Literary Quote (Jan 17)- Solved

Thread originally posted on the Aeclectic Tarot Forum on 17 Jan 2004, and now archived in the Forum Library.

MattDouglas  17 Jan 2004
From "The Prophet" by Kahlil Gibran

And the weaver said, Speak to us of Clothes.
And he answered:
Your clothes conceal much of your beauty, yet they hide not the unbeautiful.
And though you seek in Garments the freedom of privacy you may find in them a harness and a chain.
Would that you could meet thesun and the wind with more of your skin and less of your raiment,
For the breath of life is in the sunlight and the hand of life is in the wind.

Some of you say, "It is the north wind who has woven the clothes we wear."
And I say, Ay, it was the north wind,
But shame was his loom, and the softening of sinews was his thread.
And when his work was done he laughed in the forest.
Forget not that modesty is for a shield against the eye of the unclean.
And when the unclean shall be no more, what were modesty but a fouling and fettering of the mind?
And forget not that the earth delights to feel your bare feet and the wind longs to play with your hair.

jmd  17 Jan 2004
Of Clothes?

How about IV the Emperor :D

gloria  17 Jan 2004
I feel this is something to do with being bound to material conditions....so am opting for The Devil.

Mystic Zyl  17 Jan 2004
Fool

Diana  17 Jan 2004
The Star?

Dark_angel  17 Jan 2004
How about the Hermit?

He has opted out of the life attached to materialism and appearance, wearing simple clothes to keep out the north wind as he walks the mountains - the wind did weave his attire. He doesn't cover himself in finery, knowing that it stifles inner beauty.

MattDouglas  17 Jan 2004
Sorry, none of the above.

Though I did like your line of thought, Dark Angel. Hermit is now a runner-up for the quote. But still not the one on the top of my list.

Lorem  18 Jan 2004
My guess is the Tower. Clothing is a false pretense that hides us and binds us in image, never looking to see what is within. Its destruction leaves us naked and free.

-Lorem-

jmd  18 Jan 2004
The Sun... (again :))

MattDouglas  18 Jan 2004
Sorry, Lorem. It's not the Tower either.

MattDouglas  18 Jan 2004
Or the Sun.
jmd, I wouldn't be so cheesy as to use the same card twice in a row.

jmd  18 Jan 2004
oohh, I would have regarded it as beautifully illustrating the state of the characters upon the image, not as cheesy... :)

How about, dropping their 'clothes' in resurrected nakeness,
    XX Judgement ?

Dark Eyes  18 Jan 2004
How about the 4 of pentacles.... ? Holding on to material posessions and in turn concealing the persons beauty and uncovering their less flattering qualities....... ??

Dark eyes........ :)

MattDouglas  18 Jan 2004
Still nope, folks!!!

jmd, while I do feel I COULD illustrate a card's image beautifully by using it twice ina row, I like to give the other players some variety. Besdie, I think some people would not guess the particular answer, thinking I had used that card recently, even if they feel the quote fits the card dead on.

Kissa  18 Jan 2004
... the Moon?

Kissa

jmd  18 Jan 2004
As she sometimes has a her feet what may be a loom, how about
    II the High Priestess/Papess ?

MattDouglas  18 Jan 2004
Neither the Moon nor the High Priestess.

jmd, Sorry I forgot to mention, I am going from the RWCS. But for the the Marseilles, I would agree that the High Priestess could be seen as having a loom at her feet.

Dark Eyes  18 Jan 2004
I am sure it must be the 5 of pentacles....

Not everyone needs the material posessions that makes others happy, clothing can be more of a burden and covers up ones beauty.

There is a sense of advising that nature and the natural state of ones body are complimentary to each other and so there is no need to wish for material goods. One can be happy in ones natural state, therefor wish not for money or fancy clothes, but appreciate what you have got.... your life and nature.

:)

MattDouglas  18 Jan 2004
That's still not it, Dark Eyes,

But your guesses are the closest so far.

jmd  18 Jan 2004
... in that case,
    Seven Cups?
:)

MattDouglas  18 Jan 2004
Interesting choice, but no.

jmd  18 Jan 2004
for the sense of wind in the depiction, and some of the scenic quality, how about the
    Five Swords ?

MattDouglas  18 Jan 2004
Sorry, not it either.

