Nike Goddess Ad from 1992

this is the whole ad that I have from a Cooking Light Magazine from 1992.

Yes, this is a goddess
but you are not a goddess and you aren't ever going to be a goddess so maybe you should just get used to it. You'll never be perfect (sorry) and you're not worshipped (usually) and does this matter? No.

Goddesses are worshipped because they aren't real and they aren't us and they aren't allowed to complain. Goddesses are worshipped even though (and this is important) they are really stone and plaster and, more often then not, really dead.

And yes they will never grow old and they will never grow up and they will stay that way (stay that way stay that way). This, however, is not the way you will stay.

Because someday, since you are human, you will notice that time has passed and you are not who you were twenty years ago or ten years ago or even last week. Someday, since you are human, you will notice your body has changed and your face has changed and your kneecaps look more like Winston Churchill than ever before.

Do not be alarmed.

Because someday, since you are human, you will decide it is time to take those long walks and run down those streets and push and bend and move your body in ways you'd never thought possible. And it may be harder than you think. And you will get tired and kind of cranky and you may want to stop.

But you won't.

And as you move you will learn to rejoice in your body because it is yours and no one else's. You will learn to rejoice in being imperfect because perfect is such a complete and utter bore. You will learn to rejoice in your kneecaps because they are your kneecaps and they have seen the world.

And the goddesses, from some high and chilly mountaintop, will be jealous of you. Let them.

They are stone. You are flesh. They have pedestals. You just kicked the hell out of yours. They can't move. But you can.

Just do it.

Another ad Well these sentences are a bit all over the page. but i am just going to write them down the line.

You are not a goddess
and most likely
you will never be a goddess

but just because
you are human

that doesn't mean
we can't worship
the ground you walk on.

Like almost everything else dreamed up by over-paid ad executives, this offends me on so many levels.
First, that they have the balls to tell me I'm not a Goddess!?
Second, that they say the Goddesses are made of plaster and clay and are *dead*!?
And finally, that they are trying to manipulate me by pointing out my (peceived) weaknesses or insecurities to try and get me to *buy their crap*.
This kind of manipulation really p-s me off. No offense, RedWood. I like your response.

I took it a completely different way then you Delani..

I looked past the whole you are not a goddess part and saw the you are not perfect so why worry about it part. To me it was saying besdies buying shoes lol

That you are not perfect, we do grow old, we do age, we are human. Just do what you want. Enjoy life. Enjoy who you are and what you are.

I also took it as.

You are a Human Goddess imperfections and all. And these other ones with their lithe bodies etc that you see in ads etc. Are just that, stone, fake. Who can really see a real goddess? we can cuz we can look at ourselves and see what a Real goddess is.

I sort of liked it too. But we are goddesses in our own eyes, and perhaps in the eyes of more people than we know. But it's for the reasons (stated in the ad) that we are! We change, we grow, we hurt, we suffer, we express our joy and love and above all we LEARN. Now if that isn't holy and sacred, then what it is?

I think, aside from selling shoes, that this ad can remind us of how powerful we really are.

There was also a Nike advert. in 2000 which featured a lighthouse/Tower in the see from which two people jumped out of a window and a 'floor'... very reminiscent of the Tower card in its most positive aspect.
