Came across this great quote today from a guy called
Omar Khayyam, who live in the middel ages and thought Iwould share it with you.
I sent my soul through the invisible,
Some letter of the afterlife to spell.
And by and by my soul returned to me and answered,
I myself am heaven and hell.
Would appreciate your thoughts on the quote.
Blessed be,
joe

Being a reformed librarian ( ;) )I've heard of Omar Khayyam but not read much of his work. This quote is lovely though, and to me it speaks of the potentiality we all hold within ourselves to create the life of our choosing.
We are writing our own script to our own Lila -- whether it's a life of heaven or hell is decided not only externally, but within.
Thank you for sharing!

Thank you for sharing this Musicman it is thought provoking. I believe our heaven and hell are here inside us and in how we live our physical lives.

I like that, musicman!
I agree with the other opinions on heaven and hell being inside us. I also like the idea of communicating with our own souls...interesting notion. What would my soul say if I sent it out in search of the afterlife? What would yours say?
Also, I won't pass up any chance to tell people about a site I learned about right here on Aeclectic: http://www.sacred-texts.com. They have texts from just about every religion I've ever heard of. Basically, they just let the texts spead for themselves, which I like alot. You can find the entire text of the Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam here. (That's where your quote is from, musicman!)
Peace,
Melvis

Another possible take on the quote is that no matter where you go, who you associate with, the one thing you always have to live with is you. Even if you move to your dream locale, in your dream house, with your dream friends, if you're a "negative" person or you don't like yourself, you probably won't be happy, perhaps even feeling that you are "in hell". Similarly, even if you don't like where you're living and don't have many friends, if you're a positive, hopeful person with good self-esteem, you can still be happy, maybe (if you're positive enough ;)) even in your own personal heaven.
You're the only person you can never get away from - good incentive to learn to love yourself :)
Sorry if none of this made any sense ... I think I'm spouting gibberish by this time of the night (or morning, rather)...
