Apolgies for being flippant here but couldn't resist it.
On a more serious note - how about the Magician? The Master of Illusion.

firemaiden: What a strange quote.......
The Fool?

Yes, Henri Michaux writes very strange things :D
I think the 7 of cups was a great guess, pretty close actually, there are certainly illusions here, and the master of illusion was a wonderful guess for the same reason. The King of cups too, hee hee, wonderful interpretations. I like the idea of the fool for this too... however, as a friend of mine is fond of saying, none of these are the card I had in mind, keep guessing.
:D :D :D

Death!!
If he doesn't like something, he just gets rid of it.

You know, the nine of cups is a lovely idea, because certainly the poet is getting his wishes fulfilled. :) As for Death, there is some of that, lovely thought, isn't it, about just taking someones ears off, and nose, if you don't like them....
But no... still not the card I had in mind... but close!

How about The Star?
Bathing in a river naked is definitely living the simple life. Also, theres lots of hope here; hope for what's left after all else has been removed, which in this case is usually body parts.

Wonderful ideas! I love the idea of the star for this, hmmm, yes. Simplicity, I hadn't thought of it that way.
As for the seven of swords, Jewel-ry, you're on to something...
Still not the card yet, keep guessing!!

Positive thinking wins through?

Hahaha,
Mystic Zil, that's a fun interpretation of the page of swords, and would make sense here too.
Jewel-ry, I like your take on the five of swords, (I'll remember that for the next sado-maso quote from Baudelaire...)
Sorry Dark eyes, still not the magician -- although I think its a wonderful interpretation for this quote,
Gloria you are on to my vein of thinking with the seven of wands, still not the card though :D

It does show a guy wth a chisel, and he is working. But he seems distracted by something else and is looking off. A pretty lady perhaps?

bing-bing-bing-bing-bing-bing-bing-bing!!!
aaaaaaaaaaaand the winner is GLORIA!!!! with the chariot!!
I have often though of the chariot as the vehicle of internal voyages, or travels through the imaginary in the time-space warp, using the steering mechanism of the will/mind/imagination...
(Michaux was a meek little man, he certainly never cut anyone's ears off, and I seriously doubt he'd have bed too many women...)
