calming strength and giving me confidence to return to the battles of everyday life.
Eventually the tree gently pushes me back to here and now.
I thank the tree and the earth mother for once more sharing their soothing essence with me.
I’m grounded and renewed.

These are excellent suggestions and I have learned a lot reading them. I also use the Robin Wood exercise, plus another one that jade posted quite a while ago. I doubt I can find the post, and forgive me jade if I have changed it accidently. You can visualize a beam of light leaving your crown chakra. It shoots up to a star, wraps around the star a few times until it is secure. The light beam then travels back, through you and shoots down to the centre of the earth. It fastens itself securely there and comes back to you so the full connection is made. Just stand there for a few seconds and feel it.... you will feel *very* attached to the universe.
I took a "Working with the Media" course a few years ago, and they recommended that if you feel nervous before going on-camera (I have to speak for the department on TV occasionally) you should stamp your feet to feel the floor. I didn't know about grounding then, and they didn't use the term.

tigerlily  16 Jul 2002
I don't know if you can call this "grounding", as I "ground" into the wind... I need the open sky, and then I just close my eyes and lean into the wind. It brings me into the now and sweeps the dizziness out of my head . Afterwards, I feel grounded. When I don't have the opportunity to go outside, I just visualize the sky, the clouds, the light, the wind. Calms me immediately. Perhaps it depends on the element which you're closest to? Has anyone ever tried to ground with fire or water? (I do it with water sometimes, sitting beside a stream)?

Sulis  17 Jul 2002
I ground myself before any magical work and recently I`ve been grounding before readings, I think that it helps to connect me to Mother Earth and the Universe and stops me from feeling depleted of etheral energy, especially if I need to raise power.
I usually imagine that I have roots going deep into the earth, with every inspiration I draw up Earth energy through my base Chakra and draw in universal energy through my crown and solar plexus chakras. With every expired breath I let go of worries and negativity. When I feel as if I am filled with light I consider myself grounded.
At the end of magical work I eat something to close my chakras and ground myself again.

Blessings

magicmadrigal  17 Jul 2002
I'm lucky, I'm kinda naturally grounded. Probably because I'm a capricorn (old goat to some). I have noticed that it's usually harder for the non-earth signs to ground sometimes. For me I usually stand or sit and relax my shoulders first, and take very deep, cleansing breaths while I concentrate on the energy flow (or light) coming into my crown chakra and then into my head and neck, flowing down my spine, then down my legs and out through the souls of my feet. I imagine that energy traveling down into the earth, into the center core.

I like sitting and having that energy travel down my spine into the earth. I can actually feel myself being pulled down into the earth, like I'm sinking.

I use it before and after any energy work. Only before I envision the energy coming up from the core of the earth and traveling up and out the crown chakra. It's like sucking up earth energy to do the work then replenishing it and putting it back when I'm done.

lunar_rabbit  20 Jul 2002
I'm pretty naturally grounded, too. People always tell me I'm a calming influence on them -- especially magically. But I have found myself with that floaty, spacey feeling at times. This usually happens when I'm in a group of people who are very high energy, or if I am doing spiritual work. I'm very empathic, and sometimes forget to shield appropriately.

Here are my methods to ground. I find #2 the quickest... I find #3 the most effective for me personally, but I am weird in that I am very connected to water. (Odd for a Leo, I suppose!)

1) The tree method mentioned above -- feet grow roots and connect deeply within earth. Out of head grow branches which reach high to touch the sky's energies. Feel energy flowing from earth to sky and sky to earth, through your body.

2) What I call the "lasso" method as mentioned above -- I think this might be taught along with reiki? Out through your feet, there is a stream of white light that connects you to the center of the earth. Out through your head, you are connected with the center of the universe. Sometimes I prefer to use the moon, since I am "Lunar" by nature, and it's easier for me to visualize. The stream of light flows through your body in a straight line (down thru each chakra, if you are familiar with that concept). You feel the connection between the earth and moon, thru your body. It is like being plugged in.

3) My water method, which may be more of a relaxation thing than true grounding. I imagine myself on a raft in the middle of a lake or flowing river, with the sun beaming down on me. My feet are in the water, connecting me to the power of water. I am connected to the power of the sky by the wind and warmth of the sun. If you want the fourth element, the water can be shallow and you can feel the rocks at your feet. I often feel the power of the water flow through me, thru my feet, up each leg, into my torso, down each arm and up through my head. Like I'm breathing water almost.

