“Chico,” Bock said, “this ****er here told me he wanted to be a crew chief. If you look at his hands, you can see he’s never worked a day in his life. He was willing to ride in back with the niggers instead of joinin’ me in the cab. Find out who he is and what he wants.”

Charles Willeford: “The way we die now” (A Hoke Moseley detective thriller)

A bit of wild guess here Lady Mary, but the 7 of Swords keeps coming into my mind for this one.

Wisdom of acting cautiously - finding out who he is and what he wants.

Knight of Cups ?

lionette  26 Mar 2004
Hi Lady Mary,

maybe the Hierophant??

contrascarpe  26 Mar 2004
Chariot?

Lady Mary  27 Mar 2004
Sorry, none of these cards!

jmd  27 Mar 2004
The devil ?

ncefafn  27 Mar 2004
The feeling I got from the character described is that he's a man of the people, a man of humility, who's only concern is with his work and none of the extraneous details of race, rank, or even criminality.

Soooo . . . my first guess along that line is 8 of Pentacles, the card of the dedicated and single-minded apprentice.

Maybe it's The Magician 'working' sleight of hand!!

Agathe  27 Mar 2004
9 of cups?

lionette  27 Mar 2004
Justice?

He's willing to put himself in a position of compromise as crew chief and act as go-between, and since he's not a laborer himself, I see him as an activist for civil rights.

Lady Mary  27 Mar 2004
Hi all,
Really EXCELLENT answers and explanations!!! But the card that came to my mind first, is a different one.

Kim,
Absolut super description of Sergeant Hoke Moseley!!! Stunning!!!

gloria  27 Mar 2004
How about King of Swords?

ncefafn  27 Mar 2004
Thanks, Lady Mary. I suspect we have some of the same tastes in books. I think it was you who chose a quote from "The Big Sleep," wasn't it?

Okay, so my next guess is the Page of Swords, for the sense of the spy, the ringer, the wild card in the bunch, who plays his own cards close to his chest.

Kim

Lady Mary  27 Mar 2004
Hi Kim,

Yes that's what I also think whenever I read something from you. Guess we're rather similar!

But sorry, it's neither King nor Page of Swords.

gloria  28 Mar 2004
A man of compassion....King of Cups?

ncefafn  28 Mar 2004
How about The Hermit?

Lady Mary  28 Mar 2004
Sorry, none of these cards. Keep guessing!

lionette  28 Mar 2004
Hermit
King Cups
King & Page Swords
Justice
9Cups
Magician
8Pentacles
Devil
Chariot
Hierophant
Knight Cups
7Swords

and I'd like to add : Page of Cups ?

jmd  28 Mar 2004
King of Wands?

Lady Mary  29 Mar 2004
No, neither Page of Cups nor King of Wands.
I had no court card in mind.

jmd  29 Mar 2004
...mmm.... how about the EMperor?

gloria  29 Mar 2004
Surely only a Fool would throw himself in at the deep end, if you know what I mean?
I know this was Wolfy's card for a clue, but I don't think there's a rule that says it can't be used twice in a row.
G.

Lady Mary  29 Mar 2004
Keep guessing! :D

ncefafn  29 Mar 2004
9 of Wands, not for Hoke Mosely, but for the speaker's feeling of suspicion and defensiveness.

Kim

gloria  29 Mar 2004
This guy has courage and enthusiasm......he's starting from scratch with bags of self-confidence and determination....so how about the Ace/Wands?

Lady Mary  29 Mar 2004
None of these cards!

Think about this strange situation Hoke Moseley is in. He's a senior cop but nevertheless he gets the order to apply as a crew chief somewhere in Southern Miami. Only reading this made me sweat. Everything is taken away from him. He has no gun, no badge, no money, no second pair of socks, and also his false teeth have to remain in his drawer at the police station... :D :D :D

ncefafn  29 Mar 2004
The Hanged Man?

Lady Mary  29 Mar 2004
Rather close, Kim, but not The Hanged Man.
Poor Hoke is in great danger!

gloria  29 Mar 2004
The skeleton in the Death card isn't wearing much either!!

ncefafn  29 Mar 2004
One more try and then I'm giving up. For the deception of going undercover, the dangers of unfamiliar territory, I'll guess the Moon.

Kim

Lady Mary  29 Mar 2004
Hi Kim,
You got it! It was the Moon I had in mind when I read this passage. Danger, delusion, fear, a very unclear situation. Hoke was faced with all of it, but he finally found his way.
So over to you, Kim! I'm looking forward to your next quotation!

ncefafn  29 Mar 2004
Phew, I thought I was going to have to take a brain laxative! I'll be back in a few with a thrilling quote.

Kim
