So many of us here are confessed Tarot-holics, understandably obsessive about acquiring the next beautiful deck that speaks to us.... and so I'm wondering something: those of us who collect Tarot, do we also collect anything else?
For instance, I've tried to resist the pull of acquiring the next wonderful deck with all my strength, and I've managed, with some effort, to keep it down to under a dozen must-haves. But maybe I simply have collecting in my genes. I also collect other things besides Tarot: Hindu statuary. They call to me, and I find I can't stop myself.
Do you collect something else? Coins? Creamers in the shape of cows? Antique valentines? Back issues of comic books? I want to know!

Books, lots and lots of books! I love to read and re-read the books that I have. Every time I go to the used book store they ask if I have anything to trade and I say "Of course not!"
Witches! I started collecting witch figurines or other cool things depicting witches a year or so ago. I have one that stays on my altar all the time. A candle holder made by a friend and a wraparound the bannister one... more will be coming after Samhain!

Orchids: I have over 90. This weekend I'll be at a big orchid fair in Santa Barbara, CA so expect my count to exceed 100 by next week.
I'm an avid reader but I like to send my books out to be enjoyed by others. I only keep the ones I can't live without but I have A LOT of books.
I also have an annoying collection of Star Trek stuffed teddy bears .
Maybe you could say pets: I know my limit, but I have two dogs, two bunnies, two rats and a guinea pig. Unfortunately I also have a rather large collection of dust bunnies that live under my couch and bed ;).

ancient coins.
all coins actually, but ancient Greek silver and Roman bronzes are my passion. i have one from circa 650 BC, and quite alot from the Hellenistic period (known as "The period of finest art"!)
lighthouses.
paintings, statues, stuff. but mostly photos that i've taken myself. the Dragonfly and i travel all over the west coast of the US and Canada tracking them down. covered bridges too.
which leads me to what is probably my most active collection...
waterfalls.
we've visited over 250 of them all around the Pacific Northwest. i photograph them, and the Dragonfly paints them.
this is more than just a hobby however, this is a spiritual pursuit. i find them SO soothing and magickal, and there is no place on Earth that i can make a stronger connection to Goddess.
i actually started to build a website on the spiritual nature of waterfalls, but found that to be just beyond my limited techno-abilities. been thinking about taking another shot at it though.
here's a few...

Rosaries, chaplets, malas--prayer beads from all traditions.
Books, books, books! No particular subject; it just depends on what I'm interested in at any given moment.
Bibles, especially study Bibles, foreign Bibles, and anything unusual that I am lucky enough to discover in second-hand shops.
Key chains; a collection that came about by accident, sort of. They just multiplied!
Frogs, since childhood. I don't really collect frogs anymore, but I have about 200+ frog-themed items (statues, candles, ashtrays, cups, toys, etc.) in storage.
Trolls...yes, those ugly little fuzzy-haired dolls. Also from when I was a kid; also somewhere in the garage.

Hmmm... what a fun thread!
My oldest collection (in more than one way) is my mineral specimens. I've been collecting rocks and minerals since I was a kid. Recently, my wife managed to convince me to start collecting cut gemstones as well as mineral specimens...
Other than that, I seem to mostly collect hobbies. I've got a few stamps, some coins, I paint (water color), I bird watch, wood work, a little bit of stone carving, etc... hoo boy. I guess I'm an Aeclectic hobbyist... :joke:
Alobar, you commented on your love of all things Holmesian. I'm wondering if you have come across a couple of Sherlock Holmes novels, not written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, from the 70's. The only title I remember is "Sherlock Holmes and the Sacred Sword" (or something like that). If you've heard of that can you give me the author's name? Thanks.

Hi all,
Well, some of you have some of the same collections I have: books, genealogy, Bibles, Runes, oracles, and of course Tarot. I also have a collection of yo-yos and one of Wimbledon Men’s Tennis Championship towels. I play the ocarina so I have several of those as well. And then there are my DVDs and CDs! I guess I have a tendancy to collect just about anything! My house is full of all kinds of stuff. There will be quite an interesting yard sale when die! He, he, he, :)

yup.
he also did one called 'Sherlock Holmes and the Golden Bird'... got them both.
everyone who existed in the 1890's (and even later) has been written into the Holmes stories... Oscar Wilde, Teddy Roosevelt, Dracula, Tarzan, Alfred Dreyfus, endless Jack the Ripper treatments, etc. some of these are truly hideous, but i wouldn't miss them for the world.
i have one by Isaac Asimov where Holmes is a crime fighting dog from outer space, and a very interesting one by John Lennon!

