This is from 'American Psycho' by Bret Easton Ellis.
Today I'm meeting Bethany for lunch at Vanities, the new Evan Kiley bistro in Tribeca, and though I worked out for nearly two hours this morning and even lifted weights in my office before noon, I'm still extremely nervous. The cause is hard to locate but I've narrowed it down to one of two reasons.
It's either that I'm afraid of rejection (though I can't understand why : SHE called ME, she wants to see ME, she wants to have lunch with ME....), or, on the other hand, it could have something to do with this new Italian mousse I'm wearing...
If people get stuck, I'll post more of it.
Happy guessing!

All good guesses, but not the card I decided on.
Although the Devil does describe Bates pretty well, or at least how he'd like to be.

Nope, none of the above.
I think Bates is obsessed with how people view him, not because he cares about them, but because he wants power and respect from them, and feels that being seen as the ultimate man is the best way to achieve that.
He spends all this time getting ready for a woman, one who wants to see him even though he's treated her appallingly in the past (Bates dated her at college and abandoned her)...
...he's toned and tanned, all dressed up, all to create a stunning impression...

Lady Mary has it!
I chose the Knight of Cups because of some of the negative aspects of the card, which I thought were shown in Bates.
He is going to great lengths to come across as a romantic, caring and attractive man (when actually he is psychotic), and women can't help but feel drawn to him, even when they know he is bad for them.
You have the floor, Lady Mary.
