Music. Vibrations. Energy.
I've been thinking about this subject a lot for the past few years and lately it's tickling at the back of my mind again, so I thought to post about it to get others' thoughts as well.
Long ago, I remember watching a segment on a TV show ("Sightings") where they discussed the healing effects of music, specifically people who took up playing the harp to deal with chronic illness, pain, and other dibilitating conditions. Of course, all interviewed had glowing things to say about the path.
The theory was the vibrations from the harp raised one's own personal vibratory levels to a point where they could begin to heal themselves.
But what tickles my fancy is this : I've long been a devotee of the theory that working with music (especially a prolonged lifework, like a musician, singer, dancer, etc.) can raise one's vibratory levels and help them to become more in tune psychically.
Beyond the standard, "Music makes me feel good," or "Music helps to calm me," stuff ... I'm talking about changing your way of perceiving and feeling vibrations. Which, in effect, raises one's own chakra/energy levels, and even opens them (perhaps unintentionally fory one not trained in meditation).
To those Aeclecticians out there (and firemaiden I've wanted to ask you about this point-blank for at least a month or more), what do you think? Do you feel the vibrational work you do in your music carries over into your ability to feel psychic energy/vibrations? If so, how?
(endlessly curious Alissa)

Ancient Teachings for Beginners they talk about how music can and has been used to raise the vibrations in your surroundings. The author mentioned how music and the use of candles can be used to not only raise your spiritual vibration, open chakra, and allow spirit guides access, but can effect the enviornment you are in and the people who enter it. Have you noticed the "feeling" in most churches is different this is supposedly due to this effect.

This is soooo interesting that you bring this up Alissa. :)
I have, just within the last week, decided I would like some sort of CD set to use in my massage practice - CD's that use different music (not chakra toning) to raise/change vibrations.
I want a set (not just one CD) that I can play during my massages to add an extra vibrational dimension for my clients.
So if anyone has any ideas I'd really appreciate it. A lady I knew years ago had something similar to what I'm thinking about but of course I've lost touch with her and can't remember anything about the set other than it existed. LOL

My dear Allibee, I will have to think about this.
You know, I don't know enough about the subject about vibratory levels. But there certainly is something powerfully healing about (some kinds of) music.
I respond very viscerally to music, live music, that is. There is nothing like hearing a live symphony orchestra play -- a recording can never match it.
Music communicates the intentions and experiences of the composer. Sometimes a composer writes from beyond the veil. One might immediately think of the Mozart Requiem, but I am actually thinking about Messaien. Messaien wrote Eclairs sur l'au-delà while dying. It means - "flashes of light on the Beyond".
I had the privilege to attend a concert of Eclairs sur l'au-delà in Berkeley, conducted by Kent Nagano, performed just after Messaien's death. I was in tears for nearly the entire piece. I am not sure I even liked the music, but it didn't matter, it was music that transcended the medium of music, and gave you an experience, -- of precisely what the composer meant -- an experience of flashes from beyond the veil
I was embarrassed by my tears as the lights came up, but then I looked around the house, and saw every single person in the sold out audience was also in tears.
Just my preliminary thoughts Alissa, I will have to ponder this at greater length. There is much, much to say. Thank you for starting such an interesting thread!

Faunabay, here is a link to a wonderful website devoted to healing sound. I bought Andrew Weil's CD, "Sound Body/Sound Mind" and use it all the time when I do Jin Shin Jyutsu (a Japanese form of bodywork), and during meditation.

I have a CD by Steve Halpern called Chakra Suite with frequencies designed toheal each of the chakras. Certain parts of the music tickle my chakras like a xylophone. I can definitely feel it at an energy level.
Whether it's Vivaldi, Mozart, or even the Beach Boys I've always chosen music to effect my energy.