I have lots of books, but that's not a collection, that's just normal!:)
I collect pressed glass candlesticks - I have over a hundred. Some date back to the 1880s, some are modern, but most are from the 1920-30s, and they come in a great variety of shapes, sizes and colours. I have branched out from that and also collect other pieces of pressed glass, mostly English. I have some bits of uranium glass (it was used to colour the glass green or yellow, and glows under UV light) and some cloud glass.
I love the artwork of Alphonse Mucha and collect posters, books, postcards and all kinds of stuff that feature it. I have around twenty Mucha mirrors, which were produced in the 70s.
As for ceramics, there's the Lesley Anne Ivory cat plates and the coffee mugs, and I seem to be branching out into vases, particularly ones shaped like cornucopias.
I have a growing collection of magical stuff - wands, pentacles and incense burners.
I'm also a jewellery nut and have far too many beads, pendants, rings and bracelets! And don't even talk about the earrings...!
Actually, the tarot decks are a pretty small part of my collections.
Jilly
my other half collects books and comics (a whole roomful!) and CDs (3500 and growing) - there really isn't much free space in our little house!

stones. any interesting looking rocks i see along my way.

and, unfortunately, dust. lots of it. a colletion I try to be rid of, but it always reappears
I'm sure there's more....

Wow...I guess it all depends on your definiition of "collection"...
I have accumulated so much...stuff...and I love all of it!
So, stuff I have more than 30 of...(a true collection!)
Along with tarot and oracle decks, I collect other fortune telling devices...Tea leaf cups, palmistry games, ouiji boards...and more damn magic 8 balls than I know what to do with!
I have a huge collection of Alice in Wonderland items...including 40 different illustrated versions,
I also have a huge collection of children's books, which my friends find amusing, as I don't have any children! (yet!...but when I do they are going to READ!)
I also collect (and make) carnival masks. The favorites in my collection are the Venitian paper mache ones, but I also collect feathered Mardi Gras masks too! And then there's the costume closet...
I have way too many things with faeries, and dragonflies(my totem), and lots of stuff with crows on them...(my other totem)
And a vast collection of pirate stuff, including antique maps, ship models, and swords....
Oh, and there's more...but those are the main collections...
and if what a person collects defines his or her character...then I wonder what my stuff says about me? (LOL)

In addition to tarot cards I collected comic books, although I only have comics I would be unlikely to sell - Sandman, the TICK, Green Arrow done by Grell, etc. I liked eerie comics even as a kid.
I collect stuff with a celestial theme, mostly handmade items.
I also collect silver jewelry. I buy at least one piece every new place we travel, and I try to find local craftspeople when I can.
And, last of the major collections, rubber stamping. I am always on the lookout for unusual, or realistic stamps - especially screaming people, celestial and/or outerspace and fantasy. Oh, and nudes. And along with rubber stamps, I have to mention my paper. Piles of paper. Mountains of lovely, beautiful paper. :D

I collect pins. I always try and by one when I'm on holiday, to try and make my pin collection reflect my travels.
And I collect bookmarks. The paper ones, not the internet ones ;).
I am very picky in collecting though, I don't buy just any pin or bookmark, so my collections are still very small.

Books is the main one after Tarot decks. Together my boyfriend and I have around 900. They are mostly Paganism, Tarot, Witchcraft, Hermetics, Magick, etc, oh and fiction and Philosophy. But often we'll become interested in a subject and buy books on that too, so there's all sorts of books in the collection!
Butterflies. I can't help but love them.

Fabric- for projects that never get finished, though some are soooo close!
FIESTAWARE (if you don't know...)
Oh- maybe my huge stash of herb tea qualifies? mmm... ginger or peppermint tonight? Cammomile? Licorice? Decisions, decisions...

Music. Sheet and CDs. I have more CDs than I can ever listen to, but I just can't stop buying them. It's awful! I see music I like, and there we go-there's no stopping me!
With sheet music, I don't so much "collect" as "accumulate". In my house, the phrase would be "Sheet happens" (music, that is. sorry, I couldn't resist.) It just sort of appears. I've got drawers full of it, my bedroom floor and many of my house's flat surfaces are covered with it...I think it's becoming somewhat of a problem.