All of these methods are to get energy flowing THROUGH you. The reason you get fuzzy headed is because you're trapping energy in your body. It's like inhaling without exhaling.

After doing a reading, or doing spiritual work or healing, you may feel a rush of energy. When you are grounded, you have an outlet to let go of this excess and simply feel refreshed. You let it drain back into Mother Earth, or out of your head back into the Universe.

Being so connected to water, another way that helps me when I'm "buzzed" from excess energy is to run my hands under cold water and feel the extraneous energy washed away.

Hope this helps, and isn't too redundant with the other posts. :-)

HOLMES  28 Jul 2002
the ground i do is this

find my star center which is a inch above my belly button and breathe it til i feel centered then i ground my center into the ground by picturing a root like i was taught in some books particualy ask your angels comes to mind.
picture the roots coming out of your feet and lower tailbone (where your root center is generlaly pointing down)
i do this til i connect to the molden core of the earth.
and then i breathe this red energy in making my body glow(from the roots and the core)
then i go up to each charka breathing in the color til my body fills up and glows , you know the score red, orange, yellow green blue , indigo and violet.
then out of my crown center i send roots up into the universal mind and let the light come down and purify, and balance all the chakras through my crown and all the way to my root and all the way through the roots into the earth. then i piciture like a cyndar of light around me ..
then i call light to me to breathe in. again til i glow and it radiates out of me making a big bubble of light which raises the vibration of all who enter the bubble.
i do this for i once learn to make a shield of light around me at before i do spiritual works
it was supposed to keep negative energies but it was also so thick that it blocked my energies in so much i was feeling smothered, angry , blocked off so i stoped
til i pick up this mediation book which explained it i forget the name of it but it was good and in the it expalin filling yourself up with light was much better then making a shield.
another book suggest a net , to let good things in but not bad things.
but i am don;t like being a net in real life so i couldn't visualize it

by now i am connected to the earth, and heavens, charkas balanced, and in a vibration rasing bubble of light radiating light .
what now ?

i call to myself my higher self (higher self is the highest aspects of your ego, your mind, that can connect to your true self your soul.)
and slowly merge with it becoming one with my higherself.

then i call my guide to myself and ask him to merge with me

then i call my soul to myself (that part of us which is out there doing other stuff which we reunite with when we sleep) and connect to him with my heart to his heart and the excerise is blending with your soul from the soul love book.
now i am ready to do energy work.

for readings i usally ground myself and raise up a bubble and picture roots going up into heavens to connect ot the universal mind.

one thing i do also when i call light to myself i glow brighter til i am silverly blueish whitiesh bright like in the movies then i activate the golden aspects not yellow like mental but golden white like spiritual light. and it adds to the silverly light on the out set let me expalin it further
a big golden egg with instead of yellow yolk a silvery white energy bright core .

Mlle Lenormand  28 Jul 2002
I ground myself very much the same as Holmes and Diana for readings and healings which works very well, but so far no one has mentioned to 'close off' at the end of these sessions.

After I have done healing or reading I mentally picture pulling my aura in close and disconnecting to the other person to ensure I don't take on their energies which can be positive or negative.
Once I neglected to do this and felt sick for days before I figured out where it came from.

I also thank any guides, entities etc for their help and guidance at this point.

Does anyone else do this?

Sorceress_Jade  28 Jul 2002
I've wondered sometimes about 'closing off' myself. But for me the grounding seems to wane after some time, particularly one i start to move around.

I should experiment with that, see what all it's about and what can be done. thnx for the mental poke. :)

Sorceress_Jade  31 Jul 2002
What things other than Tarot do you all use grounding for? I was working on a spell last night and realized today that it drained me. No, I have always been under the impression that my work is accomplished through will, however if I ground it would pull more energy from my surroundings.

I suppose that I could rationalize this as extra push, and not taking my will from the energy.

Anywho, thoughts, ideas...

HudsonGray  31 Jul 2002
There's a good explanation of it over at this URL under the basic skills section:

http://www.psipog.net/activepsy/contents.html

It does work & it's one of the basics of the Craft.

Sorceress_Jade  31 Jul 2002
Ayeeeeeeeeeeee. Thanx for the sight! I love it. ~prints out the whole damned thing to pour over later~
