When Dylan Thomas failed to show as best man for his best friend Vernon Watkin's wedding in 1944, and then didn’t bother to send word of explanation for several weeks, Watkins told his wife that he was finished with him — this time for good. But of course, he wasn’t.
There is a passage in the belated letter of apology that comes close to stating the truth about what lay behind Dylan’s utter unreliability.
"The ordinary moments of walking up village streets, opening doors or letters, speaking good-days to friends or strangers, looking out of windows, making telephone calls, are so inexplicably (to me) dangerous that I am trembling all over before I get out of bed in the mornings to meet them."
What card am I?

Seven of Cups - muddled thinking, daydreams, poor concentration, inability to cope

Eight of Swords?
This man sounds like he suffers from depression. Events and people that would appear perfectly normal to a non-sufferer become swords and chains, and the mere threat of these swords is enough to terrify the sufferer into inaction.

7 of pentacles.
I like you're interpretation, Dark Angel, of him being made depressed by seemingly normal circumstances. I think the 7 of pentacles can reflect that same notion.

Sorry for the delay folks.
The 8 and 9 of Swords would have been a pretty good choice for this quote, and Dark_Angel your interpretation was spot on.
The 7/Cups I did ponder over but it didn’t really relay…..well if I say I could very well give it away.
Sorry Matt and Diana but not 7/Discs or Page/Cups.
It isn’t 8/Cups jewel-ry……D.T probably did turn his back on a ‘structured’ way of life, but there is something else the quote implies.
And sorry JMD but not 7/Swords. You know I feel I understand Dylan Thomas perfectly here. And I’m sure I’m not alone in having experienced these very same feelings at times. But I don’t understand his inclusion of the word ‘dangerous,' so you have DT to blame there JMD! :)
But please....keep trying!

Four of Cups then,
Depression, social isolation and indeed missing social invitations such as the wedding - lack of motivation

It is about fear(s) JMD.....but not The Devil!
How about that Minderwiz! The 4/Cups! (Rider Waite)
It isn't the card, but it is sitting right in front of me now! Along side the card for this quote.
I 'pulled' it as a daily card for yesterday. Not that I took much heed of it....I didn't refuse the 'cup(s)'... which is why I have a 'muzzy' head today!!!! :(

Lack of self-worth with 5/Discs JMD. This passage does imply that, but not the card.
I could see DT being very much a prisoner of The Tower Diana.....but he must, in some way have escaped...only to be 'imprisoned' again!
Yes, this has me thinking, this could perfectly descibe his alcoholism.
Won't be long now I'm sure. :)

Imprisoned within his own reflections...
XVIII the Moon?

THE MOON IT IS!!!!!
Imprisoned within his own reflections....very much so JMD.
The Moon, like the mind can be a dark, mysterious and sometimes frightening place.
The crayfish trying to crawl from the murky depths symbolizes, as Waite puts it, “that which lies deeper than the savage beast.”
The towers which have no doors warn us how innermost fears can imprison us.
We have to tread the yellow winding path, and in doing so, confront our demons.
Sadly, Dylan’s courtship with alcohol denied him the ability to get a foothold on that path.
OVER TO YOU JMD!:)

Well done, jmd!
(There are towers in the Moon card. Does this mean I get second prize?)

I think you should qualify for an extra large bar of Toblerone :)
I guessed the 4 of Cups which was alongside the Moon, so do I qualify for a couple of bottles of wine???

Thanks Gloria...
with Mnderwiz having four Cups, and given the alcoholism in the quote, it would be nice to have a couple of bottles of wine to share...
Diana, given that the Moon has Two Towers - and a Ringed Moon to Lord over it, you'll have to settle for third prize :D
... now for a return of a quote :)