Besides tarot and oracle decks and books, theres:
More books, of course! I'm a big book-worm, with most of mine in the areas of: psychology and neurology, consciousness studies, mythology, childrens' book illustrators, and more.
Matchbooks, mainly from Minnesota. You don't find them very much anymore, now that everyone uses lighters, so each one I find from a local hotel or restaurant or bank is all the more interesting.
I also started out collecting silver baby cups, but that has become a collection of enamelware baby cups with fairy-tales or other child-like illustrations on them.
When I was younger I collected stamps and coins, but interest in those collections faded with time. They're still hiding somewhere in my closet, though!
(BTW, Alobar: My favorite modern novels about Holmes are by a Minnesota writer named Larry Millett. In his books, Holmes and Watson come to Minnesota to solve mysteries at the behest of local pioneer tycoon James J. Hill.)
Peace,
Melvis

Collections? or Obsessions?
I started out young with dragons, faeries, unicorns and wizards.
Then came the Si Fi times, Dr. Who (books episodes, scarves), Anything Star Trek ( even TV guides) for any series ( I still have Jean Luc on my desk)
Anything Taz for a time, Oh and a lot of craft projects (blame my mother for that one)
Tarot cards of course (up to two now) because I have that giving of things away problem ;)
But always and forever.... the passion of my youth.. Dragons, Faeries, Unicorns and Wizards....to include the 3 dragons and 2 unicorns I have tatooed on my body.
And would 50 matching sets of underwear be an obsession?? })

I'm a pack rat. But as for actual collections....
1) Coins (ie. silver money from 1960 or older; money from other countries)
2) Porcelain Dolls (well, I only have 9 and I haven't collected for a few years. But I still love them.)
3) Stuffed Animals (I'm trying to collect less. I easily have over 200 spread throughout my room, or the house)
4) Memories (I have a 'memory box' where I keep random things that I've collected over the years, pictures, etc.)
5) Convos and E-mails (If you can call that a collection. I have more than a hundred saved conversations between my boyfriend and I alone. As for e-mails, I have lots of folders, him having three.)
6) Writing (I figured I should include this, as my website has archives of all my stories, poetry, etc. Also artwork, dreams, the list goes on...)
Oh, and I'm sure there's more that I'm overlooking.

Hmmm.....I've really slacked off on my collections. I realized how bad of a packrat I was and decided to get rid of a lot of stuff (and I don't have money to add to collections now).
Anyway, current collections include:
Books -- Stephen King, Dean Koontz, John Saul, Peter Straub, historical fiction, lots of Pagan/Wiccan/metaphysical, romances, pretty much anything. I review books for a Web site, so I keep getting more and more (and don't have time to read them all!).
Journals -- I do a lot of journaling, so any time I find blank books on the clearance rack at Borders or Barnes & Noble, I snap 'em up. Right now I have probably enough journals to last me for five years....if I don't buy any more!
Debt. ;)
Friends.
Hopes, wishes and daydreams.
CDs, DVDs and videos. "The X-Files" is a particularly large portion of my collection (and I'm behind!).
Ocean stuff -- Seashells, beach scenes, ocean scenes, anything.
Flip flops. Love 'em. Wanna move somewhere warm where I can wear 'em all year long.
Jewelry -- It's genetic. I'm from a family of magpies, I swear. ("Oooh, shiny.....")
I have lots of candles but I don't really consider it a collection. Just a bunch I've accumulated that I haven't burned yet!
And in the past, I've collected postcards, stamps, Magic the Gathering cards, X-Files cards, Beanie Babies, stuffed monkeys/gorillas, cats, unicorns, ribbons, costume jewelry, pretty much anything.

My biggest collection is undoubtedly my books, though when I moved a couple months ago I got rid of several hundred (the library loves me a lot ;)). I still have a ton...the majority about vampires, fantasy, history, and Europe.
I love roses, and have several perfumes, boxes, notecards and the like, but I am much too busy (and when not busy, lazy) to actually grow any.
Silver jewelry...must be silver, no gold for me.
Ty beanie babies...only if they are cute, and not just so I can say I have so many...my favorites are the unicorn, frog, and I also have a brown dragon and a white dragon that I think are boyfriend and girlfriend.
And my sort of hidden/guilty pleasure collection is Eeyore from Winnie the Pooh, and Snoopy (because when people see all the stuff I have and find out that I'm in grad school they kind of look at me funny).

