reiki study group: ways to use reiki

I was once told (in another context than Reiki) that sending healing of any sort (emotional or physical) to someone who had not agreed to it consciously could mean that a) they didn't get the learning they needed from their situation b) you took their karma for their lost learning onto you c) they may actually be just where they may need to be and you are taking choice away from them. I would be interested to hear people's opinions on this - one of my reasons for raising it is that I have a relative who is ill with leukaemia at the moment, and who is very traditionally Christian-religious. She does have prayers said for her, but my sense is that anything else e.g. sending and/ or requesting reiki on her behalf would be an imposition. And yet I feel guilty at not doing more, even though I do know that she is probably drawing down all the spiritual help she would want and need. I just posted this in another thread: I always ask for permission before sending someone reiki. However, I do make an exception for situations where you can't ask the person involved for permission, for example small children or a person who is in a coma. In that case I "ask" whether it's ok to send reiki when I start sending it; I'm convinced that if this person doesn't want any reiki, I will feel this, and then I won't continue. In your situation I would send the reiki and ask whether it's ok.

Hi Aerin! I was asked by Jade to split the thread that this post originally appeared in, because it not only touches on Reiki, but on the Ethics of doing such thing without the recipient knowing, and the effect of karma. Hopefully splitting it in this way will allow others, who may not be interested in Reiki but in the subject bought up in this post, to answer aswell. My meditation teacher (she is also a Reiki master) said... When you send some healing to a person without his permission or consent but out of the goodness/compassion of your heart, you are recommended to add the following sentence in the message..."If "person's name" would prefer not to receive this healing, please let the healing energy go to someone that will need it and accept it." I think that is beautiful.

Thank you everyone, Kiama sorry I put this in an inapproriate place initially (I don't really like to start a thread if there's one there already). Jade is right, it does touch on a number of topics. The context I first heard this in was Huna, and it struck me as kind of 'right' for any kind of healing. I've never liked to hear/ see someone attempting to force anything on a person 'for their own good'. Roja, tarotlady the caveat sounds perfect as it ensures that I'm not imposing anything and also ensures any healing goes to someone else if it is unwanted. Aerin

asking that the healing go to the earth to heal Her illness and dis-ease is also another wonderful intention to have when sending a healing :D in light, jade :D
