Debauched, this profaned sacrament of Venus,
Thy poison of thy sting festers.
My dreams, aspirations, spirit's Love;
Wherefore art thou, maiden divine?
Of this number the Pythagoreans did claim:
'the virgin not born of mother'

After a bit of research [read surfing] I learned....
- for Pythagorus the number seven is a motherless virgin, because a prime number divisible by no other. See website Gematria and Sacred Geometry
Seven was known as the virgin number anciently.
[...] No number less than 7 divides into it, as two divides the number four, or three divides 6, or five divides ten, etc. Seven also produces no number by multiplication within the ten as two produces four, three produces six, four to eight and five to ten. Hence seven was the virgin number.
- The motherless virgin also refers to Athena
(minerva, sprung from the head of Zeus). See this amazing chart Pythagorean Cosmology for the number seven.
- From Book of Thoth online I learned Crowley writes of the 7 of cups:
and
The middle clue fits well with the RWSC meaning for the 7 of cups - seven cups of illusions and dreams, one of which is the veiled lady.
Thanks for the treasure hunt, jmd!

Can I now withdraw my pathetic offering of The Empress.
Sounds as if you've cracked it Firemaiden. Well done!

I was actually thinking of starting a new game on the new board for 'treasure hunt' type clues, heheh. At least I know there may be some interest in them now, LOL

Wow! Alibee, I LOVE the idea! I can't even begin to imagine how to write a treasure hunt clue, but it sure is fun to do the hunting :)

Indeed, firemaiden has not only correctly cracked my rather obscure references, but provided a wonderful commentary!
For what it's worth, here is how I was going to explain it (though now shortened :)):Debauched, this profaned sacrament of Venus,
Thy poison of thy sting festers.
This stems from considering especially the Crowley/Harris version of the card. Crowley titles this card 'debauch', with Venus in Scorpio as its astrological association.. He also says that the 'Lotuses have become poisonous', and 'it is a wholesome reminder of the fatal ease with which a Sacrament may be profaned and prostituted' ( Book of Thoth , p 199).
Waite, on the other hand, talks of this card as bein of 'strange chalices of vision'. 'imagse of [...] sentiment, imagination' and 'desire' ( The Pictorial Key to the Tarot , p 212), hence my:
My dreams, aspirations, spirit's Love;
Wherefore art thou, maiden divine?
The third century Christian neo-platonist Anatolius, in On the Decad , makes the comment regarding the number seven, which I paraphrased, with little change, thus:
Of this number the Pythagoreans did claim:
'the virgin not born of mother' So over to you, firemaiden :):):)