Morning,
i found this when i needed it the most. i'm exhausted from my course load this term in MASSAGE THERAPY! i use the same cd for most of my practice time because it helps raise my energy and intuition. some practice clients can also feel the energy in the room and coming from me. so i was going to post a thread about some way of raising my energy and to help rid me of my intellectual fogginess. i'm trying to study for another MIDTERM (UGH!). i know it's partly due to my menses coming any day but i feel really weird. so i'm playing the cd i have a connection w/to help me raise energy.
any other ideas beside coffee which isn't working? water already pounding! going outside at lunch to study! finally the perfect spring day! at least we'll have one before summer starts. can anyone feel anything intuitively that i might be missing?
a classmate of mine is going to send me a music house w/cd sets especially for massage therapy. i'll post for everyone once i get it. because music is definitely a way into a person energy field without being invasive and it's respectful to both giver and receiver. plus i love listening to it when i do homework or studying.
peace to all.

That is very special. I've listened to a good bit of Messian but never like that. The "Quartet for the End of Time" always envoked thrones and angels for me.
I agree wholeheartedly that symphonic music can be the most compelling of all. The live experience is wonderful with the right orchestra and music. I have been doing more work with string quartets and that has been very special as well. If you ever have the chance to get to Prague, check out the Tallich Quartet. Those guys are magnificient!

Since starting this thread, I haven't found a chance to post how I interact with music, and its vibrations.
I eat music. I use that term a lot-- I injest it into me.
When I sing, and bring myself up to full voice, I love the feeling I get in my 3rd and 4th chakras from the vibration of my voice. The 5th chakra is surely stimulated as well, but I feel it most lower down. The belly goes soft, I breathe deeply through my diaphram ... sound like meditation anyone? I can belt out a couple tunes on days when I feel badly (go outside and sing to the trees), and energetically I feel a pick-me-up. A booster shot. Nothing abnormal, but when I feel down ... I often sing if I'm trying to get out of it.
In the car, I am almost always singing.
When I dance, it's different. On a good dance day, it feels like the music goes through me when I'm dancing (like a violin, the music comes from inside out, manifesting in movement). I don't even control myself, the music drives the physical vehicle for me. I find this especially true when improving (no choreography to remember = even less analytical thought).
I leave and I'm on air. I feel like I haven't even had a class sometimes, not tired -- even though my body's exhausted, I'm filled with energy.
On a bad dance day, I'm just fighting with the music ... trying to keep the tempo, not fall behind or arrive too soon for my steps. The music pushes at me, pushes me around. I feel inadequate to injest it at those points. Then it goes down lumpy and hard to swallow.
And then I *don't* leave with the post-dance euphoria at all, but oh well. (Maybe next class.)

That makes sense Alissa. I am not that attuned to what chakra is which, but today, working with my coach to get the full length of the voice open, and singing Lady Macbeth for an hour and a half, I felt like my entire body was participating in the sound. A little bit like flying. Exhilarating, but also very, very, very taxing. I felt like I had swum accross a lake and back afterwards.

Oh I bet~!!!! You have had a workout alright!!
Your 3rd chakra is your power chakra, and it's the solar plexus. When you're using your diaphram for your singing, you're "in" your 3rd chakra, stimulating it. The belly is soft when you sing because it allows the maximum amount of air, and that also helps the 3rd chakra, I think.
The 4th chakra is the heart chakra. The lungs, as they vibrate with air and act as a drum cavity for the sounds you create, gently stimulate this chakra as well, the Love/Compassion chakra.
Of COURSE the 5th chakra, the Throat chakra, is stimulated by the mere act of vocalization. And when you use your vibrato, I imagine that would do it too.
WOWOWOWOW ... how cool to sing that, eh??? ;) I'm so jealous. I bet you were so high!!! Excellent!

yes that's right, I listen to Heavymetal music to go to sleep to and wake up with the soothing sounds of Miles Davis. When I'm angry metal music helps to let all my emotions out thus soothing me to calmness while when I'm sad cool jazz or balladry music cheers me up particularly any song about 'lost love', 'requinted love' or any sloppy love song...

i agree with you Musicman .... I like Heavy Metal, love ballads (and also ambient)
music is in the soul - that is why we all have diverse preferences
