Ridiculous question about Reiki...

...How do you pronounce it? I mean intonation, a friend of mine and I discussed it yesterday, she put emphasis on the first syllable and I put emphasis on the last... And I've heard both ways before too, so... Which is it..?

Not that it matters, but being a linguist, I just need to know!

I think the first accent is on the "e", and the second on ther last "i". RE'-I-KI'
At least in Italy that's the way it is pronounced. :P

I was about to become a linguist... but medicine overtook me.

I put the emphasis on the first syllable. That's how it's usually pronounced over here, I don't think I've heard anyone pronounce it with the emphasis on the last syllable.

The MAIN accent is on the first...
I am sorry, I wrote FIRST instead of MAIN... :P
Main accent on the "e" or RE.

(I wrote that because in my basic basic basic basic basic basic basic basic basic linguistic studies I was taught that in English you have the Main and the Second Accent, or something named similarily. Now that I have the possibility, I'd be curios to know - from Jenny-li too - if that really exists in real life or it's something silly they made up... Anyway, it is something you are supposed to find in Italian-English dictionaries... Maybe there is something true behind it... *LOL* :))

*Violet still trying to get the following rule: *

"I" before "E" except after "C",
and sounds like "AY" as in "Neighbor" and 'Weigh',
and Weekends and holidays and all throughout May.....

hmmmm, i don't know about all that linguistic stuff. wish i did. i love languages! everyone i know around here emphasizes the latter part of the word. "ray-KEY". but i don't even know the right way to pronounce tarot! I say "tear-o", but I know I've heart people pronounce it "tarrot" like carrot, and "tarow"
like "to row".

NOW we're talking, finally someone who agrees with ME...! :D *lol* :D

About Tarot-pronounciation, being non-English-speaking I have the convenience of just picking the French version here: "Ta-ro", emphasis on the -o... Guess that's pretty handy at times...!

Thanks for all your input, I can't wait to see what my Master will have to say about it...!

I drew my own conclusion not from any knowledge in Reiki, but from my 4-month study-tour to Japan - and we did not discuss Reiki there! I did take Japanese classes though, and ray-KEY *feels* more Japanese...! But I dunno... Thanks all!

Jenny :)

I suppose the pronounciation would also be influenced by your native language; the pronounciation of words imported from another language is often adjusted to the local language, based on local pronounciation rules.

I noticed this when I was studying Arabic: many Arabic words are used unchanged in both Dutch and English, but the pronounciation may be different. Another aspect is transcription: because Arabic has its own alphabet, the words need to be transcribed to the Latin alphabet, and Dutch and English each have their own standardized transcription method, which explains both different pronounciations and different spellings of the same word.

Hmmm guess my pronunciation as reeky is wrong then lol

:THP

jade  26 Jul 2002
heehee i've heard them all :D

i say ray-KEY and i also say tarrow with the 'o' being the strong point.

in light,
