Crowley & Yoga

ok ..... any experts on Alister Crowley????? i don't know any of his work - i know his reputation - but i do not judge him on this. i am more into yoga anyway! on ebay ... i came accross a book of 8 lectures by him - on yoga. i had a look at them on the web - he seems to pick yoga to pieces. i am no intellectual ... and find it hard to get my head around large complex essays. does anyone have any knowledge or opinion of this. was he a yogi as well as a magician!? http://www.deoxy.org/annex/8yoga0.htm

I've read the first of these eight lectures. It's not about yoga. I would not call him a yogi, for all he seems to do is take the *word* yoga (he doesn't even mention the practice it entails, or at least, he hasn't yet) and drags it into his hobby-horse argument about union with everything. Quote: It is therefore incumbent upon us, if we wish to make the universal and final Yoga with the Absolute, to master every element of our being, to protect it against all civil and external war, to intensify every faculty to the utmost, to train outselves in knowledge and power to the utmost; so that at the proper moment we may be in perfect condition to fling ourselves up into the furnace of ecstasy which flames from the abyss of annihilation. He is a strange and scary man. I'll just go back to practicing yoga, if it's all the same to you.

Pompous, much? That extract sounds like a speech from a baddy out of an old and creaking Hammer Horror movie. Or else the tag line from the end of 'Just a Minute' when Humphrey L. is finishing the show. (UK Radio 4 show) Aerin

When I read Crowley's works, I always have to read it through a few times just to take it in (ie understand it :D ) - Umm I'll just go back and read that a few more times lol
