In a used bookstore on Saturday, I found an unopened "Zen Garden".... basically a black wooden box with white sand, rocks and a rake accompanied by a little red book full of helpful zen statements. Its meant to be a tool for meditation, a portable little Zen garden and I love it! I've wanted one for a while, even passed up the opportunity to buy a brand spanking new Cosmic Tribe tarot at half price to get this instead.
Any one else out there have a zen garden, portable or the real thing? :)

i have one just like yours that a special friend gave me years ago.
it has followed me around thru ups and downs, good jobs and bad, and provided me with a relaxing focus on many occasions. it currently sits beside my little rock water fall on a bookshelf in my cave. i still enjoy "gardening" in it, though the book "disappeared" some years ago. i hope it's found a home with someone else who finds it useful.
for anyone interested, i just looked and they're still available...

What is a zen garden actually? I've seen them at the Botanical Gardens, but no one has really explained them to me

part of the zen philosophy is tranquility through meditation and order, learning to "go with the flow" so to speak.
by taking time away from busy life to contemplate the structure of the garden, plan it, arrange it harmoniously you thus bring more calm into your life.
you place the rocks and various other pieces (in larger gardens) so as to display a tranquil scene. you rake the sand or gravel into flowing patterns that complement the rocks or accentuate them according to your goal.
by thinking only of the garden, it’s structure, it’s pattern, you leave behind the more stressful parts of your life... at least for a little while... as you become one with the garden.