Oh, guess I thought Taroholics were just addicted to doing Tarot stuff, not neccessarily collecting decks and books and paraphanalia, guess I'm just Tarot Obsessive then.
Seems all I manage to do is collect stuff, like a crow collects shiny objects, nothing of $ value ,just things that things that strike my fancy and imagination. Can't get rid of anything because I know I'm going to use it for something one of these days and will need it.
But if I had a well balanced bank account then I'm sure I would be a Taroholic and make my wish list come true, several times.

books (many, many books on varied subjects)
Zuni fetishes (mostly bears and crows/ravens)
stones (from an amethyst cathedral to cool little rocks I find when walking)
knives (I especially like hand-knapped obsidian)
herbs and incense
tattoos

I collect angels, CDs (thousands), and books (I don't even know how many....lots and lots on all kinds of subjects...novels, biographies, textbooks, cookbooks, you name it, I've got it! I even have all my books from when I was a child...right back to my early favourites, "Are You My Mother?" and "The Monster at the End of this Book". For some reason, I just can't bear to get rid of a book, even if I know I'll probably never read it again!). Maybe it's time to get some self-help books on how to get rid of things -- of course, I probably won't be able to get rid of those either, and they'll just join the rest on my bookshelves! :)

Cat whiskers. Ours drop them occasionally & I have a blue bottle that they all go into. Considering there's whiskers from the last 18 years, the bottle is getting rather full....
And bones. When I go out walking in the woods I sometimes find bones or skulls: cat, raccoon, skunk, seagull & other birds from the beach, deer, etc. They invariably find their way home with me to the garage where they sort of sit out there. I use some occasionally as artist models for reference, when I draw.
Books--mostly historical or science fiction.
And IBMFETIDNT disease -- (*I bought more fabric even though I don't need it). Sadly, there's still 2 bolts sitting in the trunk of the car that haven't made it into the house yet...

So many of us here are confessed Tarot-holics, understandably obsessive about acquiring the next beautiful deck that speaks to us.... and so I'm wondering something: those of us who collect Tarot, do we also collect anything else?
I collect stamps (yes, I know, pretty nerdy) and pressed pennies. ;) If I had the money, I probably would collect much more stuff, including more tarot decks. :P

You collect anything you like, Gypsy Momma - it's YOUR life, and don't let anyone tell you different. I used to collect sugar packets with pictures on. I still would, probably, if they hadn't been so appealing to mice.... There are some great pictures to be had. The little flags were best. And the flowers. And I never did complete the zodiac set. And the little cartoon cats. And............
Hey, I just loved them OK. And I shall go on doing if I like. You too.

I have a collection of collections. It's really that bad. Anything that strikes my fancy, I collect it.
My boyfriend and I have a collection of about 1500 books, maybe more. We haven't yet organized them all.
I also have a collection of unsharpened pencils (about 250 last time I counted, but I've been throwing pencils in there for years), Bugs and butterflies and moths are one of my favorites. Glass... I just have a collection of anything glass, though I do have a separate collection of glass figurines. And stuffed animals. And trophies and ribbons, but those are just in a small container. I have a box filled with so many different types of cards. I just love cards! And I have my collection of Japanese things. My collection of journals (I don't usually write in). My collection of practice weapons. My Johnny Depp movie collection (started by my wonderful boyfriend :D). I did have a rock collection but my mom threw it away (accidentally), but I've been collecting more. I cried for days after she threw it out, because I could trace most of those rocks to before I was six.
There are others I have, but those are just the large ones :D My boyfriend has the more normal ones: comic books, stamps, coins, rocks, and things like that. :)

I used to collect minerals before I started collecting Tarot. But I have to admit that Tarot has pushed that one completely to the background. I still have my old collection though. I also collect a number of comics, mainly Elfquest. And I collect Magic the Gathering online cards. I used to have every card 4x until I realized that I rather have physical cards then digital ones, so now I have trimmed it down to a mere 2600.
I am afraid that in general my tarot collection has taken over every other collection and is ruling my house nowadays.

Oh, I forgot. I also got a collection of coins. All kinds of foreign coins. Most of them European, so they are now replaced by the Euro. But I can't seem to part with them. And everytime I go on a holiday, I always save one coin of each kind of the currency.

Oh - but aren't you trying to get a complete set of every country's euros ? and trying to see how many different ones you can get in any one country (best so far was in Vienna - you get loads of strange ones there - but still not Finnish !) Got any Vatican City yet ?????

If I come across them, then I do also keep and collect the new Euro coins. I got a special folder for it, but I am not actively going after them. I have got quite a few. I do have Finnish ones, but that is because I got a friend living there. No Vatican City yet either and since I am not going that way, I wonder if I will get ever get them.

