Okay, here goes:

Excerpt from Mrs. Dalloway By Virgina Woolf

She would not say of any one in the world now that they were this or were that. She felt very young; at the same time unspeakably aged. She sliced like a knife through everything; at the same time was outside, looking on. She had a perpetual sense.... of being out, out, far out to sea and alone; she always had the feeling that it was very, very dangerous to live even one day.

(For anyone who is familiar with this passage, I did omit approximately five words that distracted from the tarot card of which I am thinking.)

It seems to have a Queen of Swords feel...

Queen of Swords?

Queen of Swords?

Molly  30 Oct 2003
Well, I can definitely see the Queen of Swords there; I just had something different in mind. ;)

The Fool?

Or the Six of Swords?

2/Swords?

What about Justice?

The double-edged sword, scales of balance.

LOL! Gloria has it!

The two of swords!

With that blindfold and long sleeves, it isn't really certain how old she is-she could be either young or old. She is obviously somewhere in the middle-at a time when it is easy to feel either. She can easily "slice like a knife" with those two swords. She is obviously sitting on land, but the sea is behind her... how did she get to where she was? She could be on a sandbar or in the middle of an island out to sea. It is certainly reasonable to imagine her feeling very alone. "On the outside, looking on"... twist that just a little to looking in... But the thing that did it for me is that last lovely line. With the blindfold, and the precarious balancing of the swords... it is dangerous to live like that. Maybe necessary at times, maybe unavoidable, but definitely dangerous.

Okay, Gloria, you're up.

Sorry this one was so easy. I just love that passage so much.

Thanks Molly - yes it was a great passage.

Give me a little while, I'll be back.

Gloria.
