Against the perfect cover of vine and bramble, a little grey brush rabbit sat quietly in the sun, drying his breast fur, wetted by the grass dew of his early feeding.
The rabbit’s nose crinkled and his ears slewed around now and then, investigating small sounds that might possibly be charged with danger to a brush rabbit.
There had been a rhythmic vibration in the ground audible through the paws, so that ears swung and nose wrinkled, but that had stopped.
Then there had been movement of willow branches yards away and down-wind, so that no odour of fear came to the rabbit.
For the last two minutes there had been sounds of interest but not of danger – a snap and then a whistle like that of the wings of a wild dove.
The rabbit stretched out one hind leg lazily in the warm sun.
There was a snap and a whistle and a grunting thud on fur. The rabbit sat perfectly still and his eyes grew large.
A bamboo arrow was through his chest, and its iron tip deep in the ground on the other side.
The rabbit slumped over on his side and his feet ran and scampered in the air for a moment before he was still.
From John Steinbeck's East of Eden
Well....what card am I? :)

Wow.
Powerful quote.....
I feel false security...lack of appropriate action;
surprise and death.
but what card to choose......
How about the Six of Swords.....

Wow, that guy can write.
It's been years since I read East of Eden. I think I need to revisit it.
Now for my first guess -- for the imagery, Eight of Wands.

i think it is Death
i think that the quote shows someting that cannot be predict and is unchangeable.

I'm leaning towards ...The Tower....
I feel too that the rabbit had a false sense of security, it was as if the rug was pulled out from under him. He had no option, his time was up.
By the way, I could have almost cried when i read this quote, what a strong emotional connection the writer makes with the reader... and in such a short space... ! :( Poor little rabbit

What a great quote! Dark Eyes already posted my guess...The Tower...the flash of lightening, the falling to "death" before rebirth...
Since that guess is taken...Ten of Swords?

I'm glad you like the quote.....East of Eden is my fave book of all time.
But to get down to the nitty gritty.......you still haven't chosen the card I have in mind.
You're on the right track with what you are saying........but!

I will try the 3 of Swords - something to do with the arrow through the chest (heart) and the pain and sorrow.

I think CreativeFire's got it, but just in case . . . how about the Seven of Swords, as it's a sneak attack.

I am not so sure Kim, as the 7 of Swords was the other one that I was tossing up and had to decide on only one! LOL We will just have to wait and see. :D

YOU KIM!!!
Yes it is Seven of Swords. Triumph through cunning.
“Then there had been movement of willow branches yards away and down-wind, so that no odour of fear came to the rabbit.”
These lads used stealth and cunning in hunting and killing their prey.
A carefully prepared plan......put into action with the utmost skill.
Once again over to you Kim. :)
