a reiki master/teacher must attune you, either hands on or by distant attunement.
this opens you up to the vibration of the reiki energy and then you can channel the energy when you have the intention.
your intuition also grows and you begin to live the principles........it's a way of life really.
and you can take it as far as you wish. you can choose not to live your principles or increase your intuition, and just focus on healing.
it's your choice.
by the way, i am a master/teacher ;)

ps there was already a thread on our veins of reiki.

synchronicity!
just today when i went out for shop for some things i read the posterboard by the doors to the store and found a notice on a course in reiki by a reiki master here in my tiny town!
i still haven't decided to give him a call though. i am poor right now and don't think i can afford the course. but at least now i know there is someone there to teach me later on - when i am back on my feet again.

Hi Jema
although this is a tarot site it seems you have on hand a huge resource if you need help and/or advice about reiki, and one of the beautiful things about reiki is that we all love sharing our ideas, healing, suggestions etc.
B well, and you will come to reiki when it is right for you.

Hmm... Color me skeptical. Does the reiki master typically charge for this service?

Hi Baneemy
Most do charge, but a friend gave me Reiki 1 as a birthday pres. My fiance gave me 2 and 3 (master/teacher). So I'm one of the rare people that got if for no financial cost......but pay for it in doing as much as I can with the abilities it gives.
The most respected reiki master I know gives both treatments and attunements for whatever people can afford, and that includes nothing. He wont see people miss out on it just cos they don't have a penny to their name.
As I understand it, it's about exchanging energies.....with friends I either give it free or exchange for something from them (eg an indian head massage). Other people I charge for treatments or attunements. That's for my time and the teaching that goes with it.
I do tarot and reiki, and favour neither of them....both are tremendous sources of guidance and healing........but I dont charge someone for doing a reading. But many 'readers' do. I know healers that charge and some that don't. And if I step outside the NHS and do some private stroke rehab work it costs £50 for an hours session.
Hope that gives it a little perspective and doesn't sound like a rant.....didn't mean it to be....ahem. lol
If you are sceptical, check out stamford university's site, they did research on energy healing and looked at the different frequencies at which different healing styles operate. They haven't worked out yet how come it isn't possible to use the reiki frequency without attunements. They also haven't worked out hw we can send it over distances either, lol.

Hi Dhaofollower
I'll have to check out the Stamford study; that sounds interesting. For me, the claim that you can get the power only from a master is a major red flag... but I'm openminded. I know very little about reiki, so I don't want to jump to any unwarranted conclusions.

I was very skeptical myself at first, I didn't really know what to think of reiki and I really wondered how an attunement could give you that power.
I still can't explain it, I only know it works... :) Especially after having received my reiki II attunement, I could immediately feel the difference, I could feel how the "power" had become stronger than before.
Maybe you should try a reiki treatment, just to see and feel how it works. ;)

Another Usui here!
I just received my Reiki I, and there was a distinct difference in the energy before, and after. I am going to be receiving my II in May or June, and my III in August or September.
My sensai is not charging me very much. There are reputable people who do adjusted fee based on financial need. What I was told about charging for Reiki: Dr Usui began by teaching and attuning people totally for free. He discovered that students were taking it for granted, and not appreciating it. He learned that people were more dedicated and serious about it if they paid something for the training. It became more valuable to them, and therefore, they appreciated it more. However, there is no need to be greedy and overcharge for this. That happens sometimes. But any ethical sensai will teach someone for free if they really couldn't afford it.
So it isn't charging for the attunement, it's like a University degree. They charge for that, don't they!
The attunements come at the end of the reiki course. It's like passing your exam. The reason the attunements are transferred, at least to my understanding, is that it's easier to open the student up to the energy, and it's a passing on of a heritage, teacher to student, and so on.
Dr Usui sat on a mountainside for 21 days and meditated. This is where he got attuned to reiki energy. Not all of us have the luxury of meditating on a beautiful mountain in Japan for 21 days!
So we get attuned by our sensai :)
(Sensai means "Teacher/Mentor" in Japanese.)

im becoming more and more interested in reiki the more i learn about it..an first i too was skeptical about it, but then i saw my aunt use the 'energy' and was completely amazed with it.
i must admit, i am still very ignorant and don't know a hole lot about it, but im hopeing that will change very soon!

A lot of reiki masters work full time in the field. While they may feel as altruistic as any of us, they still need to eat....

I did my reiki attunement this weekend, and it was really strange, I could feel heat or cold in my hands, and feel energy... I was a bit skeptical, but it paid off (I paid 75 euros for it, it wasn't much compared to some here in lisbon).
now I'm planing to do my reiki II in june or september...
