That last one was really great! what an amazingly appropriate song for the image!
Allrighty...time to try my hand at this...

This is a Peter Gabriel tune...

Don't Give Up

In this proud land we grew up strong
We were wanted all along
I was taught to fight , taught to win
I never thought I could fail

No fight left or so it seems
I am a man whose dreams have all deserted
I've changed my face, I've changed my name
but no one wants you when you lose

Don't give up, 'cos you have friends
Don't give up, you're not beaten yet
Don't give up, I know you can make it good

Though I saw it all around
never thought that I could be affected
Thought that we'd be last to go
It is so strange the way things turn

Drove the night toward my home
The place that Iwas born, on the lakeside
As daylight broke, I saw the earth
The trees had burned down to the ground

Don't give up, you still have us
Don't give up, we don't need much of anything
Don't give up, 'cause somewhere there's a place where we belong

Rest your head, you worry too much
It's going to be allright
When times get rough, you can fall back on us
Don't give up, please don't give up

'Got to walk out of here
I can't take anymore
going to stand on that bridge
keep my eyes down below
Whatever may come
and whatever may go
That river's flowing

Moved on to another town
tried hard to settle down
for every job, so many men
so many men no one needs

Don't give up, 'cause you have friends
Don't give up, you're not the only one
Don't give up, no reason to be ashamed
Don't give up, you still have us
Don't give up now, we're proud of who you are
Don't give up, you know it's never been easy
Don't give up, 'cause I believe there's a place
there's a place where we belong

Six Wands?

Black dragon  20 Sep 2003
Eight of Swords?

Black Dragon.

lunalafey  20 Sep 2003
9 of wands?

Scorpion  20 Sep 2003
9 Wands?

(Ouch - Lunalafey: you just beat me to it! Let's see whether we're right..... if we are, you obviously get precedence!)

Chronata  20 Sep 2003
Ah...I didn't think this would be so hard!

JMD...6 of wands is an interesting thought...but not what I had in mind...

Black Dragon...8 swords is a good guess...and I can see where you interpreted this...but also not what I was thinking.

Lunalafey and LouiQ...the 9 of wands is a GREAT answer...but also not the card that I chose (although some parts of the song do fit!)
Keep guessing!

The Star?

rota  20 Sep 2003
6 of Cups, maybe?

Black dragon  20 Sep 2003
OK well i'm keeping with my sword cards, how about a
4 of swords,
someone howz just having a bit of a break.

Black Dragon.

Kiama  21 Sep 2003
8 of Cups... The way the person just gives up on th ecups and moves forward... Sometimes I actually see this card as saying 'don't give up just yet... there's still more to those cups!'

7 of Batons (Wands) ?

Chronata  21 Sep 2003
Huh...no one's guessed it yet!
I can't help but think that some of the guesses are more appropriate for the song than the card I intended! (LOL!)

Can I give hints? well, it's a Minor...

and if you know the song...there are two voices...the first verses sung by Peter Gabriel, and the "don't give up" parts sung by Kate Bush...
.actually this probably just confuses things more!

Diana  21 Sep 2003
Is it that horrid 10 of Swords from the Rider Waite deck?

rota  21 Sep 2003
Okay -- 2 of Swords!

Black dragon  21 Sep 2003
ok then, howz bout the whole unexpected plesent time type stuff, with the:

Knight of Cups,

OK so i'm leaving the whole swords now!!!

Scorpion  21 Sep 2003
Don't think anybody's gone for 6 Swords yet....

Chronata  21 Sep 2003
huh. No it's not swords.....alas! methinks I was too obscure!
No one has it yet!

Scorpion  21 Sep 2003
OK - refusing to give up: 5 Cups!

Chronata  21 Sep 2003
Yay LouiQ! That's the one! you got it!

The reason...here's a song about someone in the midst of depression...feeling so much loss, and sorrow... And dealing with "dreams deserted"...and yet there's this voice behind him saying "don't give up...you still have us!" and "You can fall back on us!" which is like the standing cups behind him, reminding hoim that all is not really lost.
And in the RWS there's the image of the bridge...where" that river's flowing..." in the backround of the card.
This song has always reminded me of this particular card...and the idea that even in the worst fits of sorrow and loss...you should not give up, because there's still so much that is not lost!

OK..LouiQ...tag...you're it!

Scorpion  22 Sep 2003
*puts on best Oscar acceptance speech voice*

Thank you, Chronata! You certainly gave us food for thought!

I'd just like to say a few thank yous to all those who've helped me up into the limelight here today *sob* my parents, my cats, my dogs *sob* my decks....*sob, sob*

*LouiQ carried off by the men in white coats*
