Literature Clues - new game

Do you know that places only yield up their secrets, their most profound mysteries, to those who are just passing through?

(Salman Rushdie, The Moor's Last Sigh)

Kiama  22 Nov 2003
Hmm, something to do with movement revealing mystery... Something that doesn't sit still for long, yet still manages to tun in to that 'something'.

I've got a few ideas, but I'll go for...

6 of Swords?

Just passing through: transition, a phase.

Kiama

Minderwiz  22 Nov 2003
I'd go for the High Priestess - mysteries revealed to those passing through the curtain between the pillars (B & J)

jmd  22 Nov 2003
Le Fou!

Dark_angel  22 Nov 2003
The Moon?

(I'm not sure why, the quote just made me think of that card)

Diana  23 Nov 2003
None of the above.

gloria  23 Nov 2003
The Sun?

jmd  23 Nov 2003
... and I was so confident ...

How about the Wheel of Fortune ?

Diana  23 Nov 2003
It's more subtle than what you're all suggesting.

jmd  23 Nov 2003
Strength?

I'm stumped a little, and am obviously thinking in the wrong direction...

I'll wait for others to post to re-direct my thoughts or read the quote in a new light...

Diana  23 Nov 2003
jmd: Don't think too much. Go and look at your cards instead.

jmd  23 Nov 2003
I see them... I see them...

Is this a hint that the answer is specific to a particular deck or just that looking at any deck shoud have the desired effect ? :) :)

jmd  23 Nov 2003
one more, and then I'm putting my 'migrane-y' head to sleep.

how about XIII?

Moongold  23 Nov 2003
5 Pentacles?

People in need often see the real side of others.

Minderwiz: I think that any deck should do the trick - unless it's something really weird, like the Sacred Circle or something. But a normal, sensible deck should, I think, give the answer.

Don't forget however, that "places only yield up their secrets, their most profound mysteries, to those who are just passing through?" :D

jmd: sleep well! Don't forget to brush your teeth!

Moongold: five of Pentacles is not it.

gloria  23 Nov 2003
Magician?

Moongold  23 Nov 2003
Le Cavalier de Deniers - stretching it a bit here. Knights travel and thisone has his ear to the ground.

Moongold  23 Nov 2003
Chariot

Kiama  23 Nov 2003
Knight of Swords? He's very quick and fast, and never stays in one place for long...

Kiama

gloria  23 Nov 2003
Last attempt.......The World.

Diana  23 Nov 2003
It's getting nice and warm around here, except for the occasional cool breeze. I think I will remove my sweater, however.

Minderwiz  23 Nov 2003
The Sun?

Moongold  23 Nov 2003
Cavalier de Coupe/

he is likely to bed a young woman at the inn and get all the town secrets that way.

gloria  23 Nov 2003
The woman in the Star has taken off more than her sweater.

gloria  23 Nov 2003
JMD has already offered The Fool,
am going to have to tear myself away from this now, and leave you with The Hermit.

gloria  23 Nov 2003
Judgement.

Queen of Sunbeds???

Or if passing through very quickly - The Chariot?

firemaiden  23 Nov 2003
Well... Gloria already said judgement.

Hmm, how about the moon, in the moon, we have a place to pass through...

Aoife  23 Nov 2003
After studying Firemaiden's thread on MP's Hanged Man, I'll suggest him.

The Hanged Man?

Minderwiz  23 Nov 2003
Well, I've looked and looked at the cards and if jmd has been driven to bed by the difficulty of this :) then what chance have I?

I'll try the Hermit - he is clearly on his way to somewhere, with his staff and lantern, so he could be 'passing through' he is also searching for something - the answer to a mystery?

However I don't see where the warmth and the sweater fit in - unless the lantern is a double candle burner.

Diana  23 Nov 2003
Moongold has won. :)

The Cavalier de Coupes - the Knight of Cups it is.

"Do you know that places only yield up their secrets, their most profound mysteries, to those who are just passing through?"

Of course, Cavaliers always just pass through. Their horses take them on fascinating journeys. The Cavalier de Coupes has journeyed quite a lot - he is rather tired actually - he deserves a little gift of a secret, a profound mystery. He is here to pick up the message, but at the same time, is also here to give us a message - a message held in his Cup - which hints at the Holy Grail. He is one of the keepers of this Holy Cup.

He knows that the past is in the past - and nothing can change it. He also knows that if he stays where is his, his Quest will be in vain - he must go on.

He fixes the Cup intently because he knows that the visions that he sees inside it will soon change - as all things change (please all look at the Cavaliers de Coupes in a Tarot of Marseilles - if you don't have a Tarot of Marseilles, then what on earth are you waiting for? Get yourself one for Christmas because if you don't have one in your collection then you're really missing out on an important part of the Mystery of Tarot. Don't forget, you're just passing through in this life!)

The Cavalier de Coupes will teach you about Love. And he will remind you that "He who binds to himself a joy Does the winged life destroy; But he who kisses the joy as it flies Lives in Eternity's sunrise." (William Blake.)

Over to you, Moongold.

Moongold  23 Nov 2003
Thank you Diana,

I did not have such a noble view of the Cavalier de Coupe but now I've learned something.

Doi I start anew thread now? I will need a few minutes to get a text.

Moongold

Minderwiz  23 Nov 2003
Congratulations Moongold!!!!!!!!!!

and thank you Diana for such a frustratingly, intriguing challenge.

Moongold  23 Nov 2003
Minderwiz, or someone else?

Would you like to take my turn? I have to got to work soon and will not have the time?

Moongold

Minderwiz  23 Nov 2003
I'll do it if nescessary - but if there's anyone else who wants to do it then please please go ahead.

In the mean time I'll see if I've got a book that isn't Stephen King or Isaac Asimov which is available with a meaningful quote :)

Diana  23 Nov 2003
Minderwiz: I nearly chose an Asimov quote! Go ahead! :)

Minderwiz  23 Nov 2003
OK but actually the quote is going to be Terry Pratchett :)

I'll start a new thread in a few minutes
