Songs telling you something?

Do you sometimes find yourself singing or humming the weirdest songs, and then realise that the title and/or lyrics of the song make a lot of sense to you at that time?

I sometimes find myself with a song in my head that I don't even like or that I haven't heard for ages and I wonder why it suddenly pops up. And then I realise the lyrics make sense... Not always, but often.

I remember once when I was constantly worrying about something and I suddenly found myself singing "Que sera, sera, whatever will be, will be". Now that's definitely not the kind of song I usually have in my CD player ;), but it felt like it was telling me something at the time: stop worrying, "que sera, sera".

The most striking example was when at one time I kept playing the Live song "Nobody Knows" over and over and over again, for no clear reason. The lyrics of the song's first verse are:

i was on a street
with a common name
i prayed for love
yeah i even begged
i had a vision of you
that carried me through

At the time, I felt rather lonely and was very much in need of someone cheering me up. Then at night, I had this sudden vision of a man. The next day, I went into a shop to buy some stuff; the shop happend to be in a street with a very common name ;). The shop owner was very nice, we had a long chat, he gave me a great discount on the stuff I bought, and he really cheered me up. After which I realised he was the guy from the vision I had the night before. And the whole thing fitted in with the lyrics of the song I had been playing for the last few days...

Does anyone else have this sometimes? Or is it just me being silly... ;)

I don't think it's odd. Maybe it makes a lot of sense....!

I have a huge collection of books and every now and then I go there and pick out whatever strikes my fancy. One day, I picked out 4 random novels that were totally unrelated in style. I had no idea why I felt like reading them, some I didn't even care for and was planning to donate. Well, the next day I woke up and realized that each book had an incident of resurrecting someone/thing and it had gone badly. It was such an important lesson for me at the time to learn that it is always always always a bad idea to try to bring back something that's dead if your purpose is to make it have the same role it had before (which is different than having it resurrect differently, like human to god etc).

Isthmus, I don't suppose one of the books was Pet Sematary by Stephen King?

To get back to the songs, I often find my brain "playing" a tune over and over. One day it was "Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head." At some point I usually catch myself and stop and say to myself "Please stop doing that!"

But you know, I haven't ever thought very hard about whether the songs mean something...I will from now on! :)

Tarotlady, this happens to me all the time. Im almost always with a song in my head, with is not strange since im listening to music constantly.
What i remember more clearly like the thing you have described is one day that i was feeling really bad (love hurts...) Then a phrase of a Queen's song started to resonate in my brain:
"Show must go on, inside my heart is breaking,my make-up may be flaking, but my smile still stays on"

Anyways, is also usual in me to start singing something when i hear a word that reminds me one song, and this happens often. Is like if something press a key inside of me. Sometimes my friends are little surprised about this habit, so what i do is to sing it on my head...

OH how many times, I cannot count.....I hear a song, don't recall the lyrics, but I'm taken in by the song as a whole. I go out & buy the CD....AH....the lyrics, even those I hear for the first time are insperational, spiritual & so in tune ( no pun intended) with the space that I am in....

I usually only find myself trying to sing songs when I don't know all of the lyrics. I have to track down the words and learn them to exorcise the tunes from my head!
I do tend to sing seasonal songs at the appropriate time of year - May songs in spring, summer songs at Beltane and Tam Lin at Halloween.

tarotlady, i love it that you do it too! sometimes it's like my subconscious speaks to me in music, so I get that happening a lot. Too cool!

Funny, when I first opened the thread, I thought it would be about hearing music and having it suggest lyrics/words to someone while listening.

I get this sometimes too -- most strongly for some orchestrations. I feel like I can just *almost* hear what the notes are actually verbalizing, within the context of that musical phrase. It's kinda like synethesia (sp?), (synthesizing of the senses, colors have smells, sounds have colors).

Actually it was!! I remember I got that book when I was just a kid and I was thinking: why the heck do I feel like reading this again years later??

Mwahahahaha -- because you LOVE the way King SCARES you!

(I do like King's writing, especially when he is more mystical and less "gross"!)

When I read Pet Sematary I had a long-haired black cat that I adored, and I kept thinking about him when reading about Church, the cat in the book...(shivering as I recall...)

This first started to happen when I started to study the Tarot. Now I'm not good with lyrics, but as I would look at a spread, the songs would play...the lyrics sometimes jumped right out of my mouth, and I'd say something like, "I'm not really familiar with this song, does it make sense to you" I was so surprised to find out that it did!

Thank you for sharing,

On the way home from work (10 yrs ago) I wasn't able to get any radio stations to come in but a local country station that I never listened to. Since I don't know names of country songs I can't tell you what the song was but it was about letter written to a grandmother who had passed, the letter was from the grandfather but it was being spoke through the song by the grandson, if that makes sense. Anyway I remember tears running down my face and this feeling of sadness just took over me. It was the only song I heard on the way home that day. Shortly after arriving home I got a call from my mom that my Great Grandmother had passed away.
That was the only time anything like that, regarding a song, ever happened to me.

oh, yes, tarotlady, this is happening to me alot lately. Sadly, they are only vocalizing my confusion about a personal dilemma I'm facing and not giving me any clarity - which *may* be why I notice them so much. ;)

I think I know the song. It always made me cry, too, but I did not have an experience like you did!

The chorus went:

"IF YOU GET THERE BEFORE I DO
DON'T GIVE UP ON ME
I'LL MEET YOU WHEN MY CHORES ARE THROUGH
I DON'T KNOW HOW LONG I'LL BE
BUT I'M NOT GONNA LET YOU DOWN
DARLIN' WAIT AND SEE
AND BETWEEN NOW AND THEN TIL I SEE YOU AGAIN
I'LL BE LOVING YOU, LOVE ME"

Yes Baby Owl, that is the exact song. I was trying to remember it this morning but could only remember the tune.

(dutch question)....Tarotlady the song i have had in my haed the whole day was..." ik heb een toet toet toeter op mn waterscooter en daarmee toet toer toeter in naar jouw...etc"
What do you think this would mean LOL ;)

But more important...how the hell do i get this stupid song out of my head?

wavebreaker  14 Jun 2003
ROFLMAO!!

Now that sounds incredibly deep Maan, I think that refers to some very serious issues in your childhood....

(Pfew, am I glad I don't know that song, or I would be stuck with it now...)

As I said, it doesn't happen all the time. I too have (horrible!) moments when I'm suddenly stuck with the Vogeltjesda.... NO, DON'T SAY IT!! AAARGH, too late...
