I remember references to a healing bowl in other posts, and I was curious about the whole concept . This is separate, I think from the signing/healing crystal bowls currently being discussed in another thread.
I wanted to know what the uses & purposes of the healing bowl are, where the concept came from, and if there is a preferred material or shape used.
Any information on this lovely idea would be welcome!
Thanks,
Tarotphelia

i work with a healing bowl. it is not of the singing type;) mine is quiet.
it is something a friend of mine posted about on our mailinglist a long time ago.
it is very basic and i picked up the habit since i am interested in herbs.
what i do is i have a nice cheramic bowl that i filled with dried herbs (homegrown), around the rim of the bowl i put a few drops of a healing oil (also homemade) i put the bowl in either a circle of salt or on top of my pentagram.
into this bowl i put tiny slips of paper upon which i have written names of people or myself and a short request, like
for example: "jema is free from the flu"
i fold these up and seal them with the oil and put them among the herbs into the bowl, light a candle and some incense and leave it there, when the candle has gone out and send a thanks out and leave the notes in the bowl until i don't need them there anymore.
i change herbs and clean out the bowl and burn the notes on every major holiday.

Hi Tarotphelia!
I've seen both the metal AND the glass healing/singing bowls. The metal ones tend to be a lot smaller, but we've used the larger glass ones in public rituals, and they produce an amazing sound. I've seen the metal ones for sale in Tibetan shops. The crystal ones were sold by a friend of mine, but her store closed. I think they were made locally, as we have SO many glass blowers and various artisans here in the Western MA area.
As I mentioned, we use them in ritual work. I've used the smaller metal ones to induce calm, and a sort of trance state for the same.

Jema has explained beautifully the type of bowl I was thinking about! Perhaps I will look for a nice quiet wooden bowl- wood is so natural & warm. I love the idea of putting herbs in. Kind of nice & sneaky too- if people come over they will not see your slips of paper & read them!
I have seen this same concept in books in the form of a "wish box" or something similar. Sort of a way to focus on intentions & interact with the cosmos by releasing your concerns to a higher force.
Thanks for all the replies!

yeah!
it is a really simple and beautiful way to use herbs in ritual and healing.
you can build a ritual around it or just let the herbs and the oils do their job.
i found the recepie for the healing oil in Cunninghams book about oil and incense.
i guess one could put petitions for other things in there too and just change the herbs and oils accordingly. like a prosperity bowl!
or a divination bowl:)
