I doubt he's very competent at reading the cards...
I didn't catch all the dialogue, but he turned down working on a car because he drew the 8 of Wands and the Fool? I woulda gone for it...the 8 of Wands would suggest to me the car works just fine, that it runs totally smoothly, and the Fool is a very affirming card to me...

The guy kinda reminded me of Wovlerine from X Men....

This was great fun! And he wanted to know what color the car was, then said it as he was shuffling (can you imagine the state of those cards!)
He clearly had a convention defined for wands. "The higher the card, the worse the trouble" So under his definition, only a Fool would take on an 8-wands car.
Maybe this mechanic never works on any problem higher than a 6 :-) We know 6-swords will take you places!
