Perhaps I know best why it is man alone who laughs; he alone suffers so deeply that he had to invent laughter.

Dear all,
Just a quick reminder of the difference between the original What Card Am I? (The game being played in this thread) and the Literature Clues What Card Am I?
The original What Card Am I game is different from the Lit. Clues because it usually involves clues coming from our own minds, us rambling on for a few sentences about the card we are thinking of.
Now, this doesn't have to be a work of art or genius. If you feel inclined by all means write something beautiful and intentionally genius-like, but your clue can be something as simple as:
"I feel bored. Don't know if this is the right way for me. Bored bored bored..." (4 of Cups.)
Anything that comes from your mind, no matter how simple.
Literature Clues also do not have to be beautiful or genius-like, or highbrow. They can be anything as short as the clue Dark_Angel has posted in this thread, to as long and mystical as some we have seen in the past. As long as the clue comes from literature.
I hope this has cleared up any confusion and clarified a few things. If you wish for further information about the games, please see the Index
Blessings,
Kiama

Oops, sorry Kiama! It was just a quotation I remembered which stuck in my mind when I read it years ago, and it always reminds me of this card.
No one's guessed it yet.

That's all very well, but I still think jmd swiped my thinking cap - it disappeared when he was logged-on, and suddenly he logged-off and it had gone. I mean, that's very suspicious.

No one's guessed it yet, so I'll give you a clue.
This person believes they are at rock-bottom, that no one has suffered their pain. What causes such severe pain that it feels like the worst pain in the world?
Oh, and it's a minor.
Edited to add: I didn't think of it in terms of a deck in particular; this phrase just sums up the card in general for me.

I think JMD may have it there, so shall go for Eight/Swords.

JMD's the winner!
A 5 of Cups person believes that they are the saddest person in the world, that their pain is complete, their grief is overwhelming and they realise the tragedies that occur in life (why man must laugh), and they are so absorbed in this sadness that they do not see the two cups remaining, which are full of life and happiness. Or perhaps it is that they have turned their back on these cups, seeing that in the end, life is dark and tragic, and laughter is but a way of forgetting for a while.
I love Nietzsche!
Over to you JMD...

Thanks for the clue, Dark_angel, it helped immensely... especially if one considers the images on RWCS-type decks...
Now I'll have to think of a card, and post a new thread...:):):)