I collect hardcover books, mostly of poetry, Shakespeare, British 19th century literature, like Dickens, Hardy, Brontes, etc. That is the result of being an English major and a bookworm. I used to collect David Winter Cottages, but they are no longer made, so I have my 35+ cottages in front of my Dickens and Hardy novels. I also collect Wee-Forest Folk (cute, wee mice doing all sorts of neat things) but they are so expensive. And postcards, mostly of historical houses that we enjoy touring!

Er (blush :|) well, sort of I guess. Though I have been known to spend them in emergencies (like when I have no other money on me.....)
(sigh.) (and Umbrae reckons [thread=42851]in another thread[/thread] that REAL collectors don't use their stuff so maybe it doesn't count....)
I do have a LOT of old French franc coins - but that was an oversight; I meant to take it all with me and cash it in for Euros in France just before it was demonetised - and when we left I couldn't find it, so now it's useless.
HEY - I can sell it on e-bay as collectable coins.... MORE TAROT MONEY ! Just as well, considering I am watching a deck with a week to go and already up to $75..... (don't all rush !)

waterfalls. [/i]
we've visited over 250 of them all around the Pacific Northwest. i photograph them, and the Dragonfly paints them.
this is more than just a hobby however, this is a spiritual pursuit. i find them SO soothing and magickal, and there is no place on Earth that i can make a stronger connection to Goddess.
i actually started to build a website on the spiritual nature of waterfalls, but found that to be just beyond my limited techno-abilities. been thinking about taking another shot at it though.
here's a few...

Dear Alobar, I humbly request a waterfall tarot. Please.
I collect:
1. Books (like so many here). Mysteries, metaphysical, cookbooks, history, art and biographies. I love biographies.
2. Jewelry. Mostly silver with semi-precious stones or marcasite but some things are in gold set with fine gems. And I LOVE good cz jewelry. I have a limited number of costume pieces because I am allergic to metals other than silver and gold. Sparkle R us.
3. Crystals and stones of all sorts. In and out of the house. I like to harvest my own rocks for my garden. So much more meaningful.
4. Hats and masks with feathers. And more hats which I never wear. Drat.
5. Crystal glass - bowls, glasses, decanters and eye candy
6. Ribbons and gift wrap
7. Holiday ornaments but not those dreadfully expensive ones.
8. Uncompleted craft projects <>

Now that is familiar to me.. oh, lets sell this or that so I have more TAROT MONEY!!! Hahaha! I think the only reason my little collection of coins has survived is because it is somewhere tucked away in a drawer and I never take them out (and before that, my parents owned all the coins). Not that there is really any serious cash there.. sigh.. I wish.. (thinking more tarots again :) )

Have you seen what the most BASIC coins are fetching ? I only noticed because my daughter collects Canadian pennies, and is buying up lots of job lots which include single dates she's missing - and then selling the left-overs - and she's making a profit !!!

Darn it, Gregory. Now you are making me look up my little coin collection to get more tarot cash :).
But yeah, like every collectable, there is always a market and I am sure there is one for coins too. For some reason, I wouldn't want to part with them yet though. They hold dear childhood memories for me, from the time that I used to play with them (that is how it all started out really).

I seem to collect everything because it looks like something I may find a use for someday and am quite positive if I toss it, I will need it the next day. When ever someone gives me junk, I can never refuse it.
Unfortunately, none of this is of any real moneytary value and is not really collectables.

For Alobar and his collection - have you visited this one? :) - this link has a treasure of nice pictures of my little country, I just found out!
My collections? Hmm, rocks from everywhere I go to, including one of Major Tom's garden ;) featuring a face on one side... and shells if I get to visit a seaside.
Quills. And interesting pens. And beautiful bottles (if they are for free, so I do not have many) to put my liqueur in. Usually I do not keep them, they go away with the liqueur when I give them to dear friends :)

Other than Tarot decks, tarot books and books in general...
I seem to collect anything that strikes me as being unique. For example, I have gone into a store and I saw 4 plates that were so very pretty. I grabbed all 4 of them and haven't seen them anywhere else. :D There is this other thing I have on my personal shelf that looks like an urn, even though it is not. Anyone who has come into my house will stare at it cautiously and then ask, "IS someone in there?" I like to joke... so I will shrug and tell them to take a look. ;) There are plenty of little things around my home.
I also like collecting angels, crystals, candle stick holders... the list just keeps growing. I think I need a bigger house. :/
