Aura photography fraud?

I have seen this done rather expensively at metaphysical fairs: The person being photographed puts their hands on a special board or plate, and the photographer takes their picture with a camera. The result is a blurred silhouette of the person with an "aura" of different colors.

The folks at a local alternative magazine asked a scientist to observe as they had their "aura photos" taken. The scientist said that the special board was actually a liquid crystal board. The same thing can be found at some science museums -- when you place your hand on the board, your body heat leaves different colors. Dark blue is the area of greatest heat, then there's green, and yellow...Mood rings also work on this principle.

Anyhow, the colors on the board are superimposed, either digitally or by double-exposure, on the underlit photo of the subject, and voila! An "aura."

They found they could predict the colors that would show up in their pictures -- if they heated up their hands by rubbing them together vigorously, they would get a lot of the deep blue color, and a person with very cold hands ended up with a greener glow.

All of them had the same basic color scheme -- no pinks or silvers or violets. The colors were the same ones found on liquid crystal boards with no variation. Of course, they were all unique, as everyone's body temperature varies.

I just wondered if anyone ever heard of this, and if anyone else had heard of a scientific explanation of this as fraud. It sounds darn convincing as a hoax to me.

I like to keep an open mind, but not a gullible mind. There may be a way to see auras, but it sounds like it sure isn't this way.

Any other thoughts?

Kyrielle: a book I took out once from the library spoke about this method you mention. I don't remember details, but I remember that it is not the aura that is being photographed, because the aura is being created by electronic means. The aura is created by the apparatus.

I don't know. I have heard of ways to photograph auras, and in a scientific lab. What it sounds like is they are doing a cheap imitation. Not necessarily a hoax, but not good science.

I saw a looong time ago a guy do aura photgraphy on the talk show The Oher Half, and their pictures had violet in them so it sounds like this one ios a cheap rip off, but their may be a more legit way of doing it. If i remember correctly they didnt have to touch any board, but perhaps they were taken backstage i dont quite remember

some years ago there were some "scientists" who were photographing "auras" at various fairs.

what they were using was an early digital camera using a combination of infrared (IR) and ultraviolet (UV) techniques that filtered the image of the person through the IR and UV elements before exposing it to the film negative. the result was an "aura" based on light from above and below the normal human visual range.

variations of this methodology continue to crop up now and again with various claims attached about what one "sees" in the film images. the scientist is correct in this case, what Kyrielle is describing is one such variation.

as far as i have seen, all such “aura” photography is based on this or similar techniques and thus, in my mind, is not showing any “psychic” phenomena.

This weekend was a fair where you could have your aura photographed and you had to put your hands on a plate. Last year someone else did this, and their 'instruments' didn't require any touching of plates, they simply took your picture (whole body).

I do not believe that these photographies are 'real' in the sense that they are able to portray your aura. One girl I know, had her 'picture taken', then she went out and drank alchohol. She returned after a while and had a new picture taken, and there were several changes in this image... So, I don't buy it.

Should you find yourself at a fair, go to have your aura photo taken. When they are about ready to take your photo, lean to the right or left...really lean.

They may (if truely fraudulent):

1) not take the picture until you are in the pre-exposed 'aura frame'.

2) take the picture and refuse to give it to you because it did not turn out.

*lol*
Umbrae, I should have known this while the fair still was here!
However, I'm not sure I'm interested in paying a lot of money to do this...

I paid 25 to have my aura pic taken at a pshyic fair......at the time I bought the stuff the guy was telling about my pic..I mean it fit me.....2 sprits on each side of me (my grandma is one I like to think), one dominate one at my head, my gaurdin. Orange sun shaped circle above me, meant knowledge and strenght from above. Green at the bottom, meant I am connected with nautre. Orange at the bottom meant I was a teacher or instuctor...I work in pharmacy, i inform about medications?....But after reading these threads now I have doubt.

Sylvia Browne says if u "see aura's you should have your eyes checked, if u hear voices you need to be on medication."

where does slvia say that ? *holmes ask while tapping his hands like mr burns*

They've got people taking aura photographs at psychic fairs here too, for $35 a shot. No touching hands to anything, they just sit you down in front of a screen & take it.

Whether it works or not, I don't really care, since I figure it's useless anyway. If it isn't real, you're out $35. If it is real, the picture only applies to that second that you were sitting there getting your picture taken--what use is it to you? Yes, you have energy shooting off your head or funny blobs floating in front, but so what? Is that any info you can actually USE?

I figured it was a waste of good money I could better spend on something important, or at least some 'treat' that I really would appreciate.

I used to work at a metaphysical shop where they had an aura camera. It was a digital camera attached to a computer with a certain software program.
The plate you put your hand on wasn't liquid crystal, it was stainless steel & copper. The aura they are measuring is actually the electromagnetic field that we (and everything else) has. The camera's software translates EMF frequencies into colors so we can "see" it (lower freq. = red, higher = blue). There is nothing psychic about it.
I've had it done several times, and I can make my aura change color to what I want it to be! (the camera operator has no idea).
And yes, your aura changes from minute to minute. If you come back an hour later and have it done, it will look different. The shop has several pictures up, of before doing reiki or meditating, and after, and the aura is always much larger and in the green/blue/violet shades.
My son (age 11) wanted one done. He is very hyperactive, and doesn't sit very still. You can see the person in the monitor of the camera, and his aura was flashing and moving like crazy. They finally found a second of my son being still and shot him (with the camera of course! :) )
However, I will say this: the last time I had one done, it showed a very dark spot on the left (receiving) side. I discovered later that someone was sending me very negative energy.
Hope that clears some of it up,

The photo student chimes in late, as usual:

What they were doing is called Kirlian photography. Check the links below if you'd like to know more.

Hope they're informative. I didn't check to see if any were broken.
