From "Kushiel's Dart" by Jacqueline Carey
"I will never understand," he said, gaze fixed forward as he strode, "why you do what you do, and call it pleasure."
"With your temper? You should."
That stopped him in his tracks and he stared at me in shock, blue eyes wide. "I do not have a temper! And what does that have to do with it?"
"You have a terrible temper, Joscelin Verreuil. You've just buried it in Cassiline discipline." I rotated my arm, rubbing my shoulder where the joint ached. De Morhban's stock had been made for a taller person. "And not all that well," I added. "I've seen it, Joscelin. I've seen you lose it, against the Skaldi. I've seen you fight like a cornered wolf, when you had no chance of winning. What's it like, that instant when you let it go? When you lash out, with everything in you, knowing you're going to be beaten to the ground? Is it a relief, to surrender to that?"
"Yes." He said it softly, and looked away.
"Well." Something snapped faintly in my shoulder, and the soreness eased. "Imagine that relief compounding, ten times, a hundred times, with every blow, through pain, through agony, to become a pleasure so great and awful that it fixes you like a spear." I shook my arm, finding it better. "Then," I said, "you will understand, a little bit, what it is to serve Kushiel."

Mystic Zyl has already gone for Hanged Man,
so shall offer Nine/Swords.

Nope!
None of you have it so far.
Look at the artwork, RWS.

Cool passage, Matt.
Hmmm, ten of swords? -- surrendering to all those swords stuck in the back (every blow...) and the relief of it?

Still cold.
But firemaiden, I like you're thoughts on the 10 of swords.
Look for the release, not the blows.

Okie Dokie, this doesn't make tons of sense to me, but since we're talking about release, relief, etc, how 'bout the Tower?

Pleasure and pain!!
The Devil?
Editing to add Devil reversed.....release aspect.
I feel sure Firemaiden has it though.

No, I wouldn't use the same card as was the answer last game.
Firemaiden, you're thinking along the right track, but look at the cards and don't go with the traditional meanings necessarily.
Gloria, I thought I already nixed the Devil, but in fairness, I was expecting people to guess it quickly, despite that it is not the answer I'm looking for.

The Lovers?
Love has pleasure and pain; it's bittersweet. The people in the passage are both in love with something (or someone - I don't know the book) and enjoy every moment of it.

I'm not too good with RWS imagery. But how about the Knight of Swords?

The Chariot?
I am not sure which person being described fits the card you are looking for - there is a person that is being served being described and a person in service, and the angry man.
I thought of the Chariot only because the descriptions remind of the need for tremendous willpower, grit, determination.... and somewhat a feeling of going at great speeds not necessarily within your control. This attempt to have control over wild beasts is not always successful, right? That wild thing within sometimes breaks free...
anyway, that's what it made me think of...

Still aint got it.
Molly, it's the release that both experience, but only one (her name's Phedre) freely admits. Such surrender is not really the wild thing breaking free, but a response -though perhaps undeesirable but definitely compelling- to the wild thing of opening the cage door.

Dead Star, you've got the idea right by guessing The Fool, but take the idea and look at the cards, and don't necessarily apply rote meanings.

Congratulations Dead Star!!!!!
You got it!
It was Judgment.
Phedre and Joscelin are responding to a call, however uncomfortable. It's a release to them like being freed from a coffin. Phedre mentions the repeated "blows" (get your mind out od the gutter), and we have the blaring blow of the trumpet. "Kushiel" who she refers to is an angel (albeit a sadistic one), but if I had said that earlier I would have given it away too easily.
