From "Earth Prayers From Around the World"
edited by Elizabeth Roberts & Elias Amidon

...
When we get out of the the glass bottles of our ego,
and when we escape like squirrels turning in the
cages of our personality
and get into the forests again,
we shall shiver with cold and fright
but things will happen to us
so that we don't know ourselves.

Cool, unlying life will rush in,
and passion will make our bodies taut with power,
we shall stamp our feet with new power
and old things will fall down,
we shall laugh, and institutions will curl up like
burnt paper.

D.H. Lawrence

...
Awakening
in a moment of peace
I give thanks
to the source of all peace

as I set forth
into the day
the birds sing
with new voices
and I listen
with new ears
and give thanks

nearby
the flower called Angel's Trumpet
blows
in the breeze
and I give thanks

my feet touch the grass
still wet with dew
and I give thanks
both to my mother earth
for sustaining my steps
and to the seas
cycling once again
to bring forth new life

the dewdrops
become jewelled
with the morning's sun-fire
and I give thanks

you can see forever
when the vision is clear
in this moment
each moment
I give thanks.

That first poem really hit me right in the core. I look at the wilderness there as both literal and metaphorical. My own spiritual life could use a few more primal experiences like that these days :)

Sometimes D.H. Lawrence can seem deeply mystical with such a passion that really stirs the soul. I'm going to hit print and keep it.
Thanks.

Thanks for the poetry Napaea - it really makes one think. I'm also going to print this off to keep.

Ah Power that swirls us together
Grant us Bliss
Grant us the great release
And to all Beings
Vanishing, wounded
In trouble on earth
We pass on this love
May their numbers increase.

O sacred season of Autumn, be my teacher,
for I wish to learn the virtue of contentment.
As I gaze upon your full-colored beauty,
I sense all about you
an at-homeness with your amber riches.

You are the season of retirement,
of full barns and harvested fields.
The cycle of growth has ceased,
and the busy work of giving life
is now completed.
I sense in you no regrets:
you've lived a full life.

I live in a society that is ever-restless,
always eager for more mountains to climb,
seeking happiness through more and more possessions.
As a child of my culture,
I am seldom truly at peace with what I have.
Teach me to take stock of what I have given and received,
may I know that it's enough,
that my striving can cease
in the abundance of God's grace.
May I know the contentment
that allows the totality of my energies
to come to full flower.

May I know that like you I am rich beyond measure.

As you, O Autumn, take pleasure in your great bounty,
let me also take delight
in the abundance of the simple things in life
which are the true source of joy.
With the golden glow of peaceful contentment
may I truly appreciate this autumn day.

Oh, Napaea!
The poetry is beautiful. And ever so inspiring!
I've always envied poets. The ability of poets to present the written word in it's intrinsic purity as vector of idea truly amazes me. I can write prose, but the art of poetry seems to constantly elude me.

the fortress:

I sit at the window and watch the world go by
and wonder at its beauty
so far away
so unattainable.
So many people living their lives
while I stand by and watch them
getting married
growing old.
But I have chosen this life of solitude.
I have made my own fortress.
Can I now
after all this time
pull it down?

-------------------------------------------------------------

the depth

"Don't go inside!" the voice cried out to
someone standing near.
"It's far too dark inside of there.
You'll lose your way, I fear".
And so the other stopped himself
when he had come so close.
And on that day, he turned away,
THE DEPTH to never know.
For THE DEPTH is black, and deep, and dark,
or so I have been told -
and in its belly lies THE VOID
whose walls are bleak and cold.
And in THE VOID is NOTHINGNESS,
so still...so mystifying,
that no one dare enter in that cave
for fear they'd soon be dying.

But is there really danger
in this place where none abide?
And if none go in, how can it be
they call it "THE DARK SIDE"?
For who would know how dark it is
unless they looked within?
THE DEPTH could not be measured
without someon stepping in.
But man must know where not to go,
I guess instinctively.
THE DEPTH goes on unexplored.
I know...
because it's me.

Although they have tightly bound my arms and legs,
All over the mountain I hear the song of birds,
And the forest is filled
with the perfume of spring-flowers.
Who can prevent me from freely enjoying these,
Which take from the long journey
a little of its loneliness?
