What card am I? (Lit. Clues) Nov 29- Solved

MattDouglas  29 Nov 2003
From "Kushiel's Dart" by Jacqueline Carey

"I will never understand," he said, gaze fixed forward as he strode, "why you do what you do, and call it pleasure."
"With your temper? You should."
That stopped him in his tracks and he stared at me in shock, blue eyes wide. "I do not have a temper! And what does that have to do with it?"
"You have a terrible temper, Joscelin Verreuil. You've just buried it in Cassiline discipline." I rotated my arm, rubbing my shoulder where the joint ached. De Morhban's stock had been made for a taller person. "And not all that well," I added. "I've seen it, Joscelin. I've seen you lose it, against the Skaldi. I've seen you fight like a cornered wolf, when you had no chance of winning. What's it like, that instant when you let it go? When you lash out, with everything in you, knowing you're going to be beaten to the ground? Is it a relief, to surrender to that?"
"Yes." He said it softly, and looked away.
"Well." Something snapped faintly in my shoulder, and the soreness eased. "Imagine that relief compounding, ten times, a hundred times, with every blow, through pain, through agony, to become a pleasure so great and awful that it fixes you like a spear." I shook my arm, finding it better. "Then," I said, "you will understand, a little bit, what it is to serve Kushiel."

Nine of Wands?

Mystic Zyl  29 Nov 2003
Hanged Man, pain and sacrifice makes for enlightenment.

Star Spirit  29 Nov 2003
The Devil?

gloria  30 Nov 2003
Mystic Zyl has already gone for Hanged Man,
so shall offer Nine/Swords.

MattDouglas  30 Nov 2003
Nope!
None of you have it so far.
Look at the artwork, RWS.

jmd  30 Nov 2003
Knight of Wands?

firemaiden  30 Nov 2003
Cool passage, Matt.
Hmmm, ten of swords? -- surrendering to all those swords stuck in the back (every blow...) and the relief of it?

MattDouglas  30 Nov 2003
Still cold.
But firemaiden, I like you're thoughts on the 10 of swords.
Look for the release, not the blows.

gloria  30 Nov 2003
Death?
Climax and surrender of the ego?

MattDouglas  30 Nov 2003
Nope.
again

firemaiden  30 Nov 2003
Okie Dokie, this doesn't make tons of sense to me, but since we're talking about release, relief, etc, how 'bout the Tower?

gloria  30 Nov 2003
Pleasure and pain!!
The Devil?

Editing to add Devil reversed.....release aspect.
I feel sure Firemaiden has it though.

MattDouglas  30 Nov 2003
No, I wouldn't use the same card as was the answer last game.
Firemaiden, you're thinking along the right track, but look at the cards and don't go with the traditional meanings necessarily.
Gloria, I thought I already nixed the Devil, but in fairness, I was expecting people to guess it quickly, despite that it is not the answer I'm looking for.

firemaiden  30 Nov 2003
Have we said the eight of swords yet?

gloria  30 Nov 2003
The Star?

gloria  30 Nov 2003
What about 6/Swords. That's where I'd like to be after all that aggravation!

Mystic Zyl  30 Nov 2003
Four of Swords, rest, recuperation, reflection, hmm the 3 R's

Dark_angel  30 Nov 2003
The Lovers?

Love has pleasure and pain; it's bittersweet. The people in the passage are both in love with something (or someone - I don't know the book) and enjoy every moment of it.

Diana  30 Nov 2003
I'm not too good with RWS imagery. But how about the Knight of Swords?

MattDouglas  30 Nov 2003
Nobody has it yet!
Hint: it's a Major Arcanum.

Mystic Zyl  30 Nov 2003
Strength, to carry on what needs to be done, duty.

Molly  30 Nov 2003
The Chariot?

I am not sure which person being described fits the card you are looking for - there is a person that is being served being described and a person in service, and the angry man.

I thought of the Chariot only because the descriptions remind of the need for tremendous willpower, grit, determination.... and somewhat a feeling of going at great speeds not necessarily within your control. This attempt to have control over wild beasts is not always successful, right? That wild thing within sometimes breaks free...

anyway, that's what it made me think of...

MattDouglas  01 Dec 2003
Still aint got it.

Molly, it's the release that both experience, but only one (her name's Phedre) freely admits. Such surrender is not really the wild thing breaking free, but a response -though perhaps undeesirable but definitely compelling- to the wild thing of opening the cage door.

Star Spirit  01 Dec 2003
The Fool?

MattDouglas  01 Dec 2003
Nope.

Dead Star, you've got the idea right by guessing The Fool, but take the idea and look at the cards, and don't necessarily apply rote meanings.

gloria  01 Dec 2003
The Moon?

gloria  01 Dec 2003
Matt I have to go now, my other guess World?

MattDouglas  01 Dec 2003
Neither.

Star Spirit  01 Dec 2003
Well, my other guess was Judgement. Freedom from sins and guilt.

Dark_angel  01 Dec 2003
Wheel of Fortune? When the beast's released, you just have to go with it?

gloria  01 Dec 2003
The Magician?

Lady Mary  01 Dec 2003
Hierophant?

Dark_angel  01 Dec 2003
The High Priestess?

gloria  01 Dec 2003
The Sun.

Mystic Zyl  01 Dec 2003
Hermit, just because we are running out of cards.

There are only two more cards to guess for Major Arcana.

MattDouglas  01 Dec 2003
Congratulations Dead Star!!!!!
You got it!

It was Judgment.

Phedre and Joscelin are responding to a call, however uncomfortable. It's a release to them like being freed from a coffin. Phedre mentions the repeated "blows" (get your mind out od the gutter), and we have the blaring blow of the trumpet. "Kushiel" who she refers to is an angel (albeit a sadistic one), but if I had said that earlier I would have given it away too easily.

Molly  01 Dec 2003
I can see how that card fits now (that you've described it! *G*), but that was so HARD! Lol!

Star Spirit  01 Dec 2003
How did I know this would happen? Haha...back to me I guess... I thought for sure some of the others guessed it though.
