Literary Quotation - Solved

Thread originally posted on the Aeclectic Tarot Forum on 06 Feb 2004, and now archived in the Forum Library.

Dark_angel  06 Feb 2004
This is an old quotation from 'The Fisher King' (I think):

"Fear death by drowning."

Happy guessing!

Diana  06 Feb 2004
Ace of Cups?

I mean, if you confuse the Ace of Cups with a swimming pool, you may find it hard to climb out and that's pretty scary.

Lady Mary  06 Feb 2004
I'd say the Queen of Cups; how easy it's to get drown into a see of feelings.

gloria  06 Feb 2004
The Hanged Man? (This card is also known as The Drowned Man)

ncefafn  06 Feb 2004
I think Gloria's got it.

Kim

WolfyJames  06 Feb 2004
Nine Of swords?

The Moon?

MattDouglas  06 Feb 2004
King of Cups!

He sometimes seems a little nervous surrounded by that ocean.

Jewel-ry  06 Feb 2004
I reckon its the Hanged Man too but since thats taken ...

3 Swords

J :)

Lorem  06 Feb 2004
I was going to guess 9 of swords, but since that's taken...

7 of cups?

jmd  07 Feb 2004
Since the couple of cards I would first have also suggested have been already mentioned, how about:

The Papess/High Priestess ?

Emily  07 Feb 2004
The Star - she could always fall in face first lol :D

Dark_angel  07 Feb 2004
Not yet, I'm afraid.

The Hanged Man was the card initially meant (I think) by the author, but I ended up choosing something different.

Diana's closest so far, I think.

Lady Mary  07 Feb 2004
The Moon?
There's danger and a warning.
If you fail to find the right path during the night, you might drown.

Scorpion  07 Feb 2004
I suspect you've got it, Lady Mary - that would have been my choice but you've beaten me to it!

Diana  07 Feb 2004
10 of Cups?

You can most definitely drown in those...

10 of Cups can be a card of such illusion. Can be scary for those who sees a loved one falling into them.

Dark_angel  07 Feb 2004
Nope, not yet...

firemaiden  07 Feb 2004
Ten of swords?

I have the crystal deck where swords are associated with water. I've just drawn this card in a reading, am meditating on it and thinking how the 'untergang' - "going under" aspect of the card is clearer here when the swords are water. In fact this card reminds me of someone who has just fallen through the ice.

Jewel-ry  07 Feb 2004
The Chariot?

I say this only because I am sat here looking at the Haindl Chariot (for jmd's 78 card study) and the vehicle he controls is a boat with wheels and there is water and waves. The chariot is a little about facing or controlling your fears and has something to do with Cancer (the crab with the hard shell)

Doh! I dont know ... it is getting late ... thats my excuse and I'm sticking to it :D

J :)

Lady Mary  07 Feb 2004
Maybe the 2 of Cups if these two drink too much ...

Dark_angel  07 Feb 2004
Not quite, but Lady Mary is getting close....

Lady Mary  07 Feb 2004
OK, 3 of Cups; are these ladies maybe drinking too much? :)

WolfyJames  07 Feb 2004
Five of Cups?

Dark_angel  07 Feb 2004
All good answers, but not the one I was thinking of.

I'll still say Diana and Lady Mary's answers are closest.

Dark Eyes  07 Feb 2004
I think it may be [/color]. Time to take things all in moderation or one may overdo something and drown in it. ! ..?
;)

jmd  07 Feb 2004
Suggested cards thus far:
    High Priestess
    Chariot
    Hanged Man
    Temperance
    Star
    Moon (twice)

    Ace Cups
    2 Cups
    3 Cups
    5 Cups
    7 Cups
    10 Cups
    Queen Cups
    King Cups

    3 Swords
    9 Swords
    10 Swords

So.... how about the Page of Cups... maybe he's just getting ready to jump in and swim :)

Dark_angel  07 Feb 2004
Nope. You are on the right track with the Cups, but there's still some way to go.

What can you drown in?

jmd  07 Feb 2004
Ok...

how about the eight of Cups?

Diana  08 Feb 2004
Fish can't drown. (RW Page of Cups)

But I will say Page of Cups because people are not fish (or so I am told).

jmd  08 Feb 2004
sorry Diana... look at my last line on my post three posts up :)

Diana  08 Feb 2004
Sorry jmd. Thanks for pointing that out. I only saw your list and thought "goody, the Page of Cups is still free.....". :)

Okay, seeing as jmd got there before me, I will have to say the Knight of Cups. Horses are not the best swimmers, are they?

Lady Mary  08 Feb 2004
6 of Cups - danger of getting drown in the past?

gloria  08 Feb 2004
How about 4/Cups?
Bored to death???

Dark_angel  08 Feb 2004
Ok, time for another clue.

It's not in the suit of Cups.

Emily  08 Feb 2004
What about 6 Swords - they are on the water, the boat could tip. The figures are sitting close together, could be afraid of the water.

ncefafn  08 Feb 2004
Three of Wands

Kim

Lady Mary  08 Feb 2004
How about the Fool? Maybe this is the warning he takes with him on the journey.

gloria  08 Feb 2004
2/Swords?

Dark_angel  08 Feb 2004
Nope, not yet.

I'm starting to think I may have got this one wrong in my own mind, so please someone guess it soon.

It's to do with the nature of the Cups, but not in the suit.

Lady Mary  08 Feb 2004
How about the Lovers? Love can be dangerous.

firemaiden  08 Feb 2004
Have we had the Devil yet?

Dark_angel  08 Feb 2004
Lady Mary has it!

Love can indeed be dangerous - people can become so involved in each other that they forget who they are as individuals; the loss of individuality is like a death.
