I rather like the Aquarian, because the meanings aren't obvious unless you've studied the cards quite a bit :)
But I wonder if the Russian Tarot of St Petersburg (which I don't have) wouldn't be pretty impressive to people? All that gold filigree? Well, it impresses me :)

I think the large, no-names, no-numbers Visconti Sforza would impress people... It looks so old, so mystical, so big!
I also think the Thoth deck impresses people: it's by Crowley, it's really deep, and it impresses pther Tarot readers too!

The Tarot of Prague, a deck that shows the soul of a city, and is a deck that was released this year, making it an appropriate choice.

I haven't seen alot of decks and of course it is a personal preference..Someone into music might be impressed by the R n R Tarot. I also think the Vampire Tarot is beautiful.

i find the neferteri deck very impressive with all that gold foil. it's what i would use if i wanted to impress someone. next would be the rohrig, ananda or margarete peterson. i'm quite foud of my german decks.

Shouldn't it be the reading that impresses people, instead of the deck? :D

My vote would probably be for the Vertigo (okay, okay, it's not mine yet...). The cards are outstanding and modern, and even people I pointed towards it online have said how gorgeous it is. Maybe in a few decades, I'll be able to combine an impressive deck with an impressive reading! xxx

My vote is the Visconti Gold, simply because of the reactions I've already gotten whenever I used it--and I'm not just talking about my querents...
The antique look and the shiny gold foil draws people from across a room to look at it.
I've actually regretfully chosen other tarot decks over this one for readings, just because I know that I will be in a public place where it will likely draw too many admirers.
It is also the deck that changed my boss's view about tarot.
When he saw my Visconti, he realized that the cards are also beautiful representations of art and history.
He has since proclaimed the Visconti Gold HIS favorite of all my decks!

I know what you mean, tarotlady, and I agree wholeheartedly.
However, my own experience of people's reactions to decks includes those for whom I never conduct readings.
Plenty of my friends and colleagues--some who don't even "approve" of tarot--still like to look at my cards.
So, I also understand Kiama's idea of a deck that just plain makes an impression with it's appearance.
Hence, my vote. The Visconti Gold is the one deck in my collection that has actually stopped people in their tracks to admire it.
:)
EDITED: to correct obsessively nagging little details. ;)

I like the idea, for impressing others, of using a deck that someone unfamiliar with tarot could not read at all. :)
I would say unillustrated pips, or a surreal, very modern deck would do it.

My vote for "ooooh! impressive deck ya got there"...
The Rock N Roll...impressive even if you are not a huge music fan!
And I also would include the Vertigo...impressive on a deep visual/mystical level.

I agree with Kiama that the Crowley deck impresses people. People who i've shown it to either love or are afraid of it,due to Crowley's reputation and association with black magic. Of the decks own, I think the Masonic deck impresses some people. ialso agree with Tallarino that the Vampire Tarot is very beautiful. But overall, I vote for the Crowley Thoth out of the decks I've seen. Blessings, wolfen

People have always been impressed when I have read with the Rohrig; I think its down to the size and the details of the illustrations. It comes accross quite dark as well, when you know little about the tarot in general.

for impressing people my vote would go completely for the Whimsical Tarot, cause as your explaining the meanings, your other persons are thinking of the fairy tales and being amazed at how their favorite childrens tales are telling them the answers to there questions.

i think the mategna tarot would do a good job because it's such a beautiful deck. the victoria regina too because it's such a classy non-traditional deck, with wonderful engravings.

Viscont Gold. I have it, love it but don't use it as I am afraid the foil might rub of.

A deck, whether copied from another design or not, which one has painted oneself... with lots of metallic paint included.
'I haven't seen this deck ever before ?!'
'No... it's one I designed myself after years of study - all the others had errors which needed to be rectified...'
or
'In the Tradition, one needs to paint one's own deck following the Hallmarks of initiatory descent - I was permitted to paint this deck after a looong period of trials and tribulations...'
'Wow... [then silence, which you need to encourage for a reasonable time, to permit the depth of the situation to be appreciated]

Personally, I am most impressed with the rock and roll deck. But I love rock n roll (to quote Joan Jett ;). Friends of mine who are into movies might be impressed by one of the cinematic tarot decks. Etc. But if I have to vote, I go with Rock and Roll.

There's nothing like a good old Tarot of Marseilles to impress someone. And the more battered and worn the better, 'cos it makes you look like you've been reading for about a hundred years. You can even say the cards were given to you by your grand-mother as an inheritance.
"You mean you can actually READ with those cards??? All the minor arcana look exactly the same!"
Of course, if you have a blank, you can make up anything, because no-one will know the difference. All you need to do is say something like "Be careful with your finances". Everyone needs to be careful with their finances, so it sounds okay.
