Literature Clue [12th Feb.] - Solved

jmd  12 Feb 2004
From Henri Bergson's The Two Sources of Morality and Religion, (Doubleday Anchor Books, 1954) p100:
If a word of a great mystic, or some one of his imitators, finds an echo in one or another of us, may it not be that there is a mystic dormant within us, merely waiting for an occasion to awake?

Kiama  12 Feb 2004
Hmmm... The Hanged Man? What with all the mentions of mysticism and things being dormant, this was the first care that came to my mind.

(Which probably means that you've thought of something completely different! }))

Kiama

Diana  12 Feb 2004
Judgement.

firemaiden  12 Feb 2004
Queen of Cups

(I'm thinking of the sybil at the bottom of the well, or Erda, in shrouds under the earth... waiting to be called and awakened from age-long slumber...)

Diana has Judgement....so shall go for The Hermit.

Mystic Zyl  12 Feb 2004
Death as in a transformation coming forth, bloomimg into something else.

Dark_angel  12 Feb 2004
High Priestess / Papesse ?

MattDouglas  12 Feb 2004
I would have guessed Judgment first too, but since Diana beat me to it, I'll say....

4 of swords.

witchywomyn  12 Feb 2004
the Magician possibly?

jmd  12 Feb 2004
Both Judgement and the Hanged Man are certainly reflected in that quote in the sense that the awakening to the spiritual, and its consequent initiatic aspect, can be seen in those cards.

The Four Swords also brings a similar sense of both awakening and re-birth. As does Death.

With the Hermit, here we have the person whose words may have first been taken. The Papesse/High Priestess may also represent the holder of that important book and initiatory aspect. In addition, there is an aspect to each of these cards which also echoes the silence into which one enters as Mystic.

With the Queen of Cups, especially as described by Firemaiden, I can also see how it is reflected in the quote. The Magician may also certainly take within that Mystic Word and begin his great Journey...

...but none of these was the card I settled on.

Dark_angel  12 Feb 2004
The Fool?

Lady Mary  12 Feb 2004
Ace of Swords?

MattDouglas  12 Feb 2004
Dark Angel, after what jmd said in his last post, you beat me to what I was going to next guest.

So instead I'll guess...

the Chariot,

if what's being talked about is the departure, rather than just the desire to depart.

WolfyJames  12 Feb 2004
The Hierophant? Star? Tower?

firemaiden  12 Feb 2004
How 'bout the Knight of Cups? He's a mystic in disguise...

ncefafn  12 Feb 2004
The Moon.

The Ace of Cups from my Crystal Tarot (Tarocchi di Vetro) shows an eagle sleeping in the bottom of the cup... in chat mac22 said the eagle stands for psychic power... if the Ace contains the potential for the whole suit, maybe the sleeping eagle in the cup stands for sleeping psychic power, waiting to be awakened.

gloria  13 Feb 2004
How about The Sun?
Being struck by a burst of light?

jmd  13 Feb 2004
WolfyJames has it :)

Well, which one, the Heirophant, the Star or the Tower?

Kim, who's going to have to remember this technique

jmd  13 Feb 2004
yesss... which one indeed???

:):):)

WolfyJames  13 Feb 2004
You're being cruel, you know that? ;) Please, tell us!

Wait? Are you saying I got it? Wow! Never happened before! Does it mean I have to come up with a quote too?

jmd  13 Feb 2004
...as soon as you tell us which one :)

jmd  13 Feb 2004
Was that beeing too cruel???

I suppose I can't delay too long my sense for why the Pope/Hierophant.

The tone of the quote was one of spiritual teaching, of the word being communicated, and in turn having the spark within quickened. In that sense, the Pope (as office, oft certainly not reality - especially if one considers history), as he who points to the spiritual realm, will also reflect, or echo, the words which may find the occasion to awaken the mystic in us.
