Reedsong Nikolaus Lenau
Along a secret woodsy path
I like to sneak out
in the moonlit night
To the desolate reed pond
Maiden, and think of you.
Then as it grows dark in the thicket
the reeds rustle mysteriously,
moaning and whispering
that I should weep, weep.
It is as though I can hear
the sound of your voice
Your lovely singing
Softly drifting
And sinking into the pond.
Poetry by Nikolaus Lenau
Set to music by Alban Berg in "Sieben Frühen Lieder" 1907

oh, I like that Firemaiden.
I can think of a few it could be, so I'll choose the wrong one of course, hehehe
I'll start with the most obvious, The Moon?

Sounds as if maybe his loved one has dies, and he misses her terribly! Beautiful piece of writing there. I will have to check this guy out.
Like Allibee, going for the obvious first- :TDEAT DEATH?

This is a terrific passage; one of the most evocative we've had in ages. It certainly woudl fit the Moon card.
How about the 8 of Cups?

Yay!!!!!
Xouroboros gets it!
For better or for worse, the Six of Cups WAS the card I had in mind. After your answers came, I began to think I had not conceived of it well, after all it could have been the eight of cups -- walking away into the darkness, embracing mystery, or the three of swords -- sorrow, or the moon -- illusion, or death-- transfiguration of drowned love into song, or the seven of cups -- hallucinations, etc... but I had in mind the idea of nostalgia, of looking back on the past -- and suffering, craving the return of that which was lost ( a drowned love).
I also sort of thought of the Crowley Queen of Cups, post -posting, because of the image of the pond, and the confusion of the woman with all of nature around her. :-)
But anyhow, the Six of Cups WAS what I had in mind. I hope that it makes some kind of sense!
