What card am I? (Literature clues)- Solved

Thread originally posted on the Aeclectic Tarot Forum on 23 Oct 2003, and now archived in the Forum Library.

gloria  23 Oct 2003
The concrete highway was edged with a mat of tangled, broken, dry grass, and the grass heads were heavy with oat beards to catch on a dog’s coat, and foxtails to tangle in a horse’s fetlocks, and clover burrs to fasten in sheep’s wool; sleeping life waiting to be spread and dispersed, every seed armed with an appliance of dispersal, twisting darts and parachutes for the wind, little spears and balls of tiny thorns, and all waiting for animals and for the wind, for a man’s trouser cuff or the hem of a woman’s skirt, all passive but armed with appliances of activity, still, but each possessed of the anlange of movement.

From The Grapes of Wrath – John Steinbeck

Four of Swords?

Chronata  23 Oct 2003
Could it be the 8 of wands?

Gaidheal  23 Oct 2003
Hmm...Nine of Rods, maybe?

gloria  24 Oct 2003
No so far,

You could say it has the touch of the 4/Swords about it, and it definitely has the movement of 8/Wands.

Gloria.

gloria  24 Oct 2003
Just to say it is movement, but not the swift movement associated with 8/Wands.
G.

jmd  24 Oct 2003
five Swords?

Moongold  25 Oct 2003
Moon? I am looking at this grassy field with wild dogs in it and a concrete road leading towards the horizon. You wouldn't really wanna hang around this place. You'd be attacked by grass seeds of various descriptions, and lobsters....

gloria  25 Oct 2003
Oh Moongold the beards and burrs and seeds won't attack you.
They only need a lift. When the time is right they'll part company with you!

Sorry JMD and Moongold but no.

G.

jmd  25 Oct 2003
OK, how about simply VII the Chariot?

Moongold  25 Oct 2003
It looks pretty grassy around Empress?

gloria  25 Oct 2003
No JMD,
No Moongold.

jmd  25 Oct 2003
I'll just have one more attempt...

the two Battons

gloria  25 Oct 2003
I hope not the last attempt JMD, you have to persevere!

I may have led you down the wrong path by using the word 'lift' you may have seen that as a clue.

This particular movement isn't governed by wheels of any kind.

Gloria.

I'll try to come up with a good clue.

gloria  25 Oct 2003
The seeds, burrs and oat beards here are undergoing a process.
This process shows the route you should be taking to solve the clue.
G.

Moongold  25 Oct 2003
Is it like growing from scratch? Perhaps one of the Aces ....Ace Pentacles perhaps?

Or perhaps it is the Star, supposed to be Persephone who lived underground for a while (as seeds "sleep" like 4 Swords) before they reach for the light of day. Persephone came up from the under world to the light of earthly day, as do the seeds you refer to.......?

gloria  25 Oct 2003
The grass heads, foxtails, burrs etc referred to in the paragraph have dried up and died.
But what do these dried up husks contain?
And what do they search for?

Does this help?
G.

Moongold  25 Oct 2003
No..........dear Gloria..........not really  Seeds loking for ground to grow in?

Moongold  25 Oct 2003
Water? Something Cups?

How about Ace Cups?

firemaiden  25 Oct 2003
I get a 5 of pentacles feeling from this passage, everything dry, parched sort of... lonely and cut off feeling...

Jewel-ry  25 Oct 2003
Hi

I hope anyone can join in...........

Is it the 3 wands?

Moongold  25 Oct 2003
How about the Tower?

The description of the seeds waiting on the road. They must have been blown there by a wind of some kind. Something has dislocated them from their original source and now they are just waiting to be rebuilt - to have an opportunity to regrow.

jmd  25 Oct 2003
EVERYONE may certainly join in!!!

How about simply XX - Judgement

Moongold  25 Oct 2003
Yea ............... this is fun :)

C'mon Gloria.......hurry up  I can't wait...

gloria  26 Oct 2003
Sorry Jewel-ry and Firemaiden but no.

The paragraph is describing how nature takes its course in the dispersal of seeds.(new life)

Yes Moongold you are on right track.
And JMD I thought Judgement would have been the first choice.
So…….you are now getting warmer.

PS
I feel I may have to go and lie down in a dark room. The card I have in mind is beginning to elude me, I have to try and recapture it! (This is not a clue it is for real!)

Just read this again Firemaiden - pretty warm - these are the feelings you should be getting.
G.

Moongold  26 Oct 2003
10 Swords - the end before the beginning 1+0 equals 1 the beginning?

....a kind of cut to pieces feeling ?

You have to die to begin.....cast off the old to be reborn...

gloria  26 Oct 2003
No Moongold, not a 'cut to pieces' feeling, but it is about new beginnings.

You'd get a sense of 'lonely and cut off' on the face of this card.

G.

Moongold  26 Oct 2003
Fool?

He is setting off with a dog, after all  ....

gloria  26 Oct 2003
Yes I think very much so, casting off the old to be reborn.

G.

Moongold  26 Oct 2003
Or World ?

Moongold  26 Oct 2003
So it is the Fool?

gloria  26 Oct 2003
 No not The Fool.

jmd  26 Oct 2003
XIII

Moongold  26 Oct 2003
Pipped at the post. Gloria in excelsius Deo :joke:
Congratulations JMD......

That was HARD but fun Gloria!

gloria  26 Oct 2003
Very much Judgement, Death overtones, but not quite what I had in mind.
Not a Major.
G.

gloria  26 Oct 2003
Not finished yet Moongold.

jmd  26 Oct 2003
Knight of Swords...

Moongold  26 Oct 2003
8 Cups?

Moongold  26 Oct 2003
I have to go now but a thrilling contest!

gloria  26 Oct 2003
Moongold………………YES! 8/Cups it is.

The dried outer husk symbolizes the old way of life, of which the seed no longer has use for.

There are various ways in which we can move forward or carried forward even. (as the paragraph suggests))

It is about rebirth as in Death and Judgement etc., but the main message in 8/Cups is the ‘moving on’ element.

Starting afresh ……… somewhere new.

I think “putting down roots, but in a more fertile soil” pretty much sums this card up.

Thanks to all of you - I really enjoyed it.
Gloria.

Moongold  26 Oct 2003
Phew!

gloria  26 Oct 2003
Well done Moongold.

Firemaiden was kind enough to let me take her turn, so I'll leave it to the two of you as to who comes up with new clue.

Just one thing, please, not a difficult one!

G.

firemaiden  26 Oct 2003
what Gloria? you didn't think yours was difficult????