Mystic Zyl  18 Jan 2004
King of Pentacles

Lorem  19 Jan 2004
Hmmmm... I'm not quite sure where this is going... Eight of Cups?

MattDouglas  19 Jan 2004
Still haven't got it, but gettin' closer.

Black dragon  19 Jan 2004
8 of Wands

Black Dragon.

jmd  19 Jan 2004
Nine Cups !:D

MattDouglas  19 Jan 2004
Still no.

Remember how I like to pick cards for quote from my previous games.

jmd  19 Jan 2004
...five Cups ?

As the cloak hides much of the beauty, but the sense of ugliness is on the surface?

MattDouglas  19 Jan 2004
Nope again.

I am not looking at this as a person or a scene being unbeautiful. I am looking at is as someone with beauty all around but for whatever reason not enjoying it.

gloria  19 Jan 2004
Four/Cups?
This guy looks pretty bored and discontent with his surroundings!

Mystic Zyl  19 Jan 2004
Empress

MattDouglas  19 Jan 2004
Y'all still don't have it.

Mystic Zyl, your two guesses have been the closest so far.

Mystic Zyl  19 Jan 2004
Lovers in a garden of Eden but much trial and tribulation to enjoy it.

Diana  19 Jan 2004
8 of Swords? (hope it hasn't been taken already. I didn't check the rest of the answers, as I haven't been here lately and thought that might be cheating a bit.)

(edited because I went to check my RWS deck and realised I'd been confusing two cards.)

MattDouglas  19 Jan 2004
No to both!

Mystic Zyl, you're headed in the right direction.

Still a no go.

Dark Eyes  20 Jan 2004
It has to be the Wheel of fortune....

The wheel spins and weaves, life can change, but the hub of the wheel remains fixed. No matter what material goods one posesses, ones fortune cannot be expressed in monetry or material posessions.

I know I have guessed it Matt, just give me the O.K.
:).

MattDouglas  20 Jan 2004
Sorry Dark Eyes, but that aint it.

Mystic Zyl  20 Jan 2004
Thanks for the encouragement, ....

9 of Pentacles?

MattDouglas  20 Jan 2004
Nope, but you are still very much in the ballpark.

mercenary30  20 Jan 2004
The world?

When Eden is again attained?

Dark Eyes  20 Jan 2004
perhaps I had had a few wines last night when I posted the Wheel of Fortune, Not sure it made a lot of sense when i read it this morning. :|
Today I'm thinking a little clearer.... I go with 2 pentacles. A financial juggling act where there is possible future movement forward but for the moment the material aspect isn't important ?

Mystic Zyl  20 Jan 2004
8 of pentacles

MattDouglas  20 Jan 2004
Still aint got it!

Dark Eyes  20 Jan 2004
I've got it !!

The Hanged man... ?

A need to look within for fulfillment rather than being impressed by external baggage such as clothing... ?

:).

MattDouglas  21 Jan 2004

I will Have to think some more then. Hmmmm........

gloria  21 Jan 2004
How about Queen of Discs?

mercenary30  21 Jan 2004
Could it be Temperance?

(a stretch guess.....)

Mystic Zyl  21 Jan 2004
6 of wands

MattDouglas  21 Jan 2004
Congratulations Gloroa!!!!

Yes, it is the Queen of Discs, or rather Queen of Pentacles since I was using RWCS.

The quote is often refering to the beauty of nature, which we see in this card with all the lush scenery (as opposed to, say, the Hermit).

However, the queen is dressed so that all but her face and hands are covered. She seemed rather melancholy at that (as opposed to The Sun where the child is enjoying the bounty of life, or the king who though sitting seems pretty happy).

The Queen of Pentacles has the abundance her around her, yet doesn't seem to be enjoying it. Since the quote is of a prophet giving out wisdom he has acquired, I saw passage as an encouragement to the queen to enjoy the bounties of her kingdom.

Over to you, Gloria!!!!!!

jmd  21 Jan 2004
Glory to gloria!!!

Well done :)

Dark Eyes  21 Jan 2004
Good for you Gloria,

That was going to be my next guess.....................

Well, maybe not.............

Awaiting a new puzzle

D.E. ;)

gloria  22 Jan 2004
Matt, JMD, and Dark Eyes....thanks! :)
I have one on the back burner!.....shall be back soon.
G.
